Shock horror: immigrants will mean different food shops to meet their needs

Published: July 4, 2012 at 8:15pm

Apparently, Maltese identity depends on the exclusive availability of luncheon meet, corned beef, laham tal-friza, detergents and luminata. And on cooking bragioli and stuffat.

And this woman lives in London, if you please – and nobody’s thrown her out.

Rose Bentley
we will not keep our identity..immigrants mixing with maltese will mean..different food in shops to meet their cultural needs,,

Rose Bentley
people dont bother cooking stuffat and bragoili anymore.

When seeing these people talk one could notice a pattern. No one is talking about them as human being but about the change in culture that they are bringing. I live in msida a place where in the last 13 years has seen a huge change in the people living here. I must say that 13 years ago msida was a safer place then it is today. Now a days because of these people it aint safe as it used to be.

However one must be carefull how to interpret this. I believe that its not because they are basically bad people but because they come here full of hope for their future and they end up here in hell, seeing us with expemsive cars, nice homes, great jobs, and they have nothing and we treat them like shit.

I believe that all cultures are great, diverse and that they show how big the human being is to have invented so many diverse cultures according to the nature around him, however as can be evidenced from big cities multiculture does not work, and even if it did the world as a whole will be loosing its cultural heritage.

“I believe that all cultures are great, diverse and that they show how big the human being is to have invented so many diverse cultures according to the nature around him…”

I disagree. Not all cultures are great, but then there is the law to keep bad “cultures” in check.

“…however as can be evidenced from big cities multiculture does not work, and even if it did the world as a whole will be loosing its cultural heritage”.

Multiculturalism has barely been tried. The trouble in big cities is the result of segregation, not multiculturalism. In any case, culture is diverse and constantly evolving. And in any case, I wouldn’t weep over the loss of some of our cultural heritage. But I wouldn’t deny other people their own culture, provided that the culture is in line with fundamental human rights.

    • Jozef says:

Malta doesn’t have the critical mass of a big city, the numbers and brutal suburbs made 20 storey concrete tower blocks simply aren’t there.

Areas like Msida, Gzira and the lower parts of Guardamangia have taken on the sembiance of depressed areas primarily because of the main arteries surrounding them. Given that these places manifest community, they’re still alive.

A public transport regime, the restriction of traffic and the idea that public roads are outdoor space, not carriageways, are proven ways to combat this. Creating a panic in Balzan because of its open centre is speculation.

To continue to my prvious post, i believe that the best way forward is to these people in their country, to remove thier corrupt goverments. That way the world will be a better place. And not, not letting them enter malta or mis treat them. I

I have eaten better food in Africa than in Malta.

  4. A Montebello says:

    Damn, I just ordered sushi.

    • silvio says:

Careful, you might be treading on thin ice.

Don’t you realise that you could be charged with being a racist? Why did you order Japanese food? What’s wrong with Italian or Maltese food?

I think this whole matter is now bordering on the ridiculous.

Say I’m attacked by a fellow Maltese and I defend myself and happily break his jaw. I’m taken to court and charged with causing him bodily harm, but if the same man happened to be an illegal immigrant they will call me a racist.

  5. Sandro Bugeja says:

For the past countless years, food stalls at Maltese fetsas have been selling hot dogs, hamburgers, kebabs, popcorn, doughnuts and candyfloss.

Interestingly, these alien foods are consumed by a predominantly Maltese clientele. This invasion started ages ago and immigrants (legal or not) certainly aren’t responsible for the shift in our culinary habits.

    • P Shaw says:

Perfectly right – what about ‘helwa tat-Tork’, which is Middle Eastern halva?

The Fraench love the couscous introduced by the Algerian and Tunisian immigrants. They even adopted it in the French cuisine.

  6. Jozef says:

She wouldn’t have been thrilled at Labour’s love sexy thingy, it was full of ethnic food stalls.

    Lanqas burgher wiehed ma’ kellhom.

  7. David Farrugia says:

Whilst all people should be treated with dignity, we should all come to terms that multiculturalism is a failure, everywhere, maybe except nordic countries.

It will be an even greater failure, especially in Malta. We are not a disciplined people. Look what happens in village festas and you will understand immediately.

Now imagine, just imagine, what would happen should a group of ‘alien’ people organise their own festivals, with all their sights and sounds.

Many immigrants, find it hard and in a way are reluctant to integrate. That is how ghettos are formed in larger cities. One should also remember the Australian prime minister’s comments on immigration, regarding this subject.

I cannot understand the reasoning of the Jesuits and many Aloysians (with all due respect to you, Daphne).

