Good. Now we can move on.

So Tonio Borg has been approved by a fairly comfortable margin – 386 in favour and 281 against -despite some people’s best efforts.

Indeed, very good. Let’s move on. Prosit, Tonio.

Tonio got what he deserved. Now let’s not just move own but carry on with the good work started by EFA and continued by Lawrence Gonzi.

  4. Common sense prevailed and misinformed prejudices didn’t.

At least we now have a new Commissioner who is squeaky clean, unlike his predecessor. Min jaf kemm ghandu zaqqu tugaw.

This vote will wipe the smirk off some people`s faces.

  6. Roundhead says:

The way the German Greens and socialists argued in this matter makes one think that they have forgotten what happened in the Nazi era.

To be different meant the concentration camp.

Today’s German Greens and Socialists are acting in the same way ostracising those who differ from their opinion.

You don’t have to be a Naziskin to be Nazi; only a supporter of the german Green or Socialist party.

Of all the crap written about the opponents of Tonio Borg, this comment takes the biscuit.

Anybody who reads it, and finds themselves nodding in agreement, needs psychiatric care.

Tonio Borg has been supported by a majority. Now he must be allowed space to work. Those, like me, who find his world-view repulsive, are at least satisfied that he has been put through the wringer and exposed to severe scrutiny.

This is only right and proper in a serious democratic process. It is nothing to do with Nazism.

Just as satisfying was the discovery that his conservative views are not held quite as axiomatically as many had suspected. His willingness to give written assurances was a positive and no easy move on his part.

Maybe Tonio Borg himself has had a chance to reflect on some of the more extreme positions that have been the hall-mark of his career thus far? I certainly don’t expect to see him fronting any crack-pot anti-abortion movements, or making more homophobic comments, any time soon.

  7. Rita Camilleri says:

Why are there loads of comments on timesofmalta.com saying it’s all thanks to the PL MEPs?

[Daphne – Because the army was organised and ready to go.]

  8. Anna says:

I’m getting to love this country. Never a dull moment.

Don’t miss the next episode – who will replace Tonio Borg as the new PN deputy leader?

  9. patrick mifsud says:

Idhol timesofmalta.com u ara il-comments please. Qed jghidu li imnalla kienu PL ghax kieku ma giex approvat.

Dawn l-istess nies li kienu kontra l-EU jew qed nghix f’dinja ohra jien?

  10. Walter Cronkite says:

And now we have at least one metric with which to measure Labour and its policies. We know that when the European Socialists approve an MLP nominee, it will mean that at least in Europe, the MLP is proclaiming itself to be pro-abortion.

    Not criticising, just sayin…..

  11. AJS says:

According to the pro-Labour comments on timesofmalta.com, it was Joseph Muscat and his clout cum high standing in the European Parliament that won Dr Borg the vote.

Johorguhom minn ghajnhom dawn il-kummenti banali w infantili.

    • Rita Camilleri says:

“AJS – If I’m not mistaken, Eddie Fenech Adami, had once said that in a couple of years time the PL/MLP will be taking credit for them having worked for membership in the EU u nahseb li kellu ragun..

    • George says:

“Johorguhom minn ghajnhom dawn il-kummenti banali w infantili.” They don’t know any better. Joseph Muscat leads a party full of fools who are being fed and easily swallow “il-kummenti banali w infantili”.

  12. Joe Azzopardi says:

Still waiting for Cassola’s reaction. Three weeks of hard work down the drain.

  13. Albert Farrugia says:

Had the PL not given its full support, there would have been no approval of Tonio Borg.

The Maltese Labour MEPs were ready to break ranks with the Socialist allies to support the Maltese candidate and because of their pressure the European Socialists did not vote as a group. Just recognise this simple fact.

Now we will see in 18 months time whether the PN opposition will support Borg’s successor with the same zest. From now on, this will be the yardstick by which Maltese political parties’ behaviour in Europe will be measured.

  14. Taks Fors says:

This means that when Dalli wanted to become PN’s leader he lost out to Lawrence Gonzi. Then he thought he got it made when he became an EU commissioner, only to lose his job to Lawrence Gonzi’s deputy. Mhux meravilja hu Bastjan jew?

  15. xmun says:

Tonio’s vote was 386 in favour, 281 against and 28 abstained (total 695 votes).

If one takes the total votes of the parties who had declared their vote in favour of Tonio
    271 votes from the EPP
    52 votes from the Conservatives
34 votes from the Freedom Party

totalling 357 votes. + 4 PL mep votes. This translates to another 25 votes from the European Socialists.

Joseph Muscat and his 4 MEPS do not have much to shout about. They did not manage to garner any sympathy, or rather did not bother.

European Dignity Watch, the NGO which had mounted a stout defence of Dr Borg’s values, said democracy had prevailed.
“Despite the attempts of intolerant special interest groups to discredit Dr Borg because of his personal beliefs on social issues such as abortion and marriage, Dr Borg proved to be a suitable candidate for the position. MEPs were convinced not only by his professional qualification but by his excellent performance at parliamentary hearings last week.
“This is a great day for Europe’s democracy. Today the fundamental principles of the European Union — subsidiarity, freedom of conscience and free speech — have been affirmed,” it said.

AD and Arnold Cassola should feel quite ashamed of themselves

  16. Aunt Hetty says:

I hope that the result wiped off the habitual sneering grimace off Prof Cazzola’s face.

  17. Joe Azzopardi says:

Some people will have nightmares tonight.
