A campaign to have the George Cross removed from the Maltese flag was relaunched today. Might I make a suggestion?

Maltese flag

They’re claiming they want a symbol of the Maltese instead. Well, here it is. It’s either that or a pastizz.

    Dead bird?

  2. francesca says:

Pastizz, please. I can’t bear to see his face for more then 5 years thank you.

  3. vic says:

let us say that a majority of the Maltese want to change the flag and they have their way. in a few years’ time, a different majority will want a new change. so I suggest that on our flag we show the expiry date.

    • Natalie says:

Why are we even giving this sad bunch of people all this publicity? Just let them rot in their ignorance.

On the other hand, if we insist on making this silly proposition an issue, why doesn’t someone ask Joseph Muscat and his MPs what they think of changing the flag? It would show us where we are really headed to.

  4. J.J. says:

And the new national anthem should be “Wot the hack”

  5. Lorry says:

Daphne you left us with no choice here, either a pastizz or a…pastizz perhaps

  6. Smashing man! says:

    Minn tas-serkin

  7. il baks says:

sorry, but i can’t see the difference between the two.

  8. Manuel says:

This morning I posted on the wall of this page asking for the identity of its administrators to be made public so the public can judge on what’s the real agenda behind all this “krucjata”.

In less than an hour, the page was either taken down or else they blocked me because I came very close at revealing their true identity. I am morally convinced that this page was created by a bunch of Malta Taghhom Biss nitwits.

Remember also that this campaign was done during Mintoff’s own time when one could see the Socjalisti flying the Maltese flag without the George Cross.

  9. Manuel says:

And yes, the late Anton Buttigieg had suggested a change in the National Anthem during his speech on Freedom Day on the crap-rock in Birgu.

  10. Volley says:

Hilarious…but honestly Malta doesn’t deserve any better.

  11. Il-Haxu says:

    Pastizz tal-Haxu Tas-Serkin.

  12. Sparky says:

Very fitting! Made my day. Well actually we should have all the faces in this Government on the flag, including wives, partners, children, the lot. Or just write TAGHNA LKOLL.

  13. Herman says:

That or a pastizz? Same difference.

  14. H.P. Baxxter says:

As usual, this muppet chimes in:

    [Referring to the article above]

A step in the right Direction.
One cannot take off the George Cross and leave a bland, Red and White Flag.
Two many similar ones of other Countries.

View the image of the proposed Flag for Malta.
It is bland, weak since it retains the two colours.
    Therefore, no focal point.

Now compare with Our Banner. [The Imperium Europa quasi-Nazi flag]
Striking, forceful, captivating since the Black 8 Pointed Cross impacts the whole Flag.
This will be the Flag of Melita: The Sacred Island – Spiritual Focal Point of the Imperium.”

    • Kif inhi din? says:

      Now isn’t that ironic!

When the Knights of St John were based in Malta, most indigenous Maltese were either scraping a living as farmers or fishermen or were employed doing menial tasks for the Knights and other noble families.

To add another twist to the irony before the British rule migration from Malta was towards North Africa, including Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Morocco, and Egypt.

Sounds like Imperium Europa are interpreting history to suit their delusions of grandeur.

      • Kif inhi din? says:

Perhaps Imperiu0 Europa conveniently overlooked the number of Muslim slaves that the Knights captured through sponsored piracy. Valletta’s construction owes a lot to slavery which was eventually abolished by Napoleon’s brief rule.

      • Natalie says:

Not to mention the fact that most Maltese were miserable under the Knights rule. They would have identified with anything BUT the eight-pointed cross.

      • H.P. Baxxter says:

How would you know? How would anyone? The only surviving contemporary accounts that are not highly-embellished histories are the letters and diaries written by the knights. It turns out it was THEY who were miserable in Malta.

  15. Bob says:

The flag should return to how it was originally White and Red.

The George Cross is a symbol of colonialism. I also find it an insult that an award given to individuals is given to a whole nation.

Malta only received the George Cross because we were occupied by the British and because at that time they want to appease themselves with the civilian population.

    • Marlowe says:

You’re looking at it the wrong way. The fact that it was given collectively to the Maltese people adds rather than detracts. The whole nation demonstrated as much bravery and courage in the face of overwhelming odds as the United Kingdom’s finest heroes.

Since you seem to be so insulted easily, how do you feel towards your Maltese forefathers that requested British occupation to be liberated from French occupation?

