Wikileaks US cables: “The possible long-range effects on Maltese society are disturbing indeed”

Published: April 13, 2013 at 9:00am

More from US cables on Wikileaks (the link to the actual thing, with even more information, is below):

NOT SATISFIED WITH BEING A ONE-MAN SHOW AS FAR AS THE EXECUTIVE BRANCH OF THE MALTESE GOVERNMENT IS CONCERNED, WHILE AT THE SAME TIME COMPLETELY CONTROLLING THE COUNTRY’S UNICAMERAL PARLIAMENT, MINTOFF HAS THIS WEEK TAKEN WHAT COULD BE THE FIRST OMINOUS STEP DOWN THE ROAD TOWARD EVENTUAL DOMINATION OF THE MALTESE JUDICIAL SYSTEM AS WELL.

PERHAPS THE ONLY REMAINING INSTITUTIONAL BARRIER TO AN ABSOLUTE MINTOFFIAN AUTOCRACY, THE FIERCELY INDEPENDENT MALTESE COURTS HAVE LONG BEEN A MAJOR BUGABOO FOR MINTOFF AND HIS MORE RADICAL LABOR PARTY SUPPORTERS. DURING THE RECENT ELECTION CAMPAIGN THERE WERE A NUMBER OF DEMANDS FROM LABORITES FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF “PEOPLE’S COURTS” IN MALTA.

AND ALTHOUGH MINTOFF HIMSELF DID NOT SPECIFICALLY ENDORSE THESE PROPOSALS, HIS OWN DISDAIN FOR LAWYERS, JUDGES, AND THE NICETIES OF LEGAL PROCESSES (EXCEPT WHEN THEY SUIT HIS OWN PURPOSES) HAVE LONG BEEN OBVIOUS. SO WHILE MINTOFF’S CURRENT MOVE AGAINST THE JUDICIARY HAS, PERHAPS, NOT BEEN TOO SURPRISING, THE POSSIBLE LONG-RANGE EFFECTS ON MALTESE SOCIETY ARE DISTURBING INDEED. MINTOFF, IN ESSENCE, HAS TOLD THE JUDICIARY TO DO THINGS HIS WAY — OR ELSE. THIS IS A BAD OMEN FOR THE FUTURE RULE OF LAW IN MALTA.

  1. Weird no ? says:

Well the word TAGHNA does disguise in Malta Taghna Lkoll hidden agendas however subconscious these maybe. It conveys disdain for establishments and state organs that command respect.

  2. Maria Xriha says:

Who were Mintoff’s advisors on this particular subject at that time? Are they still around today?

It seems that the mould has been recast in every aspect.

    Very interesting long term opinion.

    • H.P. Baxxter says:

Who were Mintoff’s electors at that time? Are they still around today? Of course. They’ve even raised a fresh generation in their mould.

  3. kram says:

Having seen Coleiro Preca’s visit to a an elderly lady living in a social housing apartment in the presence of the Housing Authority’s chairperson and the media isn’t that a type of people’s court?

    • trapezoid says:

Coleiro Preca qed taghti l-arja lil min ghamel hajtu jerda min fuq l-istat. Skond Coleiro Preca, il-post li hadet din il-parasita hu perikoluz; dan ghaliex hemm sappuniera nieqsa.

Gvern Nazzjonilsiat kien jaghti l-ghodda lin-nies biex javanzaw permezz ta’ l-edukazzjoni u tax-xoghol. Gvern Laburista iheggeg lin-nies jerdaw min fuq it-taxxi taghna.

  4. Boy on a bike says:

Are we tending to forget the past and, in so doing, letting history repeat itself? Just a little bit too late I suppose. I remember it perfectly, same as you, but apparently others don’t. Thanks for the reminder, maybe others will now remember.

  5. Wilson says:

And the consequences are here to this day. And subtly being revived.

  6. TROY says:

And this is why he should rot in hell.

  7. Carmelo Micallef says:

Mintoff was a Maltese fascist – a large section of our society are fiercely Mintoffian to this day including the current regime

  8. Harry Purdie says:

It’s amazing that the world knew that this man was nothing but an evil piece of work, however, the rock gives him a state funeral on the occasion of his welcome death.

  9. Joe pace says:

Amateurs at work or how to destroy all that was done in 25 years in the shortest time possible.

Only a few weeks ago we all heard Dr. Muscat, then leader of the opposition, promising everyone that his government would follow in the PN footsteps and build a new school every year.

Today the minister of education announces that what his leader promised a few weeks ago was all hot air. There is not enough money for new schools.

Whose in charge Evarist Bartolo or Dr. Joseph Muscat, who promised a few weeks ago to keep to the school for tomorrow programme to build a new school every year.

Maybe Dr. Muscat thought squandering one hundred million euros more on salaries for his chosen inner circle more important then our children’s education. This is very similar to 1996 when Labour promised not to touch the student’s stipends, and then the same Evarist Bartolo tells the students that the stipends are only a loan.

Evarist Bartolo made Dr. Sant look an idiot then, and now he’s making you Dr. Muscat look a complete idiot, after all the promises you made just a few weeks ago before the election.

And please don’t speak about there being no money, because you found the money to dish out to that load of amateurs you promoted to your cabinet.

  10. AE says:

This cable says so much. So to all the Mintoffjani out there who slam anything that doesn’t praise Mintoff as Nationalist propoganda, are you going to say the American embassy were in the pocket of the Nationalists too?

Here is a truly objective account of the realities of the day. And history looks set to repeat itself.

  11. Maria Xriha says:

On a related note: F. Fillon : “François Hollande, c’est la politique du chien crevé au fil de l’eau.”

    This after 11 months.

The recent appointments with Airmalta should come as no surprise. Joe Gasan’s niece has been helping Michelle with her wardrobe, married into the family said to be after the “out of stocks medicines etc.” Is this Louis’ group? Straight into Louis’ territory?

In fact many things should come as no surprise, since the NP’s leadership was seen as indecisive and lacking class style, or recognition, and wasn’t that of certain families who were ignored even by Mintoff. Family histories have been ignored, for far too long, by NP analysts, advisors and politicians alike. It was rich for the picking.

Let’s hope that ears are pricking. No use saying trust has to be earned when the opposing tactics have foundations that were long since laid. The offensive has to be more forceful. No more nice guy speak. Actions are what will speak. Determine what will speak loudest. My choice would be an investigative press that links to all of these sectors. Useless not knowing family backgrounds and connections of all sorts. No use putting another non-entity to that sort of job.

Determine whose voice, known to be linked in the past to Norman Lowell private parties is still silent and hasn’t been publicly rewarded.

Interesting nonetheless that JM didn’t give the Airmalta placements to the John Bencini type. There are sectors that can’t afford to fail.

We’ll see what the picture is 11 months down the line.