[Daphne – I’m not an Aloysian, but a Dorothean.]

I would suggest the Jesuits to conduct an experiment. Rent some villas in Madliena, apartments in Tigne and Portomaso, and house African immigrants inside them for long term. Then we will see how the affluent and ‘cultured’ react.

One day multiculturalism might be a reality, but not in the foreseeable future. A change in mentality of the locals has to take place. Immigrants would have to adapt to the culture of the host country.

I’m not saying it is impossible, but not in the current generation.

    • Ken il malti says:

The Jesuits are pushing for multiculturalism to places that are populated by mostly white/european stock and Christian save for a few nations in South America like Argentina and Uruguay for now, just near where they had their “Reductions” aka Jesuit colonies in the past.

Notice they do not call for multiculturalism in China or Japan, two homogenous populated nations that the Jesuits have had a lot of influence in for centuries.

      Why is this so?

Well, they are following in the footsteps of one of their coadjutors, named Richard Coudenhove-Kalergi and his book from the year 1925 “Practical Idealism” and it is the exact plan as outlined in that book as you see unfolding around you in the UK and Europe today.

In his book it details plans to destroy the white-race and eventually destroy all races as well as destroying national sovereignty of the E.U States and Britain.

The white-race has to be destroyed in order to aid the easy acceptance of and control by military dictatorship of the E.U regions to be implemented in the coming post-democratic society which we are now transitioning into as freedoms are taken away by the day by the Fascist Marxist system known as the New World Order and the largest obstacle to this plan comes from the white race as they will expect better than what is in store for them and will cause problems.

Apparently these unelected and hidden social engineers are the biggest racists of all, something they accuse others when they complain about their plan so to shut them up.

Not even tiny Malta was spared and when you consider that in past eras our conquerers thought that the maltese are not really part of the white race.

    • Kenneth Cassar says:

“Whilst all people should be treated with dignity, we should all come to terms that multiculturalism is a failure, everywhere, maybe except nordic countries”.

Multiculturalism has barely been tried. The trouble comes from segregation, which is what we actually see.

“Now imagine, just imagine, what would happen should a group of ‘alien’ people organise their own festivals, with all their sights and sounds”.

What’s the problem with that? I hate village festas and the Isle of MTV’s music. But I would never even think of spoiling other people’s fun. Now let me tell you what SHOULD happen if a group of immigrants (many Maltese people are more “alien” to me than immigrants) were to organise their own festival and some wise guys caused trouble: They should be arrested and arraigned in court for hate-crimes (among other things, as the case may be). There is no excuse. If you don’t like it, go elsewhere during the festival. That’s what I do when my locality’s festa is on.

“Many immigrants, find it hard and in a way are reluctant to integrate. That is how ghettos are formed in larger cities”.

I can’t blame them. If I were one of them, I would probably be suspicious of Maltese people, judging by the comments in The Times Online.

“I would suggest the Jesuits to conduct an experiment. Rent some villas in Madliena, apartments in Tigne and Portomaso, and house African immigrants inside them for long term. Then we will see how the affluent and ‘cultured’ react”.

People are not “guinea pigs” to be used for experiments (neither should guinea pigs, but let me stay on topic). But if immigrants were given permanent accomodation in Madliena, Tigne and Portomaso and the other locals complain just for their being immigrants, well, they can stuff their bigotry and grin and bear it.

“One day multiculturalism might be a reality, but not in the foreseeable future. A change in mentality of the locals has to take place. Immigrants would have to adapt to the culture of the host country”.

That kind of argument is self-defeating and circular. A change of mentality cannot happen while immigrants are segregated.

    • Andre says:

Multiculturalism comes about when there is no integration. How many individuals are willing to help immigrants integrate?

There are some security issues connected to migration – but these cannot be dealt with at the expense of human dignity.

I think the main point which should be made is that, in most cases, the Maltese government cannot negotiate any form of return for two reasons:
      – in some cases, there is no legitimate government to negotiate a return with.
      – In other cases, the migrants’ personal security and safety cannot be guaranteed on repatriation.

Fortunately, these principles are enshrined in international law – and hopefully all governments will accept this and abide by them.

It is a delicate subject because any rational argument one tries to make is often hijacked by the far-right or by some people (like Muscat and his band) who have no idea how complex the situation is.

    • Johann Camilleri says:

“we should all come to terms that multiculturalism is a failure, everywhere, maybe except nordic countries.”

Using your argument, if Nordic countries can’t do it, why can’t we? Apart from the fact that far fewer people there are born with a massive chip on their shoulder?

“One should also remember the Australian prime minister’s comments on immigration, regarding this subject.”

