This site had 305,000 views yesterday

For comparative purposes, on polling day it had 368,000 views. The high figure – around 25,000 higher than that on the day the John Dalli/Bahamas scandal broke this summer – is directly linked to the Norman Vella case.

People, it seems, relate more closely to the arrest and detention of a man on trumped-up charges of taking a picture of Kurt Farrugia, and the sequestering of his phone and tablet by the police, than they do to a Maltese EU Commissioner making secret, hasty trips from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean to move millions of dollars for a client who is an international fraudster with multiple aliases.

The magnitude of the John Dalli factor, and what it means in terms of his close relationship to the prime minister is, I think, beyond the scale of comprehension.

But most of us can imagine ourselves arrested and detained by the police and having our communication devices abusively sequestered by them. For many of us, it is a reality we lived through and grew up with, and the response is Pavlovian.

I’d like to think that the reason for the increase is that you’re gaining in popularity because people are discovering the the true colours of this government and the bias or incompetence of the other media sources.

  2. lullaby says:

Not only the incompetence of the other media but also the fact that the opposition is fast asleep as the moment…..how about waking up to smell the coffee/pong?

    • Jozef says:

I’m actually tired of people saying the Opposition’s dormant.

Hanging on to civilised behaviour and its ethical restrictions on discourse yes, by all means. But I prefer that to some Muscat clone spiting everyone with told you so’s.

Then there’s the idea of opposition which has to evolve,

The Independent has what it takes to criticise, who gives a toss what Sansone’s up to. His days are numbered if he’ll just copy and paste.

Even Maltatoday won’t give up on its focus, MEPA, environmental issues and the rights of human beings saved from sinking boats.

Things will come to a head when this government clashes with the EU. Rest assured it will. The opposition requires everyone.

Jason, Beppe, Marco, Chris, Claudette, there’s so many valid people, Simon does well to push them. If Jason can expound perfectly well the issue, let him to it.

Personally I think Tonio should round up Konrad’s scam and tear it pieces.

The PN’s undergoing a major mindshift, so we miss Lawrence Gonzi, doesn’t mean his style and fast paced rhetoric should be imposed on his successor.

What matters is to follow closely public opinion and set about building around it. To date Labour’s avoided politics whatsoever, even this passport business is being rushed through parliament.

What’s certain is that five years of snide bullying isn’t sustainable. Either they degenerate or they back off.

They don’t have good governance at heart, simply too compromised.

  3. Il-Hsieb tar-Ronnie says:

Congratulations! The Times of Malta was the singular hope of freedom of expression in 1979 when it was burnt down. The ghost of that newspaper has now passed the torch of such freedom to you. Keep it alive!

    • Jozef says:

      Well said.

I’m sick of this unwritten rule which gives Times of Malta some arbitrary right over public opinion.

Times of Malta belongs to established interests. No space for controversy.

  4. P Shaw says:

A section of Malta wants a western-style modern media, that is currently missing in the form of a paper.

We only have non-political parties newspapers that pussyfoot around the issues or are completely dishonest and non-trustworthy.

  5. Drinu says:

    Prosit, keep it up.

You and The Malta Independent are the only reliable source of Maltese news.

  6. ciccio says:

    Excellent.

The truth is getting out there.

  7. soss says:

    keep going Ma’am

  8. Taki says:

Simple. For excellent, incisive, no holds barred journalism at its best, this is the ONLY site which needs visiting. There are too many wimps around.

  9. sahha says:

Daphne ghalkemm jghajjruk u jtuk laqmijiet, int tibqa sejra ghall-affari tieghek. Tkompli tinvestiga u tikxef il-qerq ta’ Joseph il-Bully.

Kompli ghax int qed taghti servizz lil Malta u lil Maltin. Bis-sahha tieghek qed insiru nafu x’jista jkun hemm lest ghalina.

Zminijiet koroh zgur ser ikollna imma bis-sahha tieghek mhux ser inhalluh ikisser dak kollu li f’25 sena ghamel il partit nazzjonalista bit-tajjeb u l-hazin tieghu.

Joseph wieghed haga u taghna affarijiet ohra li ma ivvutajniex ghalijhom. U dan ghax jahseb li jista jaghmel kollox ghax ghandu l-maggoranza assoluta fil-Parlament.
Forsi ghadu ma jafx (miskien??) li kif il-poplu tellaw hekk jista jnizlu minnufih.

    Prosit u ibqa sejra hekk.

  10. Dissident says:

Living in Malta seems to be a constant struggle to educate retards every goddamn five years till the PN are back in government, rinse and repeat, over and over till the day the Mintoff legacy dies off – then we can finally proclaim we are a civilised European country

  11. Volley says:

Jien lil Daphne nemmen biss ghax dak li tghid u tikteb hu minnu ! Full stop! Well done Daphne!! Keep it going!

  12. Paddy says:

Congrats Daphne. Besides the views can you know the number of Shares & “Recommends” you get?

  13. anthony says:

The present political situation is far worse than it was during the Golden Years.

Then we had, at least, a fearless giant of a politician as a reference point in Fenech Adami.

This time round the only ray of hope that Maltese people of goodwill have is Daphne’s inimitable style of journalism, her consistency, her perseverance and her courage.

This is the reason for the phenomenal hit rate.

  14. Tabatha White says:

    You are simply brilliant Daphne.

There is no one single journalist in the media today with as much clarity of thought, value and purpose across the political scene.

So clear, direct and fitting, that the appropriate response and direction is at your fingertips. Never meddled or muddled.

  15. chacha says:

I agree with Josef”s first comment and ” well done women “! goes for Daphne

  16. Maltease says:

And well deserved. You are my only source for Maltese news.

Out of curiosity… If I check your site 3 times in a day, would that count as 3 hits? Or is the data intelligent enough to recognise same “source”?

[Daphne – That 305,000 figure is literally views, nothing to do with ‘hits’ or unique visitors. It means that pages got looked at 305,000 times, by whoever, within the space of 24 hours.]

  17. Maltese Peasant says:

Well done, your reporting on major issues which the mainstream press did not really and truly delve into (John Dalli, Shiv Nair, etc) sure earned you respect among many readers, even if they might not agree with you on all aspects. Keep it up.

  18. follower says:

Keep it up Daphne. When discussing certain issues I always cite your blog. When doing so, I realize that many other people do the same. Keep up the good work.

  19. Malta’s population is about 400,000.
    300,000 is 75% of that.

Muscat & Mallia should take note.
