Oh I see, Master in creativity and innovation. How does that work?

  2. Osservatore says:

    Vera trid tara biex temmen.

  3. H.P. Baxxter says:

No wonder I do badly at interviews in Malta. I must come across as the butchest thing since Lord Kitchener.

  4. George Grech says:

Il-meritokrazija qisna qed intellghu it-tombla. Tfajna go borza l-ismijiet kollha ta’ kull min taghna daqqa t’id biex nirbhu l-elezzjoni u zidna erba ismijiet fuq ir-rih biex naghtu naqra doza ta’ Malta Taghna Lkoll.

Cekcek cekcek tella t-tombla u ghamilna fatta.

  5. Joe Fenech says:

What on earth is Joseph Chetcuti doing flaunting an LTCL (Licentiate of the Trinity College of Music, equivalent to an A level which he gained through external examination like most people in Malta).

What on earth does Joseph Chetcuti know about cinema and the arts? Not sure how much he knows about the legal profession either which he doesn’t seem to practise.

Chetcuti is just an amateur violin player with a law degree who happens to have a disproportionate sense of self-worth, when he is nothing more than a jelly-baby in hot pants who has chosen Super 1 as his whore-house.

    • Jozef says:

Always was, monthly college mass an opportunity to show off his ‘skills’ on that ruddy thing.

    • M says:

For clarity’s sake grade 8 is equivalent to an A level. Then you do a Recital, ATCL (if with Trinity) then LTCL…it’s equivalent to a BA.

  6. Catherine says:

Ommi ma. If I see anymore of these cheap Leicester online style qualifications and that rubbish masters in creativity and innovation (bit of a tall order there) I will need a sick-bag. Qishom pastizzi.

    • Matthew Sc says:

so catherine – in what exactly are you qualified in?! since you seem very confident in pointing fingers at other (world renowned) universities, i’m pretty sure you can enlighten us all in your qualifications. thanks catherine

[Daphne – What an utterly ridiculous question/statement. You don’t have to be qualified in anything at all to be able to distinguish between different qualifications and the universities which grant them. Yours is such a ‘Joseph Muscat’ response.]

      • Matthew Sc says:

for your info i voted against Joseph Muscat “taghna ilkoll” party, however i’m reading for a doctorate at the university of Leicester and i was quite taken aback by that comment. I dont think its very professional from your end to let people comment against high ranking Universities!

[Daphne – People reading for a doctorate know how to write, punctuate and use capital letters and apostrophes in the appropriate place. They also know how to put their arguments convincingly. If you are on the doctoral programme of any university at all, it is the University of Godforsaken Toenail of the Universe.]

      • Jozef says:

        Catherine’s absolutely right.

Who’s tutoring, what placements, what methodologies, which visiting professors, any extended collaborative programs with industries, if so which…..need I go on?

      • Catherine says:

Well actually since you ask I am reading for a PhD, full time, in situ, at a world renowned university.

And I have a master’s degree, also from a world renowned university. And by world renowned I dont mean that thay pop up in Google ads offering online degrees. Don’t you feel rather silly, now?

      • Catherine says:

@Matthew Sc: “let” people comment? You must be Labour. Get a life.

While I congratulate you on your achievements, please be realistic about what you are doing and understand there are different grades of academia.

The Leicester doctorate allows people on it who have no undergraduate degree. Please.

      • J says:

Distance Learning degrees are better than none at all, but they are seriously problematic. Quality assurance is a massive headache, and it is nigh on impossible to provide students with anything near the intellectual engagement they receive on campus.

Qualifications? I lecture at one of the best UK universities in my field. I have been invited to lecture at several other universities on three continents. My teaching includes distance learning courses. My PhD passed without corrections and was published as a monograph by one of the best (if not the best) publishers in my field.

Pero ma nghidx lit-Times kull darba li nboss, u qed nghidlek ghax milli jidher trid tkun ikkwalifikat biex tkellmek.

      • Catherine says:

Sorry, I must also add this to my qualifications: I won one of the most competitive scholarships in my field, which gives me extended funding to develop a fellowship proposal and publish my research.

I also teach research methodology to undergraduates and have published in peer-reviewed journals.

Mhux biex niftahar, imma biex tara kemm int redikulu gej minghalik int biss qed taghmel xi haga. Very much in the same vein as so many of the people mentioned above.

      • Joe Fenech says:

Catherine, you are very right. People don’t realise that many universities in the UK are commercial crap (and it’s getting worse).

If you don’t go to a top uni, you’re wasting your time.

    • Brian Galea says:

Catherine, I suggest you read this:http://www2.le.ac.uk/study/research/professional

Moreover, the National Vocational Qualification Board, recognises MSc’s and Doctorate Programmes from the University of Leicester as the equivalent of a Level 7 and a Level 8 respectively, the highest two grades one could academically achieve. Suggest you inform yourself before badmouthing others.

      • Catherine says:

So, let me get this straight. You sent me to the Leicester website to show me….that these degrees exist? Thank you very much.

Level 8 and 7 refers to the grade, not the quality. All qualifications are graded in this way. It is not a reflection of quality.

It’s like saying Form 1, Form 2 etc. and as you know all schools have this, irrespective of their quality.

I know these things because I have worked in academia for a while. So, Brian Grech, please inform yourself as YOU do not know what you are talking about.

