A Dionysian priest, indeed – kienx il-Bacchanalia ma' Karl u Jeffrey ukoll?

Not a Dionysian priest

My attention has been drawn to this perfect gem on – where else? – Labour website Maltastar.

In an interview with One news Father Mintoff, a Dionysian priest who works with immigrants, explained the situation from a different point of view.

———

They are referring, of course, to Dom Mintoff’s brother, Fr Dionysius Mintoff.

But ignorance is rampant among the new generation of leading Labour lights who run that sorry news site, so they are thoroughly unaware that Dionysius is:

1. a first name,

2. the former Great Leader’s also-famous brother’s first name, and

3. that there were indeed Dionysian priests, but they belonged to an ancient Greek/Roman religious cult that involved….well, never mind.

Dritt ghal go l-iskip.

Life is strange. Fr. Dionysius (who I believe is a franciscan friar) used to have a radio show entitled “Infittxu dak li jghaqqadna” – a very positive thought, I think.
Meanwhile, as Prime Minister, his brother Dom Mintoff did whatever possible to divide and rule.

  4. el bandido guapo says:

Now that you have pointed out that “Fr Dionysius” refers to the fellow’s name, next time they they will not make the same mistake with “President Emeritus…”

  5. Tony Aquilina says:

Lindsey Gambin, the journaist who wrote this piece in Maltastar, refers to Fr Mintoff as a Dionysian priest.

This must be a new order of priests set up by the PL. How a journalist in the PL stable does not know Fr Mintoff’s name is Dionysius is beyond comprehension, but then the continuous gaffes made by the PL are the order of the day.

The Dionysian order is a figment of her imagination.

I’m guessing they are using one of those free translators you can find on the internet, without bothering to check if the translation makes any sense. Looks like Evarist has his work cut out for him.

A Dionysian priest, now that’s something we could all encourage. I bet the sacramental wine runs out fast in his diocese.

  9. Joe Micallef says:

After all Dionysus is the god of wine, ecstasy, and intoxication.

I cannot believe that the biggest political party on the island is unable to muster six people with a minimum of half a dozen neurons between them to run its website.

I’m not surprised that Lindsey Gambin delves into antiquity.

Remember when her former head of news had managed to come up with a story on “the auditor’s general”?

Are these people under the illusion that we’re listening?

I’m so tired of their gibberish, it’s not even remotely funny anymore.

Such errors provide valuable insight into the extent of squalor they’ve created for themselves, the abuse of syllogism the only constant factor.

I shudder to think what their impression of us is.

Matching these clues to their aspirations, I’m left uncomfortably wary of the possible direction Malta may be heading.

Thanks to this blog Lyndsey Gambin has now learnt a new word and corrected her report on Maltastar. To think she’s a university graduate or at least spent time as a student there.

  15. Oh, you should hear Angelik’s gems, direct from the Virgin Mary, about priests:

The Virgin Mary in a message to her stooge Angelik: “They (paedophile priests, I presume) are my children and you have to put them first among others. Respect them. Love them. And serve them, my children.” The alleged message also calls on faithful to keep priests safe in the same way “farmers kept bread and water in a cradle beneath their carts… that’s how our priests should be treated. Even if perhaps one of them errs, do not vilify them or break them.”

She must be advocating for the re-institution of Dionysan priests.

  16. John S says:

This must be the most hilarious of the recent gaffes committed by Labour media. Thank you for pointing it out. My wife and I have been in fits of laughter for ages.

Straight into the skip they go.

It really is depressing to think that there is a real chance these clowns will be in power next year.

  19. John Schembri says:

Fr. Dionysius’s first name is actually Paul. When he became a Franciscan friar he chose the name of Dionysius. He is the youngest of the Mintoff siblings and lives in Zurrieq, not in a convent, and he still has that fire in the belly.

He is good preacher, well informed and an avid reader.

    I like his Sunday sermons.

  21. psaila says:

Oh they meant to say Diocesan priest. Tal-Lejber vera ghal gol-hajt.

    • Hot Mama says:

He is not a diocesan priest either.

      • dudu says:

My take on this is that Lyndsay Gambin probably thought that ‘Dionisju’ in ‘Patri Dionisju Mintoff’ refers to his order in the same way that the adjective ‘Frangiskan’ in ‘Patri Frangiskan’ would.

    • La Redoute says:

No, she didn’t mean to say Diocesan priest. She translated ‘patri Dijonisju’, reading the noun as an adjective.

      • ciccio2011 says:

@Psaila. No, they did not mean Diocesan priest.

They did precisely what La Redoute suggested.

So basically, if his name had instead been Patri Carmelo Mintoff, they would have said Fr. Mintoff, a Carmelite priest.

It’s the same mistake as presenting Prime Minister Dominic Mintoff as Mr. Mintoff, a Dominican Prime Minister.

      • johnUSA says:

You got it all wrong. She did not translate anything. That article was not written by her but by some sorry ass at Maltastar.

Whoever wrote that article posted a clip from One News and said that she was reporting.

They were referring to the video clip from Youtube, not to the entire article as they never use a by-line.

In fact I believe that they have just posted a note to specify that she did not write that article.

When are we going to forget completely Mintoff’s reign? It was bad -very bad- while it lasted.

Why bring these unpleasant times to mind? Let’s forget him completely – it would be an act of charity.

Good one by this PL ‘journalist’. Please keep it going as it balances the summer heat and the long hot days…..

  29. red nose says:

Not connected at all – however, I feel that the report in today’s The Times about a group who said they want to leave the Catholic Church – all well and good – no one is stopping these individuals from taking such action – but I think religion is a very peronal thing and I cannot see the grouping in such things.

Perhaps they intend creating some sort of society? I cannot even understand the bit which says they are seeking a correction in their baptismal records. They WERE baptised once and therefore that record should stand.

    • Catsrbest says:

First it was one crackpot – Manu Maltes.

Now they are grouping up: 41 – and if I am not mistaken there is a lawyer amongst them. I bet my last euro he will also be on the MLP’s list of candidates come next election. So ‘liberal’ and ‘progressive’.

I think the effect of the UV rays is taking its toll this summer.

  30. Edward Clemmer says:

I’m surprised that they could even spell “Dionysian,” since “diocesan” can be tricky enough to spell; nor would “Diocesan” (incorrect) be capitalized “D,” because it’s not a religious order, like say, Dominicans or Franciscans, which are named after their founders.

I don’t think “Dionysian” priests were founded by St. Dionysius. But, hey! Who doubts One News?

  31. ciccio2011 says:

Meanwhile, JPO was quoting from Diogenes of Sinope.

Hahaha I’ve heard of ramming and raiding, but not with a boat!

I thought (still do, actually) that the timesofmalta.com content “producers” (what’s the correct term for this?) are somewhat amateurish, but hey, these Maltastar ones are in a different category altogether.

  33. red nose says:

But why oh why do you expect any better from Maltastar?
