If John Dalli is truly away for an anti-tobacco conference, then why is his daughter, who controls his business interests, with him?

John Dalli flying out of Malta 1 July 2013

A member of my international worldwide network of spies took this photograph of John Dalli checking in for the flight to Munich at 7.45 this morning.

Oh, never mind, I said to myself – he did say he headed out this morning for an anti-tobacco conference in Sweden. Maybe he flew via Munich.

Then I realised that his daughter is standing right there next to him. Well, it’s hardly his girlfriend, is it. He doesn’t have one. And that’s his daughter’s back view, hair and all.

I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe she drove her father to the airport and instead of dropping him off, parked and went right up to check-in with him, because he’s such an inexperienced traveller.

Then I noticed that there are two cabin bags, not just one, standing between them.

Why would you take your daughter, the judicial representative and signatory of ‘your’ companies, to an anti-tobacco conference in Sweden?

For company, I suppose. Maybe his wife hates planes.

Manwel Mallia must be breathing a sigh of relief.

I would rather live in a hut than inherit such a complicated business empire from my father.

We shall soon be presented again with more fraudulent medical certificates, I guess.

    Where’s Joseph?

Oh Daphne, you and your international network of spies, or whatever, are fantastic!

  7. Mister says:

Some things have to be done in person, like opening and closing bank accounts.

Checked all over the internet for references to this anti-smoking conference in Sweden in July 2013. Couldn’t find any link.

Maybe the new Minister for Health can send in a link with details?

    • P Shaw says:

If there is such a conference, then I would assume that the Sweedish minister of health (or equivalent) should be present. His/her presence at such a health-related conference would be logical.

The Maltese press should ring somebody in Sweeden to check the facts, unless they are banned by those editors close to Muscat and Dalli.

      • Cittadin Malti says:

The press should ask Godfrey Farrugia. Such conference must be sign-posted on his roadmap.

Daphne – I need to get some work done please. This is all too distracting.

Did he pee on the floor?

  11. La Redoute says:

Where exactly is this anti-tobacco conference taking place? What is John Dalli’s role there? Is he representing Malta’s government as the executive in charge of reforming Mater Dei?

And where the hell is Joseph Muscat?

    • GorgBorg says:

The prime minister is hiding. God knows he must be freaking out at Castille with Manwel Mallia and his staff doing whatever they want and Johnny Cash inventing all these stories.

At least he can console himself by looking out of his office window at the huge LNG regasification vessel sitting in Grand Harbour.

  12. kram says:

Maybe he’s escaping from having to face the media face to face following the Int Herald Tribune report, and as someone else said wait for the medical certificates.

  13. George says:

The Scandinavian countries take their holidays in July, not August. Many start in June. Conferences there at this time of year? I suppose anything is possible. But…

  14. Rosa Luxemburg says:

Apologies for being off topic, but have a look at this (http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20130701/local/offshore-lng-regassification-terminal-towed-into-grand-harbour.476191) wonderful specimen of 21st century technology currently being towed into Grand Harbour, ‘towering over the bastions’ as the TOM aptly put it. In a year or two we’ll have one of these permanently moored outside Marsaxlokk for our eternal edification.

The Dali mentality: messing about with tens of millions in suspect circumstances, then saying mass.

That is Southern European morality of the Spanish Inquisition version of Roman Catholicism, so favoured by mafiosi and Latin American Fascists.

  16. Natalie says:

Now I expect Maltese journalists to ring up their counterparts in Sweden and inquire about any ongoing anti-tobacco conference.

They’ve already had their work done for them by the International Herald Tribune, now they need to wake up and do some proper investigative journalism.

    • La Redoute says:

They could call Dalli again and ask him for the specifics of this anti-tobacco conference, where it’s taking place, who’s organising it, where he’s staying and who’s paying his hotel bill, whether he’s a paid up participant and who paid his fee, whether he was invited or invited himself, what he’s going to say in his address to the conference, why he’s flying through Munich, whether he flew in economy or in business class and who paid for his ticket, whether he will limit himself to making his address or plans to hold meetings while he’s there, whether he has any meetings set up or expects to set up any meetings, and with whom, where and when.

But, no. What we get is a comment on the fly that lets everyone run away with the idea that Dalli went to the Bahamas on some charitable mission to rescue the poor of Africa

      • Cittadin Malti says:

Does the former Commissioner really want us to believe that anyone in Sweden – home of Swedish Match, that Swedish company which wants to sell its products in the EU, but which, according to Dalli, he stopped from doing so – would invite John Dalli to address an anti-smoking conference anywhere in Sweden?

  17. tina says:

What is the PN waiting for to disassociate itself from John Dalli?

  18. Zuza says:

Dr. Karm Mifsud Bonnici on 101, said he was told that the “police waiters” had to to the washing up after the dinner. They returned home at 02:00.
To this is the police corps reduced.

  24. Gahan says:

Which hat is he wearing for this “anti-tobacco conference”?

Shouldn’t he be busy with the much needed reform of the Mater Dei Hospital?

What are his “hours of work” and salary for this consultancy?

I just want to say THANK YOU DAPHNE.
