Swedish MEP Christian Engstrom blogs:

Corrupt ex-Commissioner John Dalli in Almedalen

I will be going to a seminar in Almedalen at 10.00, where the corrupt former Commissioner John Dalli will try to convince the audience about his virgin-white innocence.

Dalli resigned as EU Commissioner when it was discovered that through an agent, the restaurant owner Silvio Zammit, he attempted to get Swedish Match to pay him a bribe of half a billion dollars for him to suggest that snus will be sold throughout Europe.

Swedish Match refused to pay and reported the bribery attempt instead, which led to the EU’s anti-corruption unit,OLAF, conducting an investigation. This led to Mr Dalli’s firing from the EU Commission.

……….

I have previously blogged a summary of the evidence against Dalli here.

In my opinion the evidence is more than sufficient for Dalli to be fired as commissioner.

Dalli is a corrupt politician who got caught.

It will be very nice to hear how he will try to deny it.

This is getting even more intriguing and seriously damaging for the country’s reputation.

I cannot understand for the life of me how someone accused with fraud at this level can retain any public position at this stage. Utterly shameful.

You see! Dalli wasn’t lying about the conference… There is one then. Lets just hope he returns to Malta when it ends, maybe via Cayman Islands this time.

‘half a billion’? That’s a bit of an exaggeration. Or is there more coming up?

Did a google translate on some comments and here is how it’s perceived form swedish blogger (3rd comment in christianengstrom blog):

    Original post:
Det startades en förundersökning mot honom, som enligt reglerna skall ske i hans hemland Malta.
Men då blev ju stackars Dalli sjuk — och kunde inte delta i förhör, eller ens komma hem till still kära Malta…

    Full translated post:
It launched a criminal investigation against him, which according to the rules shall be in his home country of Malta.
But then it became the poor Dalli sick – and could not attend the hearing, or even come home to still dear Malta.

But when his party won the election almost a year later, it became Dalli so happy so happy that recovered on the bounce!
He became minister indeed. And the investigation – yes preliminary investigation was obviously
incompetent and bribed by those who want Dalli bad. So he was fired yes. And the new guy at that position
felt a kick-ass guy Dalli … no he can not have done anything wrong, and closed down the investigation.

Snipp snapp cop and so did the story a happy ending!

    (No I’m not kidding!)
    ==end of translation==

Indeed the first 100 days of this new administration made our country the laughing stock of the EU. Now this could easily have repercussions on foreign investment seeing how incapable we are to trial a serious case of corruption in a professional manner.
