The first day of the open season, and it’s hell already
It’s 20 minutes to one and they’re still blasting them out of the sky with shots ringing out repeatedly in Bidnija valley. It’s the first day of the open season (1 September) and they’ve been at it since before dawn.
They have to stop at 1pm because it’s Sunday. On weekdays they’re now allowed to shoot until 7pm.
There is no end in sight to this impossible situation.
And the ambjentalisti and faux-liberals voted Labour because they thought it progressive and European.
The temptation to go out and yell at the shooters is almost overwhelming – not because of the sound of gun-shots, to which I am by now accustomed, but because of their sheer, bloody-minded awful stupidity. What exactly is the point of it all? Having fun by destroying things and spoiling other people’s pleasure.
Once the shooting begins, we don’t even hear the ordinary birds which are all over the house and garden anymore. They know better than to open their beaks.

You do know there is a shooting range in Bidnija, don’t you?
[Daphne – I have lived here since I was 26. Therefore it follows that I am able to tell when somebody is shooting in a valley directly beneath my house and when somebody is shooting at the range which is a couple of kilometres away, on the other side of a hill, overlooking another valley altogether (Wardija) and completely out of the sound-range of my home. It also follows that I am able to distinguish between the sporadic shots of hunters and the regularly timed volleys of range-shooting. Thank you, and goodbye.]
RS, it seems that Daphne is faster at the draw than you are.
Dear RS
I myself am very familiar with Bidinija and its surroundings – including the valleys to the east and nort-east of the hamlet and the one towards Wardija on the opposite side.
May I encourage you to be a little more knowledgeable about the Maltese countryside before penning your comments.
Join a shooting club, buy a gun, and start practising on the ‘sporting’ hunters. That way the “sportsmen” would be practising their sport on a fair and level playing field.
That was my pipe dream.
Do you, Gahan, mean “kacca ghall-kaccaturi?
Now’s the right time for Kenneth and Astrid to have a session (of painting, of course) en plein air.
mind your own business daphne..
[Daphne – It IS my business. I live here, the shooting disturbs my environment, and the birds are not other people’s to shoot.]
EHMM … I agree on their stupidity, I agree that they’re egosistic and all that and I wish they would just put an end to it once and for all, but you really cannot blame the ambjentalisti for voting Labour .. they had been voting PN for 25 years and never got anywhere …
[Daphne – People should always be blamed for their decisions. One votes on the basis of the available evidence, and one must look for that evidence and not rely on what one is told in propaganda. Any environmentalist who voted for land reclamation, more encouragement for bird-shooters, the effective dismantling of controls at the Planning Authority, and worse, is either just plain stupid or not an environmentalist. And you are neither a ‘Daphne lover’ nor an environmentalist or even an independent observer because the false email you have given is ‘daphne-liba@yahoo.com’. That’s an example of what I mean by analysing the available evidence for the real information.]
Only an idiot would not vote for a “bad government” (on the hunting issue) knowing that voting for the other party would get him a far worse government (even on the hunting issue).
Furthermore, it takes a mindless egoistic retard to vote for a party on the basis of a single issue that is not even the most important one.
