Numbers

There are 270 MEPS in the EPP Group. Tonio Borg was voted in by 386 MEPs.

(Apologies for the typos in the numbers yesterday – doing too many things at once…)

Actually 386 in favour, 281 against, 28 abstentions. What are you on about, Daphne?

[Daphne – I broke my golden rule of always reading it back.]

  2. Anna says:

Daphne, can you please explain further because I’m having a dumb moment?

[Daphne – I’ve corrected it. You weren’t having a dumb moment. I was having a chaotic one. Bad idea to try typing with one hand while sorting through papers with the other and thinking about something else entirely.]

  3. bystander says:

So the NO vote won again ha ha ha.

  4. Hip Hip says:

As far as i know 50 votes from the Democrats correct me if am wrong.

  5. Vanni says:

Didn’t quite get where you got the 81 from……. imma ha niehdu prima.

[Daphne – Typing while running around. Should have been 381 (or 386, actually).]

Magistrate Peralta should sober up, or better still retire.

  7. Paul Borg says:

Wow !! are we to jump for joy? No way. He was not a good choice to start off with.

  8. Herman says:

One News 19:30hrs – “Tonio Borg ġab 368 vot (tlett mija u tmienja u sittin vot)”, mentioned in headlines and in main news item. Should be “386 vot”.

  9. Anna says:

Oh.My.God. Franco Debono is now posting homemade videos on his blog. Like Saviour Balzan, it’s just him talking to the camera. I wonder what JPOS will do now to get back in the limelight.

  10. Aunt Hetty says:

In the short interview MEP Grech gave to One News, he wore a pale-blue tie. On the one he gave to TVM News, he wore a blood red one.

    • Rita Camilleri says:

and Aunty Hetty, its was all about “jien, jien, u jien”, dont know if anyone noticed but he spoke mostly about HE did.

  11. Gahan says:

I don’t find secret voting democratic. How would I know for sure how the MEP representing me, voted? How would I know wether one of our MEP’s backstabbed Dr Borg?

How secure is the electronic voting system in the EU parliament?

    • What democracy? says:

I’d be extremely surprised if they all voted for him. Is it likely that they would bypass a chance to humiliate the government?

Hands up anyone who knows the identity of the owner of the ”hidden hand”.

It should not be all that difficult.

Look at who voted against Dr Borg, Dr Vella.

    • bystander says:

Hidden hand? There’s at least four. Zammit has two, Dr Kimberley the other two. Not so hidden. Maybe Dalli’s own hands are in the mix as well.

I don’t know much about Vella but I have already read enough of his bollocks to confirm he’s an appalling deadbeat.

    Do we need numbers?

This hurdle is well won and over.

Congratulations to Dr Tonio Borg and here’s wishing him all success as our (read all Maltese) new EU Commissioner.

Now onto the next hurdle …

  14. Gahan says:

It is worth noting that after subtracting the EPP group one in five MEP’s voted in favour of Borg.

Assuming that all EPP MEPs voted for Borg’s nomination.

It needed a swing of around 50 MEPs to get Borg approved.

My calculations show me that the Socialists were just not there. The PL MEPs did not convince their brothers to vote for Tonio. That shows that they are not considered as ‘insiders’.

Alfred Sant would have convinced them all, on such matters.
