The government’s new propaganda poster: clearly, Malta is the new Lebanon

A new Lebanon, however, where ‘everyone’ is a couple in early middle age.

Naħseb aħjar ikabbru ftit moħħhom għax lanqas jafu jispellu – kullħadd suppost li tiġi spelluta kulħadd.
Dak ghax kulma kellhom f’mohhom kien il-hmieg ta’ gazzetta li johorgu huma – ‘Il-Kullhadd’.
There is a spelling mistake on that poster – it should be “kulhadd” with one “L”.
“Kullhadd” is how they spell their Labour newspaper.
Super One has really taken over the country.
Is it an intentional error though? LP advertising paid for by Government?
“Economic growth” newly redefined.
The man in this poster was surely not affected by this ‘economic growth’, since he could not even afford to buy shaving foam and a blade.
All advertising agencies in Malta seem to be obsessed with beards or dirty shave. Most ads, including ads for suits, include men with scruffy beards or dirty shave. They must think it’s cool.
Beards/dirty shave and suits do not blend very well. This type of ad is very common in North Africa and the Gulf states.
Unemployment is rising and the minister responsible seems to have given up hope.

Part of that message is grammatically wrong: we write KULHADD and not KULLHADD in Maltese.
[Daphne – The Labour Party’s official organ is called KullHadd (every Sunday), hence the mistake, I imagine.]

I normally follow your blog with interest and I must say you normally speak clearly.
However I cannot understand why you are comparing this advert to Lebanon’s public relations or something in that sort.

That couple in the government’s new public relations picture look straight from central casting for the new moneyed and over-groomed middle-class in Beirut. I find it ironic because I have long said that this is exactly the ‘measuring rule’ for Malta’s new mittikless: money, branded accoutrements, acquisition, a distinctly non-European style of dressing, talking, thinking and behaving, and clearly non-European values (by which I don’t mean anything to do with morality). ]
What’s wrong with Lebanon?
[Daphne – Nothing, but it has a social culture split between a European-influenced minority and a Middle-Eastern-influenced majority, and that is what is happening to Malta.]