      • H.P. Baxxter says:

Bollocks. Honestly. Any PhD from any shit-university is classified as level 8 under the national qualification equivalence scheme. Except if it’s from outside the UK or bloody Italy. For Tübingen or Heidelberg, you have to sweat blood.

The levels are not grades. Read a dictionary before sitting down at your keyboard.

Yes, Malta is knee-deep in PhDs from red-brick rubbish universities, in rubbish subjects, and no amount of pride in your Leicester alma mater will change that.

Research, my fluffy arse. I know semi-literates with PhDs who are tenured professors at the University of Malta. One of them can’t even pronounce “Leicester” properly. Does that make them intelligent? Does that f…

      • John says:

        Catherine,

Leicester is amoung the best universities in the UK. Tkomplix idahhaq nies bik.

You certainly don’t know your stuff. Doctorates are research based and require no attendance, unless there’s someone to spoon feed you.

        Ranked 16th overall http://www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/league-tables/rankings

      • Catherine says:

Another Maltese trait in full display: refusing to listen to people who know something about an issue; insistence that the person who disagrees with you does so because they don’t know anything, despite evidence to the contrary.

Being in a research environment is good for intellectual development and engagement, John.

A PhD is research-based not necessarily so a doctorate. There is a difference between the two.

Leicester ranks high in the UK, yes, and my issue is not with this university. My issue is with their distance learning. The two things are not the same.

      • Jennifer says:

Catherine your ignorance is outstanding. If you want to learn you do not even need a University!

Hence your argument of distance vs traditional learning is of zero importance, especially since courses are designed in a way to be identical.

Moreover your word contradicts some of the top accreditation bodies worldwide. I might also add that DL students might offer more to academia since usually they work while studying and practice what they preach, not blabber on for ever without having touched the professional world.

        Prove me wrong please.

    • Brian Galea says:

Catherine, you could be the best academic of the world but your antagonism and pessimism will get you nowhere. As an academic and a professional myself, I would never dare passing such unfounded remarks about a reputable university as that of Leicester. You could do much better.

    • Joe Fenech says:

“If I see anymore of these cheap Leicester online style qualifications and that rubbish masters in creativity and innovation (bit of a tall order there) I will need a sick-bag. ”

You know well that in the UK, higher education is fee-paying…

      • Catherine says:

Cheap as in not as much work, not of the same value, as other PhDs. And with a 50,000 word thesis and tutorials all the way through, I can assure you the “doctorate” (NOT PhD, for a good reason) is “cheap” as its lack of comparable effort results in a less valuable achievement. Honestly, Jesus wept, you take things so literally it’s amazing. Go away now.

  7. Robert says:

Joe Fenech…you are being hard on Joseph Chetcuti, but I share your opinion 100%.

The biggest joke is the current film commissioner – now THAT is a story in itself.

    • Chris says:

Thank you, Robert! Exactly! This is partly why we now have these problems.

The current Film Commissioner was ‘protected’ by the then Minister of Finance and the PM (after the ousting of a sterling Film Commissioner whilst he was a member on the Film Commission board ghax ma’ kinietx tal-qalba) despite heavy protestations from the film industry itself.

Unfortunately we are seeing the same pattern as that established by previous Nationalist ministers. So much for voting for change.

    Dear Daphne

I follow your blog on a regular basis. I do for a number of different reasons and I sincerely believe that your blog is a window to a reality that somehow the majority seems hell-bent to sweep under the carpet. Now given the number of board appointments that have been given out in such an unashamed manner one could easily come to the conclusion that all and sundry are unworthy of such appointments. So let me come forth and declare myself guilty as charged in coming to such conclusions myself on a number of occasions. So today I was quite taken aback when I saw Beverly Cutajar splashed in such a manner on your post. I have known Beverly on a personal and professional level for more years now than I care say. I have to admit that she is a very close friend. What I know is that she is a highly ethical person in whatever she does and her loyalty and commitment when she embarks on a project are unwavering. For the record she is also quite apolitical when it comes to local parties. Now had the research on her been done better one would find that she actually spent years as a regular on NET TV program RED hosted by none other than Peter Busuttil who also happens to be the Malta Film Commissioner, a position which he has held for a substantial number of years now.

As for those photos; well for one thing I do not have a Facebook account and whenever I find out there is a picture of mine uploaded on someone else’s page I politely ask them to remove it. Now you know where I’m coming from when it comes to this Facebook epidemic. So I certainly concur that by uploading certain photos one is only asking for trouble as the chances are that they will come back and haunt you one day especially when taken out of context, which I believe is the case in this post. Yet again these are public domain. I just cannot understand how professionals, especially those who are in direct (personal) contact with their clients, cannot see such pitfalls.

I sincerely want to thank you for uploading this post.

    • Joe Fenech says:

” a window to a reality that somehow the majority seems hell-bent to sweep under the carpet.”

Some of us left Malta decades ago for the same reason.

  9. sammy says:

I have no idea what Joseph Chetcuti can contribute. What a joke. But I believe that Beverly can do a good job. She is very talented. Well, we have to wait and see.

  10. John Zorn says:

PN gave us Pete multi practical Busuttil. PL gave us Beverly, whatever she represents. Even Steven. There are so many professionals out there and they get brushed aside because they don’t do politics, hence we re swimming in these stale waters, red and blue ones. Therefore the popularity of your blog.
