Outside the European Union or inside it, we would still have had to observe the judgements of the European Court of Human Rights

I am sick to the eye-teeth of the ignorant masses (of all socio-educational backgrounds) cluttering up the internet and social media with their failure to understand that the European Court of Human Rights has NOTHING to do with the European Union.

Whether Malta is a member of the European Union or not, it would still have to abide by the judgements of the ECHR because it is a signatory to the Council of Europe’s Convention for the Protection of Human Rights.

Why, do these people imagine, is Turkey – for instance – sued in the ECHR? Because it’s an EU member state and we never noticed?

And now a side-note to politicians and TV panel guests: refoulement is a French term. Please, do not pronounce it as ‘ree-fowl-mentt’.

To be fair this is a common mistake which not only the Maltese make. I am always amused by the Eurosceptics’ automatic response to rulings of the ECHR on the Daily Mail – generally it’s a call to the Goverment to leave the EU right away, even though leaving the EU would not affect their membership of the ECHR. There is always some lone voice trying to clarify the issue but nobody pays attention. Facts needn’t come in the way of EU bashing after all.

Karl Stagno Navarra on Net TV just said that both PL and PN both wanted to push back. But only Joseph Muscat had the courage to do it.

“Courage?!” He really did lose his marbles!

He was just bluffing to appease the ones that voted for him.

To me it all seemed like a stage managed bit of bad acting.

I sadly suspect that in the long run Malta is “cooked” or “done for” as they say, with these amateur and self serving politicians who no longer have the real interests of the Maltese people at heart .

    Well said, Daphne.

However, do you think that this irrational, Mintoffian-raised, piece of excrement, now PM, will respect any rules, even ECHR edicts?

The boy is out of control. Watch and wait. Self-implosion cometh.

Outside the European Union or inside it we would still need to deal with illegal immigration, if we were out, nobody could care less about JM’s coffee.

Muscat is making too many blunders. A lot of his problems are self-inflicted as he promised everything to everyone.

He must feel the weight of his job.

He surrounded himself my Super One people who are not qualified to work at Castlle. Here is a good one- Nobody with gravitas is there to stand up to Muscat.

Not only. The prohibitory injunction could have equally been issued by a Maltese court basing itself on the Refugees Act (passed unanimously by the Maltese Parliament in 2001).

    Tal-biki.

What Muscat has also managed to create is a great divide in the country. He has fomented hatred and got people to bash each other about depending on which side they are on (racist or anti-racist this time).

PN managed to quell this sentiment of spite and hatred towards each other. And wham…in four months the rabid monster is back.

We’re back to the Mintoffian era. People fighting on buses (not only in that video example doing the rounds), people fighting in queues, people fighting on the internet.

And I’m using the word fighting deliberately as opposed to arguing, since the energy and the sentiment is the same or closer.

Yes the issue is an extremely serious one, so people feel the need to talk about it….but the way it has been so heavily politicized (“all because of the EU” crap) and laced with venomous rhetoric is terrible.

With the decision taken by the ECHR, following the irresponsible decision taken by Joseph Muscat and his Government , it is evident that illegal immigrants will tend more to come over to Malta, as now they are 100% sure that the Maltese Government has no power and authority to send them back.
