This is one of the “threatening” emails which Bahamas landlord Barry Connor sent to John Dalli’s daughter: he’s chasing the rent they failed to pay on the Bahamas villa they rented FOR A WHOLE YEAR.

Dalli and Muscat

John Dalli has said that Bahamas landlord Barry Connor, who spoke to The New York Times about the Dallis’ having rented his villa there, sent “threatening emails” to his daughter Claire Gauci Borda.

He gave the impression that he began threatening her after she refused to carry out “dubious financial transactions” for him in Malta.

This is one of the ‘threatening’ emails Barry Connor sent to Claire Gauci Borda. Does it really sound threatening to you? All he wants is his rent money under contract, and he’s pretty reasonable about letting it go if he finds another tenant.

The dates are fascinating, and complicate matters somewhat. It turns out that Claire Gauci Borda did not rent that villa in the Bahamas for the summer of last year, but for a whole year, July 2012 to this month, July 2013.

What this in all likelihood means is that Claire Gauci Borda (who holds her father’s business interests) has sought and might even have obtained residency status in the Bahamas for tax purposes.

In the Bahamas, all that is required to apply for residency for tax purposes is to rent – no need to buy – a residence. You are not required to live in it or even to spend X amount of time there. You can just rent a place there and live your life elsewhere.

Here’s the email.

Subject: Re: Seaview Beach Bahamas

Dear Ms Claire Gauci Borda,

I have today started to list “Seaview Beach” house for rental with all Bahamas Real Estate Agents.

Your agreement with me is for 12 months. If you break the agreement as has been advised then this does not mean that you are not liable for the rent until the end of the period.

If I now rent to another and mitigate my loss then you would not be liable.

In July 2012 you paid the first month rental, the last month rental and a security deposit.

I have paid one month’s rental to the Real Estate Agent and will have to pay again if I can rent to another.

You have not paid March 12 to June 12, (you paid the last month June 12 to July 12) this is potentially $24,000.00 (3 months).

If I do not get another renter before July 12 2013 I can claim $24,000.00 from you.

I will make what I think is a fair offer to settle with me ccompletely.

Pay another months rental $8,000.00 within 48 hours and the agreement will be terminated by me with no further action.

I will keep the security deposit for expenses.

If this is not acceptable then as I have explained, the rental is still payable until the end of the agreement unless I find another renter for “Seaview Beach”.

Regards

Barry Connor

He’s a real Socialist – $100 million and then he refuses to pay the rent.

You’re right. First he rents an expensive villa for a year, doesn’t live in it, and then refuses to pay the rent.

This Dalli is some operator. He is bad news wherever he goes. And he has the gall to tell the media that his enemies are trying to ruin his reputation.

correction- only a buffoon thinks like him.

  5. Basla says:

He rented the place in Bahamas to hide their money there and avoid paying taxes.

  7. La Redoute says:

So the Dallis paid rent at $8000 a month for five months after John Dalli resigned from the EU Commission and then suddenly decided they didn’t need to do that any more.

Didn’t Dalli say that the rent was paid by a company his daughter manages and that it was used for meetings with his (ahem) philanthropic friends? And didn’t he say that the project is still ongoing? So why did they suddenly stop paying rent?

Incidentally, if all the Bahamas meetings were with people from the US, why didn’t they just pay for occasional meetings in a hotel in the US rather than paying rent in the Bahamas for months?

  8. Gahan says:

To cut a long story short, Barry Connor asked for the due rent at the end of February this year, but the Dallis reneged on their contractual agreement and did not oblige.

Connor came to Malta to look for his money. Dalli says he was not in Malta when Connor came here. That’s right, because it was about the time he was sheltering in Brussels with the aid of medical certificates.

When Connor realised that all was lost with the Dallis, he contacted The New York Times.

No need to be a detective: the Dallis were using the permanent address of the rented house for tax-dodging purposes. They don’t have the time or inclination for holidays with all that voluntary work they do.

It could be that the Dallis have another address in the Bahamas now, probably for less rent.

  9. LAQI says:

i fail to see anything threatening in Mr. Connor’s email. He is just looking out for what is his due – like everybody else would have done. But as they say in Maltese – “Il-hmar il makus kul ilma jahsbu mishun”.

    • La Redoute says:

Il- hmar il-makus idur ghalih id-dubbien.

Kelb mismut, kull ilma jahsbu mishun.

But not if you’re John Dalli.

  10. canon says:

Now John Dalli should publish his daughter’s reply to Mr Connor.

  11. where are we? says:

I cannot see any threats in the very well-mannered e-mail.

If Dalli knows what’s good for him he should pay and shut up.

Anyway, I cannot see how Dalli can dirty his name more than he has already done. Of course, he is now a huge millstone round the Labour Party’s neck.

    • La Redoute says:

John Dalli is a huge millstone around everyone’s neck. The sooner we’re shot of him, the better, and I hope he takes his political sponsors with him.

  15. Plotinus says:

So John Dalli has set his privacy settings on Facebook and one is faced with a practically blank screen, but strangely enough he saw fit to leave his photos open to all.

And guess what, all his public photos range from 2006 to 2008 and they are all photos of himself with Nationalist Party supporters, with Lawrence Gonzi etc. What exactly is he trying to prove?

    The plot thickens.

    The whole affair stinks.

If this is a threatening letter then he really is a paranoid schiz.

It does not say much about the Commission and OLAF.

    They were certainly caught napping.

No wonder the entire EU setup is in such a mess.

The Commission is not even able “to look after” its own members.

Now it seems that even his friends are beginning to disassociate themselves:

That said, it could simply be a masquerade.

    • The Bermuda Triangle says:

They may try to disassociate themselves, but the media should dig deeper into those associations.

  20. This question concerning the activities of John Dalli’s and his family,s and former canvasser’s interests, be they financial, unusual travel arrangements, allegations of payments requested for services to be rendered, contradictory statements on what was said or done, and direct accusations, has reached proportions that cannot be ignored, once John Dalli has been entrusted with an important administrative post by the government of Malta.

I have been criticised for not accepting blindly that the Swedish tobacco industry was a victim in the snus bribe issue examined by OLAF, and I still hold that view, without being a defender of anyone else involved.

But the time has come, in the interest of the nation, for Malta’s administration to be completely divorced from any link with the fortunes, or misfortunes, of a single individual who attracts such bad publicity.

Barry Connor is first described by Dalli as a landlord who daily joined in their Aid to Africa group confidential discussions, and next day, we are told that he was a CLIENT of John Dalli’s old company now “owned by his daughter” and a CLIENT who was out for revenge because she refused to facilitate suspect transactions involving Malta.

If I refuse to assist a man who walks off the street in furthering an improper purpose, he is not and never was, my CLIENT. The use of this word suggests a previous history of services to Connor by the Dalli group.

So, when was the daughter alone, or with her father together, in the Bahamas? And what is their excuse for rent as agreed not being paid to Connor?

Has the PN issued a statement on this. It seems that Simon is sitting pretty on the fence. The longer they take the less credible they become.

As far as I know John Dalli is still a member of the PN. Questions should be asked by the leadership to clarify his position and actions, otherwise suspend him from the party.
