Think before you ‘Like’

My column for today’s The Malta Independent is now up on line. It’s about how you should think before you click ‘Like’ on a relationship photograph that symbolises misery caused to others, who will be hurt more by the names and identity of those ‘Liking’ the picture than by the picture itself. Finally, some sane advice for ‘Facebookies’.
Your posts and articles are always great, but this is one of your best.
This malicious behaviour goes further, believe me. Strictly family occasions such as First Holy Communion and Confirmation and even school plays end up being sources of unnecessary tension when the parent who is in a new relationship insists that he or she will either attend with the new partner or not at all, thus spoiling the occasion for the child.
Sadly the introduction of divorce seems to have legitimized this awful behaviour. Other family members attending such occasions find themselves torn between putting up appearances for the sake of the child or not putting in an appearance at all.
There’s no tearing to be done. If it’s the child’s occasion, then that’s what matters. Personal feelings are secondary.
The saddest and most inappropriate are men Liking women’s change of status of a woman from “in a relationship” to “single”.
Excellent piece…well done!
Unfortunately I had to sometimes “Like” things or people on Facebook just to follow them. Adding a contact to your list does not necessarily mean that you “like” or are friends with the person in question and it would be good if Facebook provided functionality for it.
Take Franco Debono as an example. one might want to add him to see what he’s up to, but “Like” is surely not the right term for it. I do have some trash on my list that I need to keep for now.
[Daphne – I’m talking about clicking Like on very specific photographs, not adding Friends.]
Like very much
