UPDATED: Seeing a lost cause, Luciano has moved on already

Published: May 22, 2012 at 10:01am

Last night he was at the parliamentary foreign affairs committee hearing, supposedly grilling the prime minister but instead Facebooking his friends to complain about how bored he was.

This morning, instead of telling us about yesterday night, he’s moved on already and is busy complaining about his annual petlor bill of 2,500 euros.

He has a big car (because he has two children – are they very fat?) and by his own admission does 10,000 miles every seven months. So exactly what does he expect?

Incidentally, I thought we were starving.

UPDATED

Luciano is doing Facebook battle with all those who have posted criticism on his wall, telling him to get a smaller car, use school transport, and so on.

Luciano Busuttil
David that is why I created that undergound car park. I do not have a Maserati biturbo or a Bentley or a Jag or a limo, but I need a car for leg space.

Good luck to you if you can fit in a Vitz. Catherine, I leave Mxlokk to 645am to arrive 8am at Kappara, then Gzira, then Valletta, then meetings most of them outside

Vallettta, then back to Gzira, Kappara, MArsaxlokk, then Hamrun, then Valletta or wherever I have to be around Malta and even Gozo! So please spare me!

Tahsbu xi ggant, God bless, mil-mod li jitkellem. The man is shorter than I am, and I’m 5’7″. He’s wide, true, and square-shaped, so he looks tall, but he’s isn’t. He can’t possibly have legs that are longer than mine, given that he is shorter, and I buzzed around merrily in my son’s old Polo until it was sequestered by my other son who, at 6’2″, is definitely a lot taller and longer-legged than Luciano, but is comfortable in it too.

It’s just that he comes from the sort of background where he wouldn’t be seen dead in a small car because people might think that he can’t afford a large one, jew ghax ma lahaqx allavolja sarilha avukat il-mama.

U t-tfal jibghathom ic-Chiswick, how sweet, mal-puliti go skola indipendenti, ghax missierhom issa sar mittelkless u avukat b’karozza kbira (u mohhu ghadu zghir). Jew jaqaw hemm xi skola ohra l-Kappara?

Maaa, these people. They make me sick.

Does he drive round in circles?

[Daphne – No. He takes the children to school and collects them, because they’re too good and precious for school transport with the children of the racanc. Fortunately for him, he’s self-employed and on a parliamentary salary, so he can do this and then spend a few hours at home waiting with them until his wife gets home from work. The rest of us common mortals had to use babysitters. And school transport.]

  2. SC says:

Did Luciano reply to the sensible comment from David Farrugia? This drives me crazy people driving huge cars or sat with air-con on all day complaining about the price of fuel/ energy they consume.

[Daphne – You can check out his wall. It’s open.]

  3. Lilla says:

How much time does this man spend on Facebook?

His time would be better spent learning to write properly in English. Check out his bio:

    Hon. Luciano Busuttil
I am 35 yrs old, married to Dorothy, have 2 kids Gabriel 3 yr old and Kayleigh 4 months. I am a lawyer since 1999 practicing in Maltese Courts of Law and Tribunals. My political career started in 1997 first as a journalist and a TV anchor man for One News till 2000 when I also presented different news related programmes. During this period I was an active member of the National Executive of the Forum Zghazagh Laburisti (Labour Youth Forum). In 2001 I got elected as Mayor for Hamrun. I got re-elected two more times in 2004 and in 2007. Did not make it to Parliament in 2003 but succeeded in being elected in 2008. I was appointed as spokesman for EU affairs and foreign affairs and MEUSAC for PL. Personal interests in movies and reading and music and astronomy and watching (I stress the word watching) sports. I was also President of the PL Local Councilors Section from 2002 to 2008. Now I am a Member of the Standing Committee for Foreign and European Affairs and also the working group of EU documents scrutiny.

    On a humerous note:

I hope Dr. Muscat and his team don’t read this and get any (other) brilliant ideas.

    • JPS says:

”have 2 kids Gabriel 3 yr old and Kayleigh 4 months” – does he change his bio on a monthly basis to update his childrens’ ages?

[Daphne – No, I think he only did it the once. His four-month-old is now at school, remember. He has to drive her there. KAYLEIGH. Enough said. Named after the Marillion hit, no doubt.]

    • Natalie says:

“watching (I stress the word watching) sports”

Maa! Such a pathetic attempt at humour.

  4. Gakku says:

His car runs on dijzil not petlor.

  5. TROY says:

He missed the match at Ta’ Qali just to spend time on Facebook talking about his car’s gas consumption?

    What about standing his ground?

  6. Jozef says:

Seeing how they keep going around for agreements, this could be an idea, developed in collaboration with Apple.

What we get instead, is an opposition hell bent on blocking the natural progression of things, hinged on everything unsustainable. Luciano should calculate what percentage is spent on trying to park and have a look at the turning circle of this thing.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOW20FPluXo

And to hell with the ricers.

  7. Matt B says:

Luciano is now whining away about how he can’t have a smaller car.

When David Farrugia (the chap at the bottom of your screenshot) tried talking some sense into him, saying that even though he’s 6ft 2in, he can still drive a Toyota Vitz, Luciano replied “forsi il-partit tieghek jaghtikom karozzi tal-magics li huma extendable imma zghar fl-istess hin.”

Pathetic. It’s common sense that if you can’t afford something, you go for something that is more affordable, but it’s useless telling the likes of Luciano that. L-aqwa li ma jistax ihallas, imbghad imur igorr ghalkemm hu t-tort tieghu.

