Re their meeting last Saturday at the Hotel Excelsior, with Mrs Mallia and the children there too: Sandro Chetcuti is the Police Minister’s client
The Malta Independent, 6 May 2010
Sandro Chetcuti, who is accused of the attempted murder of GRTU (General Retailers and Traders Union) Director General Vince Farrugia, had his bail conditions eased off yesterday to allow him to travel for work purposes.
A court presided by Magistrate Edwina Grima, heard how Mr Chetcuti needs permission to travel abroad for work. Mr Chetcuti’s lawyers, Edward Gatt, Arthur Azzopardi and Manuel Mallia requested that his bail conditions are changed. The magistrate allowed him to travel within Europe only but denied him to stay out between midnight and 6am.
On the request for travelling permission, Dr Gatt, said that it is impossible that Mr Chetcuti flees Malta because his family and his assets are based in Malta.
The court agreed with this point but insisted that the accused should inform the prosecution with his travel itinerary and has to be in Malta when his hearings are due.
Mr Chetcuti, 38 from Marsaskala was arraigned on 11 March after he beat Mr Farrugia at the GRTU’s headquarters in Valletta

If Sandro is being asked to find some way to cover up for Dr.Mallia’s cash than it will be Sandro’s turn to give proof from where he had withdrawn the money to pay for Mallia’s property which is not registered as a sale.
Hawn tidher xi tahwida bejn dawn it-tnejn? Sew il Ministru Mallia kif ukoll Sandro Chetcuti ma ghandiex fiducja fijhom. Inhares lejhom u wicchom jghidli li huma brikkuni. Fl-ahhar jizolqu wahda sewwa.
So we now need to know whether the minster for police is advising Sandro Chetcuti, seeing that he is not meant to have any clients at all.
U iva we tweak the code of ethics a bit! This is a government which not only does not have a road map, but more importantly, it does not have any principles.
Disgusting.
Is the role of the press in Malta to regurgitate government press releases or to give a service to the public by asking the prime minister some pertinent questions?
This is required since the prime minister’s ministers seem to not know which actions are on and which are not.
Did I understand correctly? Is Manuel Mallia still Chetcuti’s lawyer? Is it THE Manuel Mallia? Is this another waiver we do not know about?
And they ranted on about the Nationalist government being corrupt! What happened to the reporters who hounded Dr. Gonzi about Austin Gatt? Are they not capable of doing the same now that Malta is Taghna lkoll and question Dr. Muscat about his ministers?
I always remain impressed by how naive our courts and judges can be:
a) “The magistrate allowed him to travel within Europe only but denied him to stay out between midnight and 6am.” How exactly is the court going to ascertain this?
b) “On the request for travelling permission, Dr Gatt, said that it is impossible that Mr Chetcuti flees Malta because his family and his assets are based in Malta.” Impossible? First of all it could very well be that only a small part of his assets are in Malta, Secondly his family could easily travel and nobody could stop them because they are innocent and thirdly i cannot understand the reasoning if there is enough evidence to have imposed these conditions then these should only be eased if and when there is enough proof to the contrary. And finally when faced with either imprisonment or the ferrari many would quickly choose freedom so assets have very little value in themselves however valuable they might seem.
c) “The court agreed with this point but insisted that the accused should inform the prosecution with his travel itinerary and has to be in Malta when his hearings are due.” What use is this? I can supply an itinerary and have a second one up my sleeve. All it takes is a flight to a rogue country.
