Alfred Mifsud’s brother hoist by Labour’s ‘skandlu taz-zejt’ petard

Tarcisio Mifsud

The Labour Party didn’t have a clue that when it started this oil scandal business, its own financial controller, Joe Cordina, would be brought down and have to resign his position and with his candidature.

Now it’s getting messier for Labour, with charges about to be brought today against Tarcisio Mifsud, a former senior Enemalta official and brother to prominent Labour guru Alfred Mifsud, the man who employed Joseph Muscat at Crystal Finance Ltd.

Because Crystal Finance did not have an office in Gozo, Joseph Muscat and Alfred Mifsud used Joe Cordina’s office there for meetings with people on how to invest their money and where to put it.

I’m not suggesting here that Alfred Mifsud has anything to do with it, but I find it ironic. I don’t imagine that when banging on about the skandlu taz-zejt he thought for one moment that his brother would be hauled into it too.

And that brings me to another point: with all this talk about Swiss bank accounts and information on secret stashes of money, there are people who have begun to worry because Joseph Muscat, through his work for Crystal Finance before he became an MEP, knows what they’ve got and where they’ve put it.

It’s a natural concern to have. You really don’t expect the ‘investment adviser’ who’s sitting across the desk from you to turn up five years later as Leader of the Opposition, or to show such a predilection for storing away information on people to be used when appropriate.

Ah, Tarcisio Mifsud. He was all over the place, running down Austin Gatt.

It’s staring to look like this whole skandlu business was prompted by a desire for revenge. Why else pin blame on a minister who was rooting out people who were suspect?

If you have access to The Times archive (I don’t) have a look at
Thursday, September 26, 2002, page 11 – the Ombudsman’s report re Tarcisio Mifsud, might be interesting.

“Laws should favour the media but there must also be responsibility” – Joseph Muscat

How does putting someone in prison for criminal libel favour the media?

We already have too many half-hearted reporters, imagine having the possibility of a jail term hanging over their heads while doing their job.

  6. Wilson says:

This corruption story might have been going on since Labour days.

  7. Neil Dent says:

Yes, yes all well and good. But what about the tal-Lira clock? That’s the REAL story behind this. And why hasn’t Austin Gatt resigned? And why isn’t PBO in prison yet?

I seem to remember somebody, somewhere, saying ‘Not Fit For Purpose.’ Can’t think who.

  8. Neil Dent says:

This government-in-waiting has so many massive problems to contend with already, and I’m not even talking about their disaster of an electoral programme.

And yet I STILL remain convinced that they will been in power on 10/03. It’s going to be quite a ride there, Joseph. For all of us!

  9. P Shaw says:

I would not be surprised if Joseph Muscat had access to databases (and probably kept) with Crystal Finance’s clients and the amounts of assets they own.

  10. Adam says:

This guy is the Labour Party’s regular speaker on Enemalta debts. Unbelievable.

  11. Nighthawk says:

I seem to remember Alfred Mifsud writing an article in the times or the independent as Joey’s ex-boss, during the leadship campaign perhaps, claiming he was crap at his job. Can’t find it online though.

Is this the man who got beaten with a chain in his own home?

    • observer says:

Yes, he is. And a good beating at that, unfortunately.

I remember his blood-stained face peeping at The Times readers when the incident happened. I think it was on the morrow of the 2003 election.

    • Neil Dent says:

Yes – and humiliatingly paraded on TV without his toupee to show his injuries, for the benefit of Alfred Sant and the viewing public.

It was not a political attack – it was actually a deplorable act by a pair of disgruntled Enemalta workers, who were none too happy at Mifsud’s treatment of them at the time.

    Taking stock….

Anglu Farrugia was asked to resign because of an indiscreet comment about a magistrate.

Labour’s CEO made to resign from his position and candidacy because of a connection with the oil procurement scandal, even if presumed innocent until proven otherwise.

Toni Abela had a court case ‘postponed’ after he found a Labour policeman to oblige, but he is spared.

Toni Abela had ‘clear evidence’ of a drug deal at Safi LP club, but ‘did not inform Joseph or the police’… Instead he fired the bartender who had reported the incident to him!?

Joseph confirms that he knew nothing about the case and perhaps the ‘white block’ was confused with a ‘block of ice’.

The bartender had written to Joseph two years ago about being fired, but Joseph ‘fixed’ the problem by taking a picture with him!

Toni Abela confesses that Joseph knew about the case (how could he deny it?) – so Abela had previously lied.

During an interview with the Sunday Times, Joseph admitted he knew about the Safi case and that ‘he made a mistake not taking any action… that the decision was Abela’s problem, not his… that if Abela was a candidate, he would have to withdraw! Joseph had lied – a possible PM in two weeks time caught lying through his teeth!

If Joseph would expect Toni to withdraw from being a candidate, why would the same rule not apply to him as well? The elastic principle works well at the Labour Party.

Joseph insists that he is going nowhere (ain’t that the truth?) and that he would contest the election like nothing happened.

With this kind of judgement skill, who’s to doubt that he would make an incredible PM?

Now I know why Alfred always looks so mean and angry, His brother got all the hair.

[Daphne – It’s a wig. When he was attacked by those chain-wielding thugs, he wasn’t wearing it when he answered the door, and had wounds all over his scalp. He posed for press photographs without his wig. I think he sees it as a sort of hat.]