  8. Vincent says:

A back of the envelope calculation:

One gallon is equivalent to 3.78 litres. Diesel costs €1.40 per litre. Therefore one gallon of diesel costs €5.29.

He travelled 10,000 miles in seven months. Assuming the same routine, he will travel 17,143 miles in 12 months.

One gallon of diesel keeps this car running for 40 miles. 428.6 gallons of diesel are required to cover a distance of 17,143 miles.

The current cost of 428.6 gallons of diesel is €2,267.

Conclusion: Luciano Busuttil probably needs to brush up his arithmetic, too.

    • Reporter says:

      He said EUR 2500 … That’s just EUR 250 difference … +/- 10%

I think you are being unfair.

Otherwise, the guy is really a blasted idiot.

      • La Redoute says:

EUR250 can keep a smaller-sized family car going for weeks – a car that can accommodate four full-sized adults is one which can accommodate a short man, his short wife, and their two toddler children.

    • Joseph says:

      1 US gallon = 3.75 litres

      1 imperial gallon = 4.54 litres

In Malta, when we speak of gallons, we always mean the imperial gallon.

    • AJS says:

I have a 1.6cc and drive similar mileage but I only spend about 1600 a year (eW-ross). Why does he have to buy a guzzler?

  9. el bandido guapo says:

Why exactly does he do 10000 miles in seven months? Just cruising? Or because it is worth his while to do so?

[Daphne – I thought about that myself. When I had to go to an office every day, for work that involved meetings all over the place, and also had to ferry three children around morning, noon and night, seven days a week (this was when they were a lot older than two – two year-olds go nowhere) I averaged a thousand miles a month.]

If it’s “insostenibbli” then he should stop doing something that results in his fuel bill being thus and do something “sostenibbli” with his time instead.

    • Natalie says:

That’s the thing. He still finds it ‘sostenibbli’, otherwise he’ll swallow his pride and change his car for something smaller.

But these people would have us believe that we’re all on the verge of getting kwashiorkor – that’s the swollen belly starvation disease.

  10. canon says:

The other question is: when does he work?

  11. Dee says:

Luciano Busuttil is not the sharpest toothpick in the toothpick box.

  12. Anthony says:

As I said yesterday, he would have utilised his free time much better going to Ta’ Qali rather than to the House.

He would have been in his element there watching football.

You do not even require an IQ to do that.

  13. M. Bormann says:

I can’t stand how the majority of Maltese refer to engines as “19” or “10”, when they’re actually 1.9 and 1.0 litre engines, or 1900cc and 1000cc engines. What’s worse is they think that “19” also indiciates the power output in horsepower of the car, when it doesn’t. Bloody idiots.

  14. M. Bormann says:

The bit about not fitting in a Toyota Vitz is also complete rubbish, as even 6’5″ Jeremy Clarkson could fit in the driver’s seat.

Also, a 1.0 L Toyota Vitz is probably only as economical as a 1.9 turbodiesel. It’s not what you drive, it’s how you drive it.

A 1.9 turbodiesel doesn’t need to be pressed that hard to go up a hill in a fully laden car, while a 1.0 L Vitz would need to be revved to high heaven, and would consume more fuel.

I had a 1.0 L Vitz and used to spend €60 a week on it, since I used to do a lot of driving, most of which was way over the speed limit.

I now have a 2.2 L turbodiesel Alfa Romeo 159 and spend only €30 a week, since I travel almost everywhere in 6th gear due to the torque of the engine.

  15. silverbug says:

    Jien ma nafx x’ghandu, imma jien Alfa 147 ghandi u €30 a week fix-xitwa u €40 fis-sajf mihabba l-AC.

U xtrajtha biex inkun komda u komda inhallas ghall-kumdita. Jekk nixba inhallas, nixtri wahda izghar.

Pero, zgur li mhux se nhossni anqas minn hadd b’karrozza izghar. Forsi ghalhekk hawn min jixtri karrozza kbira – for the image.

  16. Bubu says:

Well I have a lowly Vitz, I’m well nigh on 6″ and I find it extremely comfortable. Actually the Vitz has a lot more leg room than many other larger cars.

  17. Kevin Fenech says:

    Here’s your solution Dr. Busuttil:

  18. ciccio says:

Did anyone here really expect Luciano to drive a Smart?

    • Lilla says:

Actually, I think people who drive Smart cars are overcompensating for their lack of intellectual ability.

You know, like insecure men overcompensating with a large car for their inadequate male parts. So a Smart car would be perfect for Lucky Luciano.

      But that’s just my opinion.

    • Angus Black says:

      He’s not Smart enough.

Maybe a Lada or a Skoda, the Labour Party’s favourite cars of the 70s and 80s especially since they were produced in Communist countries and with the possibility of a kickback for Labour’s cause?

  19. toyger says:

2500 a year on fuel?! My work involves driving around all day, peak traffic hours and all, and the maximum I spend is 2000. Maybe he needs to buy a new, more economical car.

  20. Ian says:

    Bloody hell 10,000 miles in 7 months…some 18000 odd miles a year?

Re the comments he received, I love how Facebook appeals to these attention-seekers, who now have a very neat tool to air their ridiculousness – only to be bitten in the ass while the rest of us can look and laugh.

Are we meant to call these people ‘Honourable’?

  21. gb says:

Seeing as his kids go to Chiswick House School, this means he can afford school fees around €2500 – €2700 per year each.
