Tander doesn’t want us to talk about the flamingo. He thinks we’re being childish.

Alex ‘Tander’ Saliba of Forum Zghazagh Laburisti (where’s his iced bun?), seen here with the new chairman of Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation at an annual Hooped Jumpers Convention, has decided that we are not to talk about the obsessed killing of the lone flamingo which was naive enough to stop in Malta instead of doing as its friends did and going a little further on to Marsala/Trapani (loads of them there last Saturday).

He wants us to speak about the trouble in Syria instead, because this is a considered a suitable topic as it is safely distant from our shores and Joseph Muscat cannot be expected to do anything about the people shooting at other people there, while he is, on the other hand, expected to do a lot about the people shooting at protected flamingoes here in Malta.

And there’s always that little problem in which hunters perceived themselves to be free to do as they please under Labour. Heaven forfend I should suggest that Labour encouraged them in this belief in return for their votes.

Note to Joseph Muscat: tell your boys to stop wearing grey and black hoops. It’s become a Labour mittilkless uniform and just like Big Ponies and Franco Debono, nobody else wants to wear them now (if they ever did). Also, they look ridiculous massed together like that – certainly not a fashionable soiree for the high society.

The minister of lap-dancing birds should release those he has caged, and replace them with the flamingo-killing-fuckers.

The cage should ideally be placed outside the main door of the ministry, pour encourager les autres.

They should wear pink and let the hunters decide their fate.

I have read on some blogs and even news articles about ‘good hunters’ and ‘bad hunters’, apparently the good ones being the ones who do not shoot down protected birds. In my books there is only one type, and they are all bad. Killing an innocent creature is inhumane, and there should be no room for hunters – period. Hunting should be abolished and a minimum prison sentence should be set in place at whoever breaks the law. There was a petition to start a divorce referendum and that succeeded in introducing divorce in Malta. A petition should be started for an anti hunting referendum. The citizens should all vote on this, and if anybody says that its unfair on the hunters, as they are in a minority as in proportion to non hunters, well so were the separated couples against the happy married ones, only this time its in vice versa. This issue affects all citizens.

  5. Joe says:

Just came on this petition against hunting and trapping in Malta. Don’t know anything about this organisation, but will appreciate feedback. I have signed up anyway.

  6. Francis Saliba M.D. says:

Preventing the illegal slaughter of migrating birds by a recently installed LP government with a decent majority and without inside traitors to hamstring it, is a perfectly feasible measure acceptable to the host of Maltese who are disgusted by this senseless slaughter. This same government would be forgiven if, in the numerous company of much more powerful nations, it failed to solve the Syrian internal troubles.

  7. Roberto says:

This seems to be a staple “argument” of the hunting lobby in Malta – just change the subject.

Well, they are too thick to see that it is avoiding an argument rather than countering one. Do you remember when (admittedly sometimes annoying) foreigners used to write in to The Times complaining about hunting in Malta?

Someone would always reply “but what about abortion in your country?! ” So basically, if you are from a country that has abortion – almost every country in the developed world – just shut up.

[Daphne – That’s exactly the defensive method the prime minister uses in debate. Or hadn’t you noticed?]

What a bunch of ol’ hoopers.

On another topic. Clever Minister Mallia has just given prisoners partial amnesty.

In one fell swoop he has gained more voters and more clients earlier than was forecast.

Can someone please explain to me what is going on?

The justice minister shaking the hands of prisoners and even hugging them!

I hope we have some international observers.

“Dr Mallia, a former criminal defence lawyer, was given an enthusiastic welcome by some 500 prisoners gathered in the prison yard. Many shouted ‘Taghna lkoll’ as they applauded.”

Isn’t that sweet? They gave him an enthusiastic welcome.

    Mur obsor, hej.

How many of those 500 had him as their defence lawyer before he became minister?

Maybe we should talk about bed rooms instead.

Some prisoners are more equal than others . Paedophiles won’t get ten minutes while a drug lord can take three months. So it was true that Labour promised an amnesty to prisoners before the election.

To be fair, there should be more talk about Syria too, as people are dying there every day thanks to an oppressive governement, extremists and the fragiity of the state.

But never should such discussions be used merely to distract us from our own version of barbarity at home, it’s an insult to both us and the Syrians.
