Gaddafi’s press trip backfires

Libyan government officials this morning took the international press to a town 30km west of Tripoli to show that Muammar Gaddafi was in control, but found that the town had fallen to the anti-government protesters.

Sky TV’s Lisa Holland, who was among the journalists, said it was a surreal experience.

She said people were celebrating in the town square of El Zawiyah and some said Col Gaddafi was ‘finished’.

Their government guide simply told them that he was ‘with the people’.

    It looks like they did.

  2. Edward Caruana Galizia says:

How much longer is the man going to carry on with this charade?

  3. TROY says:

When I heard Lisa Holland saying that Zawiyah had fallen, I just couldn’t believe that the anti-Gaddafi protesters were so close to Tripoli. The Colonel’s noose is getting tighter and tighter.

Is there a Brutus in Gaddafi’s inner circle?

I hope those journalists are not in danger. With Gaddafi, you never know.

  6. Paul Bonnici says:

Of course he would say he was ‘with the people’. What else? Getting lynched by the anti-Gaddafi mob.

There is a Chinese warship heading to the Mediterranean with the excuse that they want to evacuate (spying) Chinese citizens. Let’s not forget Tibet. I hope the Maltese government won’t stoop so low and accommodate them, as they are as bad as Gaddafi.

I hope this Chinese warship won’t be allowed into Malta. China is not a democratic country therefore their warships should not be welcome in Malta.

    • H.P. Baxxter says:

Er, first we give them diplomatic recognition and allow them to have their embassy, and then we refuse their warships? This sort of thing must be thought through before crises happen, not after.

What has Labour got to do with all of this?

[Daphne – Nothing, that’s why the press trip went haywire, because Kurt Farrugia wasn’t there to make sure it didn’t. Had he been there, Nexos would have set up a stage with the appropriate lighting and reporters would have been taken to a Potemkin village.]

    • willywonka says:

Actually, this did in fact, actually happen.

    • ciccio2011 says:

Actually, were there any Maltese journalists on that trip? The Libyan “ambassador” had promised some free travel to the Maltese press.

[Daphne – Cancelled. Obviously – because how were they going to get there and back?]

  8. ciccio2011 says:

The current events in Libya really render irrelevant Labour’s history of foreign policy.

It is worth remembering that Labour’s friends were Tito, Caucescu and Gaddafi.

    Mela gejjin bil-Golden Years…

[Daphne – And don’t forget opposition to EU membership to keep Gaddafi happy.]
