How totally NAFF – he’s the PRIME MINISTER, for heaven’s sake. No other qualifications are necessary.
This is how the prime minister is being described, consistently, in the Government Gazette.
IT is notified for general information that the Hon. Joseph Muscat, K.U.O.M., B.Com., B.A. (Hons.), M.A. (European Studies), Ph.D. (Bristol), M.P., resumed duties as Prime Minister on Monday, 15th July, 2013 and that the arrangements made by Government Notice No. 629 of the 15th July, 2013, ceased to have effect accordingly.
Who are these people, and more to the point, who are the people who inflicted them on us?
What about that ‘European Studies’ in brackets, eh? Or the listing of his first and second degrees when you should only list your doctorate (it being assumed that you had to get a first and second degree to get your third), and when you are the prime minister, you shouldn’t list your degrees at all?
They all do it, but he’s the worst. (European Studies) indeed. Pathetic.

Simplification of titles are needed here. What a waste of time paper and ink. Extra added bureaucracy in simple times.
So much for cutting bureaucracy by 25%.
He could have gone the whole hog and listed his form 2c results too. But, on second thoughts, those would not have been as good as ‘you-know-who’s.’

I am just curious. What is K.U.O.M. Is it some knighthood? Or U.O.M. for University of Malta?

Forgot to mention that the honour is automatic on becoming Prime Minister, so is really nothing special for him to have
“Kumpann tal-Unur tal-Ordni tal-Mertu.”
The Prime Minister is an ex officio member of the national Order of Merit.
Not that the order means anything in itself, having been awarded to some disgusting specimens.
Mertu? Is that like in “Meritokrozija”?

I’m glad you said it’s typical of Malta, not Labour. The PN government used to do it all the time too. And no one in Malta seems to know the difference between a member of parliament and a member of the cabinet, or when to use ‘Hon.’ or not.
It’s typical of post-(British) colonial societies. It’s one way to distinguish yourself from the common rabble who hold neither power, nor honour. It’s all very embarrassing.
Emmy Bezzina does it all the time on The Times.

Do we even notice if he’s here or not…? Both before and after 15th July each Ministry seems to be cooking its own little ‘froga’…
He shouldn’t flaunt his business degrees like that especially after saying that manufacturing is the future.
He claims to be an economist or, at least, allows the little people to think he is.
He doesn’t have any degrees in economics. His doctorate is in business management and his specialism is in public organisation at a macro level. He has done little economics.
It reminds me of Idi Amin Dada the former president of Uganda, he had many anchroms before and after his name.
Not sure I understood the bit about the brackets.. should one not qualify the area in which the Masters was obtained? Personally I really hate it when people just put down MSc or MA without specifying in what..
Also (and this is NOT referring to Dr, Muscat but is a general comment because I am fed up of bigheads flaunting their Doctorates at every occasion) let us not be too impressed with titles. The quality of a Doctorate does depend a lot on what area one focused. And especially on the University one got it from. There are Doctorates and then there are Doctorates.
Agree 100%. I personally know some people who at the age of 28 have 2 degrees, four Masters and a P.hd. I don’t have a doctorate in Maths, but does that not seem mathematically impossible? On the other hand I know other people who earnt their doctorate at the age of 40 after almost uninterrupted study starting at the age of 22. You can’t tell me that’s fair.
Employers are increasingly ignoring these titles and looking instead at proved competence.
