Government by inanity

Malta has created a government in its own image. The predominant demographic in Malta is probably now the “wow sexy pic hon how nice sweet, you goin to Marrakesh tonite” army.

So we have a prime minister and government who fit the mould. A Vodafone employee and a cabinet minister’s son have had a baby. The prime minister tweets his congratulations instead of – at most – giving them a call in private.

The tweet is excruciating. The reply is ridiculous – when you consider that it is a communication to the prime minister.

The Vodafone employee happens to have worked for Super One TV for years. The baby-father’s own father happens to be Karmenu Vella.

But so what. Is this appropriate behaviour? All the business of government has ground to a halt. Sales are drying up throughout the economy. And the prime minister is tweeting news of the birth of Miriam Dalli’s baby.

God bless the precious child. I’m sure Merkel or Rajoy would have done the same plus also uploading a pic of their dinner.

A lot of contractors are voicing concern at the sudden interruption in the issue of tenders. Talk in ministries is wait and see.

Four different incentive schemes previously launched by the housing authority have also been stopped.

Education ministry ditto. No idea what next. Leo Brincat, on the other hand, prefers drama.

Major infrastructure is being ‘revised’ to make it more ‘cost effective’.

The problem seems to be linked to an utter shambles in what had to be handed over. But that’s what happens when perm secs are sent packing within hours of secretariats.

Then there’s the deadlines for EU funds passing us by.

These geezers haven’t yet taken one decision, except for Marsaxlokk and relying solely on projects in progress.

Problem is, trades need an overlap of stages if schedules are to be kept full.

But you have forgotten that we are having a Summer Carnival. How unfair of you to have forgotten this important development.

    Daphne, unfortunately you are right.

So inane are we as a nation that Yana Mintoff insists that “we should take the right road, we should take the socialist road” and hardly anyone bats an eyelid.

If I can put a caption to the grin of Yana Mintoff as appearing in The Malta Independent, it would be the following:”My father screwed you all preaching socialism while he was a multi millionaire bummer and I am following his footsteps. Hu go fik a poplu cuc u injorant. Kunu socjalisti.” Am pretty sure she can say those words in Maltese.

What you say is unfortunately very true. We’ve become a nation of stupid tweeters and FB posters. Considering that during the ‘golden years’ these same people were so averse to new technology (computers and communication) I wonder what went so wrong during these past 25 years.

OK, now we haven’t gone back to the Dark Ages but the use we make of the new gizmos hasn’t taken us farther than the Middle Ages – if that at all!

If the sales are drying up now, after only five months, there should be a downward spiral after the second budget in November 2014 once the timeline set by the EU to address the deficit would be fast approaching.

With the current level of excessive spending on dishing out appointments, expanding the cabinet costs by EUR 6 million a year, and the other unnecessary expenditure on election private promises, the newly introduced cuts in health services will not suffice to make up for the additional expenditure elsewhere.

This government is subtly cutting expenditure in areas that benefit communities collectively (such as the health sector, public recreation areas, maintenance of public, public law and order, and embellishment) in order to make up for the extra expenditure that benefits individuals (appointees, government recruitment, sectorial interests, cut in MEPA fees, hunters, etc). However there are limits to how much expenditure cuts in necessary services can make up for the excessive expenditure elsewhere.

While Malta burns, Joseph tweets. Hope you bloody switchers realise what you have brought on yourselves, your families and innocent others. It is not going to be 22 months this time but five bloody years during which this island will go to the dogs.

A bunch of real hamalli with an attitude to match. Our PM hasn’t taken one decent decision.

He doesn’t know that he is now required to be a statesman, and he is putting us all to shame. What will this country be like in 5 years’ time – an absolute disaster.