    • anthony says:

Bob, you are right, you deserve the flag without the George Cross.

After God only knows how many years at school, at taxpayers’ expense, your written English is atrocious.

      Actually it is painful.

You probably don’t have a clue what the George Cross is.

You would feel more at home with a luzzu or a pala tal-bajtar.

      I agree with you.

    • brian grech says:

The George Cross is a symbol of colonialism? And what about the red and white?

Whichever historical account you believe, weren’t they the colours given to Malta by a colonising power?

So let’s remove the red and white as well then? So what’s left? Nothing. I say that the George Cross is part of our history, let’s preserve it.

    • H.Galea (NRK) says:

Hallina, Bob. Jekk tiftakar xi hmerija ohra, irrakkontahielna wkoll. Tbissima l’hawn u l’hemm qatt ma ghamlet hsara lill-hadd.

Qed niktiblek bil-Malti, ghax jidher car li int daqxejn batut fl-ingliz – dak l-ilsien tal-pepè – mid-dehra m’intix socju, l-importanti li int Bob … mhux hekk..

    • ciccio says:

Bob, anke jien se niktiblek bil-Malti. L-Ingliz ma ghandekx tuzah, ghax dak hallewhulna l-kolonjalisti.

U l-belt Valletta ghandna inhottuha, ghax dik bniha il-“barrani.”

Dawn il-kampanji fuq, fost l-ohrajn, il-bieb tal-belt, il-progett ta’ Piano, il-George Cross, huma biss kampanji ta’ min ma ghandu xejn x’jaghmel, jew jrid biss jaghmel il-hsara u jahli l-hin ta’ haddiehor u tal-pajjiz.

  16. Min Jaf says:

What is being overlooked here is that the Maltese flag in its current form, displaying the George Cross, was approved twice by the Maltese, initially in the ‘independence’ referendum in the early 1960s and again by an overwhelming majority in Parliament spanning both sides of the House in the Mintoff ‘republic’ amendments to the 1964 Constitution.

The George Cross was not imposed on the flag by the British, but was put there by choice by the Maltese.

The George Cross is an internationally recognized award for bravery. It is an integral part of our national identity that must not be suppressed, much less so erased.

  17. anthony says:

    There is another option.

A pic of the Kanzlerin’s hallmark hand gesture, the Raute.

  18. Tracy says:

Jew dghajsa, bajtar tax-xewk, xemx u bahar

  19. maria says:

Le ta please, Daphne……not the smirking idiot on our flag. Better a pastizz, but not him.

  20. BRONKA says:

For me there is no difference. They are both pastizzi.

  21. Mark says:

    You’re cyber-harassing the Dear Leader.

  22. verita says:

He’s our Maltese cross after all.

  23. Kif inhi din? says:

The George Cross symbolises subservience to the Crown; most of the brave people to whom it was awarded have sadly passed away.

  24. fido says:

The white and red flag in the nautical environment stands for the letter H. ‘H’ – as in Hotel or if your “pastizz” (who ever or what ever that might be) is included ‘H’ might stand for ‘H_R_’.

  25. Joe Fenech says:

I suggest that they add a pair of baubles under his head.

  26. Alf says:

Is Mrs Norman Hamilton’s brother, Norman Grech, behind this campaign?

  27. albona says:

When you say ‘it’s either ”that” or a pastizz’ which symbol are you referring to?

  28. zaren says:

    Il-poplu jieħu dak li jixraqlu…………

  29. lilian says:

Why don’t we have a slogan instead of a symbol? Malta tal-Labour biss.

  30. Dorianne says:

If you want a pastizz put a picture of Simon ……. @ francesca just Keep Calm cos you have years looking at our Prime Minister

  31. C Falzon says:

In this age of cost-cutting we should opt for a previously-owned flag, preferably one available in large quantities.

There is a beautiful one in bright red with some yellow tools depicted in the corner. It would also look good next to the the Chinese flag on our public buildings.

There are also some plain green ones available at next to nothing but I don’t think the colour matches well with our gebla tal-franka.

  32. H.P. Baxxter says:

Meanwhile, back at the funny farm:

Muscat meets Russian Foreign Minister, adoptions among subject for further talks

    [Lowell says:]

    “Very good!

And let us adopt only Europids, preferably non Latins – so as to improve our Racial Stock.
And let us stop the insanity of African adoptions – a dysgenic disaster.
And let Racial Health: Eugenics become a top priority – and discard Christian Cretinism.
