Malta becomes even more meritocratic: chairmanship of MTA goes to failed Labour candidate/former Labour minister

The failed Labour electoral candidate Gavin Gulia, who was a minister in Alfred Sant’s cabinet (1996-1998), has been made chairman of the Malta Tourism Authority.

This post has always gone to somebody from the private sector, and not to a politician. The previous incumbents are John C. Grech (EMCS Group), Chris Grech (Axis, Grech & Co), Sam Mifsud (SMS), Louis Farrugia (Farsons), Romwald Lungaro-Mifsud (Corinthia Group), and Ray Fenech (Tumas Group) – have I left anyone out?

The headline in The Times is misleading: “two former Nationalist MPs on board”. Some directors of the Malta Tourism Authority board are ex officio and, while being formally nominated by the Minister, are actually chosen by the organisations, associations or groups of associations that they represent – such as Philip Saunders (Air Malta), someone from Malta International Airport and George Hyzler.

The problem with these Labour appointments is not that they are handed out to persons who are competent and are also Labour, but they are handed out to persons because they ARE Labour. And they are the ones in the inner circles of Labour.

Labour supporters who are not part of the inner circles are clearly excluded. So much for Joseph Muscat’s meritocracy.

I think Joe Galea Debono was chairman before he was appointed to the bench.

    • Observer says:

No. Dr Galea Debono was, at one time, legal advisor to the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association. If I remember correctly, that was sometime between the late 1980s and early 1990s.

      • john says:

You will find, Observer, that Galea Debono was appointed chairman of the NTOM (now the MTA) in 1995, and held the post till 1999.

Can someone declare this government null?

The problem is not finding jobs for Laburisti, it’s finding more Laburisti to fill jobs. They had to call two of them back to Super One.

Malta has been turned into an Alcatraz; a Laburist here, there, everywhere, above of you, underneath you, to the right, to the left, in front of you and at the back of you.

Ma jmurx jahrabilhom il-Gvern minn taht idejhom.

Let them go through their novitiate in governing; perhaps they will be well prepared for the next 5-year term. Hopefully, the switchers would want to give them a second chance.
