Marisa Micallef’s first act as ambassador to Washington is to cancel the Independence Day reception because she has to meet ‘Joseph’
Members of my international worldwide network of spies in Washington have received their first email from the new Maltese ambassador. it informs that the usual embassy reception to mark Independence Day has been cancelled, because the Maltese PM will be in America and she has to meet him.
That’s a ridiculous excuse, because surely if the prime minister is going to be in the United States that week, then he should be AT the reception in Washington, rather than the ambassador cancelling the reception so that she can meet him in Manhattan.
And if he doesn’t feel like making the terribly taxing journey from New York to Washington to honour Independence Day at the embassy there, then the thing to do would have been to hold an alternative Independence Day reception at a venue in Manhattan to accommodate these two extremely lazy individuals, which would also have had the added benefit of delighting the many Maltese who live there.
But that’s not what it’s about, is it.
Still, I shall have to find some excuse to be in Washington on Republic Day or Jum il-Helsien, and go to the ‘resepxin’ as somebody’s date just for the sheer pleasure of watching that insufferably pretentious snob flop about on the underbelly of Mintoffianism.
Sic transit gloria mundi, Marisa. Say hello to the chavs.

Ms Micallef’s email to the Maltese in Washington:
Dear Maltese friends,
I am writing to let you know our Prime Minister Dr. Joseph Muscat will be atending and speaking at the UN in the week of our national day on 21st September, 2013.
The PM will also be meeting the Maltese and Gozitan community in New York that week and will also be visiting Canada.
As I have been invited to attend, we will postpone the national day celebrations to another national day.
I very much look forward to meeting you all in the coming months.
Best regards,
Marisa Micallef
Ambassador

Did the email also include the ‘atending’ typo?
[Daphne – Yes.]
A typo is acceptable compared to EB’s “bums on seats”. See
http://www.independent.com.mt/articles/2013-09-06/news/english-language-travel-not-just-about-bums-on-seats-evarist-bartolo-2518646785/
The typo pales into insignificance compared to the poor English used by, erm, Her Eminence.
The nuns at the Convent of the Sacred Heart must be so proud.
When you’re 55, you can’t still be blaming your school for your poor writing and limited vocabulary.
The fault is entirely hers.
“we will postpone the national day celebrations to another national day”.
This feels something right out of Mad Magazine or out of the two Ronnies or Fawlty Towers.
I can’t decide which, but in the meantime, I’m shaking my head in disbelief.
We really have a great ambassador in Washington. (That was irony, Marisa).
They sure are having a ball at the Maltese taxpayers’ expense. Is Mrs. Prime Minister and kids accompanying him too besides a large entourage. Mrs. Muscat did say they are going to make the most of their five years in government. Free jet-setting all over the world.
[Daphne – Free flying, but hardly the jet set.]
What’s that in the corner of her pic? It looks like a confederate flag at an angle.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norway
Yes, why does the (Facebook?) photo of the Maltese ambassador to Washington sport a Norwegian flag, pray tell?
It does resemble the Confederate flag but it resembles also the Norwegian one.
It’s the flag of Norway. What on earth is it doing on the Maltese ambassador’s photograph?
People did that as a show of compassion to the Norwegian people during the July 2011 bombing/shootings. That Facebook post is probably from July last year.
Fantastic excuse NOT to celebrate Independence Day.
Is it normal for an ambassador to shorten words like “y”, “u” and “thku”? Anyone who does that sounds like an idiot.
No, which is why people who write like that should never be made ambassador.
And anyway, ambassador or not, it’s not normal for any woman of her age and supposed education to write like that.
It’s retarded.
As Daphne says, kemm ahna pajjiz tan-n*jk.
Qed nifhem sew jien li la l-President u lanqas il-PM ma huma se’ jkunu Malta fil-21 ta’ Settembru? X’kumbinazzjoni.
Stupid, bitter woman! And now that she is an ambassador, shouldn’t she stop using Facebook?
As if. It’s all systems go when you want to hook a man. Facebook has its uses in that regard. It’s a sort of way of advertising yourself.
So Muscat will be away from the island for the official Independence celebrations? That means they will be downgraded.
Methinks PN is right to mark the festivities, although they should donate all proceeds towards the employees.
And what other national day is she rabbiting on about here?
‘we will postpone the national day celebrations to another national day’? Jum Il-Helsien?
Postponing the national day celebration to another national day, for which read we are (again) suppressing Independence Day and replacing it with Republic Day.
Turning diplomacy into a village soap.
Not village, but Tigne Beach.
Will there be a reception on Independence Day in New York given by Malta’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations?
So Joseph Muscat is going to be in USA on Malta’s Independence Day. Is this a mere coincidence or a perfect excuse to be away from the island?
That way he does not have to preside over the official ceremonies. So much for his reconciliation, blah, blah.
Omg, how impolite
Could the ‘another National Day’ mean ‘Republic Day’ in December?
There is a Maltese consulate in New York – I presume they have an office where they can celebrate the event.
http://www.embassypages.com/missions/embassy5746/
Ambassador to the US who writes English like a 14 year old determined to be non-conformist.
Her writing is the outward expression of her thinking, and you nailed it in one.
There is another angle to it. The prime minister is making a point of being away from Malta on the first chance to celebrate Independence Day as prime minister.
It’s not a problem, Daphne – we’re used to dealing with this type of individual in the US. In fact there are websites on how to recognize a redneck when you see one, the hair for one.
[Daphne – She isn’t a redneck. She’s one of those people who uses rednecks to his/her advantage, having worked out that it’s a whole lot easier to manipulate/impress/patronise rednecks than your own kind or your betters, who have little patience for that kind of thing and who slot you into your proper place. Her lack of intellectual development is, in fact, typical of her gender, background and generation – nothing to do with being a redneck. Many women of that profile are similar: frozen mentally at the age of 16.]
Not diplomatic material – but then that post was just a reward, though not quite sure for what exactly.
I hate repeating myself, but this is a perfect example, if you jump into a sewer and you’re there for long enough you get used to the smell. Marisa’s fully acclimatised.
Is the Prime Minister present long enough in Malta to govern?
Why does anyone refer to “the Maltese and Gozitan community’? Do the italians refer to ‘the Italian, Sardinian, and Sicilian communities’?
It was Eddie Fenech Adami who started it. Lawrence Gonzi then turned it into a sacred cow.
I used to think that it was quite a raw deal to have to leave this world in order to have a chance at having a crack at God’s Kingdom.
Today I’d leave the world for the promise of nothing.
Weren’t it for my absolutely lovely wife and my very old parents I’d gladly contemplate suicide rather the alternative of living on this sad and little horrid planet, especially practically all the people inhabiting it who are the species responsible for making it so disgusting in the first place.
Somebody once was scandalized at the idea that the military were tinkering with developing a bomb that would leave most of the rest of nature untouched yet eliminate all humanity.
It is eminently high time such a device is used if anybody has it.
And I truly wonder why the God Lord doesn’t do away with it all once and for all, sooner rather than later. Creation was great but getting rid of the created would be greater still since the created don’t deserve His gifts.