You DO know that was a hoax, don’t you?

“I cannot understand the reasoning of the Jesuits”

Well, being Christian they probably follow teachings like “do unto others as you would have them do unto you” and “Whatever you do to the least of my brethren you do unto me”

“Then we will see how the affluent and ‘cultured’ react.”

Do you equate villas in Madliena and apartments in Portomaso with being ‘cultured’? How little you know.

“Immigrants would have to adapt to the culture of the host country.”

Or perhaps we can learn from each other? Why do you think the US remains the richest and most powerful country on earth?

  8. Ken il malti says:

I made some pastizzi tal-pizelli from scratch.

I had to figure out how to make the dough by trial and error, but I persisted and now I am reaping the rewards in flakey and greasy Maltese junk food goodness… Mmmmm.

  9. Riff Raff says:

I’m not proud that you’re Maltese, Rose Bentley.

  10. Lara says:

What a stupid thing to say and think… tal-biki.

  11. David says:

I do not think Ms Bentley is an illegal immigrant in London as she was born in England. However if she were an illegal immigrant, she would risk being thrown out.

Besides I think you are aware what the current British PM stated on immigration and multiculturalism.

I did do a stuffat in England once, but the onions were terrible, they did not soften.

  15. Kenneth Cassar says:

Funny how these same people never seem to complain about McDonald’s. Not exactly Maltese or British food, is it?

  16. Mustafa' says:

Jekk inti daqshekk favur l-immigrazzjoni llegali ghaliex ma toffrilhomx kenn u titmaghhom u tlibbishom fuq il-proprjeta’ tieghek? Nies onesti qed jipiccaw arrestati minhabba l-agir mahmug u kriminali ta’ uhud minn dawn l-illegali? fejnha s-serjeta’ tieghek?

    • Kenneth Cassar says:

      @ Mustafa’:

“Jekk inti daqshekk favur l-immigrazzjoni llegali ghaliex ma toffrilhomx kenn u titmaghhom u tlibbishom fuq il-proprjeta’ tieghek?”

Xbajna nisimghuh dan l-argument idjotiku. L-ewwel nett hadd m’hu favur l-immigrazzjoni illegali, imma xi whud minnha ghandhom qalb bizzejjed biex ma jqisux il-but qabel id-drittijiet umani, specjalment id-dritt ghall-hajja. Rigward jekk nitimghuhomx u nlibbsuhom fuq il-propjeta taghna, ahna nhallsu t-taxxi biex kif ahna nitimghu u nlibbsu Maltin li ma jridux jahdmu u li jimlewna bi tfal li ma jistghux imantnu wahedhom, inlibbsu u nitimghu ukoll nies li verament ghandhom bzonn u mhux b’kapricc jew injoranza.

“Taf jew ma tafx li dawn qed jiswew lill-kaxxa u lil butna miljuni ta’ ewros? B’laham haddiehor kullhadd amerikan!”

Minghajr ma ninhela nistaqsik ghall-istatistici li cert li ma ghandekx, nghidlek biss li min jevadi t-taxxa jew jghamel bhal dawk li semmejt iktar il-fuq, ukoll qed jiswina l-flus. Barra min hekk, is-sens ta umanita lejn il-proxxmu u d-drittijiet umani jigu qabel kollox.

“U taf li dawn qed ikunu r-rovina ta’ nies dicenti f’pajjizna????? Nies onesti qed jipiccaw arrestati minhabba l-agir mahmug u kriminali ta’ uhud minn dawn l-illegali? fejnha s-serjeta’ tieghek?”

      Jiswew lil butek?

Somehow, I don’t think so. The fuss made about ‘our’ taxes is loudest among those who pay least.

  17. Shopper says:

Arkadia, Greens and Mercato supermarkets have shelves with Russian foods all labelled in Russian.

It seems there are enough Russian immigrants in the area to justify the full shelves. Nobody complains about the Russians.

  18. Allamana says:

Can somebody please tell me where our love for pizza, pasta, corned beef, butter, lard, puddings, couscous, kebabs came from? Bormla? Birgu? Valletta?

They came from our interaction (or rather falling off the back of an army or navy truck) with Britain, Italy, Turkey, Marocco,

So what is new? We can still have our pastizzi (originally from Naples), bragioli (which are Sicilian by the way), bigilla (Greece) and the rest.

  19. Angus Black says:

The city I live in takes pride for the fact that it has ethnic restaurants serving food from all over the world.

  20. Lomax says:

    Ahna m’ahniex proud biha imma.

And, why, I love ethnic food as much as any foodie in London. For goodness’ sake, why don’t racists just shut up?
