Are these people for real? They think they’re picking up where Mintoff left off.

Inspector Gadget he will give you de laptop

The Labour Party has released a statement to the media, saying that a new government (no mention of the dread word Labour, because this is a movement, remember) will ensure that information and communications technology (ICT) will be accessible to companies of all sizes.

Pull me back. I must have gone down the rabbit-hole.

What are they on about?

Gvern Ġdid jara li l-qasam tal-ICT ikun aċċessibbli għal kumpaniji ta’ kull daqs

Gvern ġdid jemmen li l-qasam tal-ICT m’għandux ikun aċċessibbli biss għal kumpaniji kbar iżda għal kumpaniji ta’ kull daqs, b’mod speċjali kumpaniji Maltin u Għawdxin.

Dan qalu l-Mexxej tal-Partit Laburista Dr Joseph Muscat waqt laqgħa ma’ delegazzjoni miċ-Chamber of Commerce, li matulha ddiskuta numru ta’ proposti f’dan il-qasam.

Dr Muscat qal li l-punt tat-tluq għandu jkun li l-Gvern jokkupa l-inqas spazju possibbli, fejn jieħu l-irwol ta’ regolatur u faċilitatur u jagħti l-ispazju lis-settur privat.

Filwaqt li saħaq fuq il-ħtieġa li nattiraw aktar investiment barrani f’dan il-qasam, il-Mexxej Laburista enfasizza l-bżonn ta’ aktar inċentivi lill-kumpaniji Maltin u Għawdxin biex ikomplu jikbru u jimirħu.

Dr Muscat qal li fl-aħħar 25 sena saru passi kbar ‘il quddiem fil-qasam tal-ICT f’pajjiżna, u Gvern Ġdid se jkompli jtejjeb fuq dak li diġa’ sar.

Min-naħa tiegħu, Keith Fearne spjega l-irwol tal-ICT Business Section fi ħdan iċ-Chamber of Commerce u ppreżenta numru ta’ punti għall-konsiderazzjoni fit-tfassil tal-programm elettorali tal-Partit Laburista.

As a professional working in ICT, I think this guy has no idea what he’s talking about.

As an individual not working in ICT, I can tell you without any doubt that this guy has no idea what he’s talking about.

  2. La Redoute says:

Mintoff practically banned technology so Joseph thinks it’s amazingly progressive to pick up where his hero left off and allow small and medium enterprises to have access to technology.

  3. Roy says:

    Thank you Joseph.

Sent from my BlackBerry synced with my Outlook, backed-up to my servers, being seen by my secretary. From the beach.

    Plonker.

Dawn jistghu ma jaghmlu xejn programm elettorali u jghidu biss li se jkomplu fuq dak it-tajjeb li hemm. Din diga qalha darb’ohra.

It’s long been my understanding that that is exactly what they aim to do since they have no new ideas to put forward.

But anyone with a shred of intelligence would know that in an ever changing world, ‘just carrying on as usual’ will not work beyond the first new/problematic situation that arises.

From then on it will be management by crises: half-baked ideas, short-sighted decisions and a hotchpotch of short-term solutions.

Our economy won’t stand a chance.

  5. Angus Black says:

Allura biex naqtghu ftit ghatx, hemm xi hadd mill-Kamra tal-Kummerc (Chamber of Commerce) li jista jghidilna x’kienu dawn il-proposti li offra Joseph?
Jista jghidilna kemm minn dawn il-proposti diga qieghdin jigu implimentati?

Jew issa tal CofC qieghdin attenti minhabba l-possibbilta li Joseph jilhaq l-izghar Prim Ministru fi ftit xhur ohra?

Il-Kamra tal-Kummerc ghandha tipprepara ruhha ghall-eventwalita li tilqa lil-Prim Ministru zghir u ttih rigal xieraq – ‘playpen’ biex ikollu post protett fejn jilghab bil-gugarelli.

Ara jahasra f’hiex inhu mohhu! X’ala l-bubu s-sitwazzjoni f’pajjizi li qed jiddejnu biljuni ma banek barranin, filwaqt li l-gvern Malti ghandu dejn mac-cittadini tieghu stess? X’jiddejjaq mill fatt li aktar ma jiftah halqu w jikkawza incertezza, jekk jilhaq prim ministru jkollu jaffaccja l-muzika hu stess? Dan ma jahsibx daqsxejn il-quddiem, jew l-ispag qed jissikkawlu ghonqu w dalwaqt jisfa bla nifs?

    Miskin Anglu, fid-dell ta’ Muscat.

  7. qahbu says:

This plonker (love that word) has been chatting with businessmen who have missed out on government tenders and have complained that they have missed out ‘because MITA are a service provider themselves.’

Small companies find it hard to compete with the bigger boys – for many reasons – they complain to Jowsef and out goes a press release to bring them on side. This has been his tactic with every sector where someone has complained.

These are the promises he keeps making – he says nothing but gives them comfort. Of course, when elected he has no intention of doing anything about it because those that complain are usually incompetent and have an expectation – a little like Labour – an expectation to govern because they exist.

  8. FP says:

I’m hoping that the Uffiċċju tal-Kommunikazzjoni tal-Partit Laburista cannot even quote the Great Leader correctly.

I mean, if Keith Fearne is involved, surely there must be something beyond the obvious which his party failed to grasp. I trusted him as my two children’s surgeon, and I’m hoping he’s no idiot.

  9. ciccio says:

Maybe he is promising free wi-fi, again?

  10. David Meilak says:

The surgeon is CHRIS Fearne, Keith Fearne is someone else.

  11. Angus Black says:

Somehow I think that Anglu takes a better picture riding an elephant.

  12. C Falzon says:

He will set up free WiFi at the monti so that the small businesses there can benefit from the wonders of ICT.

  13. Lomax says:

    Let’s dissect it shall we?

“Gvern ġdid jemmen li l-qasam tal-ICT m’għandux ikun aċċessibbli biss għal kumpaniji kbar iżda għal kumpaniji ta’ kull daqs, b’mod speċjali kumpaniji Maltin u Għawdxin.”

Any government after the next election shall be a Gvern gdid. Even the PN in government will be a gvern gdid, jew ahjar, legislatura gdida. Furthermore, to my knowledge nobody ever said that ICT should be open only to large companies.

And, pray, which other companies are there in Malta apart from “kumpaniji Maltin u Ghawdxin”? What does “b’mod specjali kumpaniji Maltin u Ghawdxin” mean? “Maltin u Ghawdxin” as opposed to what exactly? Do they want to create a distinction between Maltese-owned companies (this Ghawdxin denomination is mythical to me) and foreign-owned companies?

Because otherwise I see no reason to say “b’mod specjali kumpanniji Maltin u Ghawdxin” when there is no Gozitan Register of Companies. So, if they mean all Maltese-registered companies, I reiterate, as opposed to what exactly?

“Dan qalu l-Mexxej tal-Partit Laburista Dr Joseph Muscat waqt laqgħa ma’ delegazzjoni miċ-Chamber of Commerce, li matulha ddiskuta numru ta’ proposti f’dan il-qasam.” Interesting how the proposals do not get one single mention. We are still in the dark as to what these proposals amount to.

“Dr Muscat qal li l-punt tat-tluq għandu jkun li l-Gvern jokkupa l-inqas spazju possibbli, fejn jieħu l-irwol ta’ regolatur u faċilitatur u jagħti l-ispazju lis-settur privat.” This has been Gonzi’s prerogrative since day one.

“Filwaqt li saħaq fuq il-ħtieġa li nattiraw aktar investiment barrani f’dan il-qasam, il-Mexxej Laburista enfasizza l-bżonn ta’ aktar inċentivi lill-kumpaniji Maltin u Għawdxin biex ikomplu jikbru u jimirħu.”

    Really?

Joseph has to understand that he can no longer say “hemm bzonn” without actually saying how this “bzonn” will be satisfied. He will be in the driving seat. He has to tell us what he means by “aktar incentivi”. What exactly? Please tell us. We await such illumination with bated breath.

“Dr Muscat qal li fl-aħħar 25 sena saru passi kbar ‘il quddiem fil-qasam tal-ICT f’pajjiżna, u Gvern Ġdid se jkompli jtejjeb fuq dak li diġa’ sar.” Wow! He acknowledges that something has been done.

What is this “Gvern Gdid”? Qed jibza’ illi jekk juza l-kelma “Laburista” d-delegati tal-Kamra tal-Kummerc jitnaffru? How will this Gvern Gdid (sounds like a mysterious entity, reminds me of dictators who create myths around their persona) will improve on what has already been achieved?

Tal-biki. These same people will be running out country in less than twelve months. Tal-biki. They do not even know how to report on a meeting, of course, always assuming that there was something to report about.

    • ciccio says:

Some time ago this was “Gvern Gdid immexxi minni.”
I see that Muscat has now been advised not to scare voters with the last bit.

  14. Dee says:

Keith Fearne is some sort of IT expert and he’s Chris Fearne’s brother.
But isnt Michael Farrugia the Labour spokesperson for IT?

    • maryanne says:

Don’t expect the Chamber of Commerce to utter a word.

      Management Team

      Keith Fearne – Managing Director

Keith Fearne has a long experience in running commercial operations in the local ICT market. Managing the engineering services department of a leading systems house in Malta for 7 years, he was involved directly in a number of high profile Government and private sector ICT projects.

He later was CEO at maltaNET, Malta’s leading ISP, for 7 years and subsequently Chief Commercial Officer at GO plc. He is the Chairman of the IT business Section of the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry.

  16. ciccio says:

Every Labour “policy” is made up of the same key elements, for which I will suggest an explanation below.

“A lot of progress has been made on this matter by the present Nationalist government, and Labour will continue to build on that.” It’s a deviation tactic. It means “In 9+15 years of opposition we have come up with no alternatives, so we will just carry on doing the same as present.”

“More needs to be done. ” It means that “we have no idea what can be done differently, but we will just try to impress you into thinking that we have more interesting ideas.”

“We will provide more incentives.” This means that “We have no idea what needs to be done, so we will just pretend that by throwing the hard-earned money of others at problems, they will be solved.”

In normal circumstances, there should also be a guarantee. But beware of the small print. It will contain words like “Ahna nitnejku minn din il-garanzija” and “din il-garanzija hija bhal karta tal-incova.”
