And the plotting and scheming go on…

At supper together at the Rickshaw restaurant at the Corinthia Palace yesterday night, at a table for four: Michael Farrugia, the parliamentary secretary responsible for the Malta Environment and Planning Authority, his personally appointed, state-paid consultant Robert Musumeci, who presents cases for clients before the MEPA, and their long-term girlfriends, Amanda Mifsud (who was given a grace-and-favour job at Malta Freeport after the election) and Magistrate Consuelo Herrera.

Do these people have any real friends?

My magistrate, your magistrate. A life of a wild spectacular fashion. God deliver us from evil.

  4. Nighthawk says:

Just to spell it out, “and Magistrate Consuelo Herrera who has been known to dabble in property in the past”.

Resignation from one, impeachment of the other, but only in the real world, of which, apparently, we do not form part.

What does conflict of interest mean? I’m confused.

  6. ODZ says:

Finishing touches to the ODZ policy being discussed.

    • Jozef says:

What policy? It will be a set of open ended statements which only arbitrary intrepretation can define.

No need to say who gets to gel planning technique with legal disquisition.

What matters will be the apology of mediocrity in design and subsequent abuse.

  7. Nik says:

We have a coup d’état unfolding before our very eyes. Just because power was achieved by democratic means does not confer legitimacy, because it is being used to undermine the checks and balances that are supposed to ensure governance according to the rule of law.

The army, police and broadcasting have already been overhauled and a culture of intimidation installed within the ranks.

Bizarrely all those are controlled by the same Minister, how very banana republic. All the bodies, boards and other entities have been transformed beyond recognition: MEPA plays a fundamental role, because it’s decisions determine what the country will look like in the future and lead to considerable wealth.

Those lucky few will know what side their bread is buttered on: they always do. I expect the judiciary is also within the government’s sights, though Magistrate Herrera may still need to wait a tad longer for her promotion to the higher bench.

I don’t want to sound too dramatic, but the situation is very serious. People may not notice or care, but the space for dissent will get narrower. The argument that this can’t happen because we are in the EU, does not hold: look at Hungary and Bulgaria.

Coups do not need guns and militias; apathy can be just as effective.

  8. Neil says:

These people are always in each other’s pockets. Last Sunday, I saw Mr. & Mrs. Glan Badingfield lunching with Mr. & Mr. Cyrus Engerer in a Gzira/Sliema eatery.

It must be really tedious agreeing with your companions all the time, with no chance of a good debate one in a while.

  9. Min Weber says:

    But this needs further analysis.

It is clear that Michael Farrugia is close to Muscat. Otherwise why put him in charge of such a sensitive portfolio?

On the other hand, it is clear that Jose’ Herrera is not in Muscat’s good books, otherwise why put him in charge of the Cinderella of portfolios, Local Councils and Culture?

So, why is Farrugia scheming with Herrera’s sister?

On the other hand, here we have Farrugia’s mistress whose sister is now Pullicino Orlando’s new mistress, and Pullicino Orlando is one of Musumeci’s best friends. Are these really the links between the people sitting at that table?

Alfred Sant used to speak of il-hbieb tal-hbieb.

Emmy Bezzina speaks of crieki fi crieki fi crieki.

I think we ought to know more about these hbieb tal-hbieb, these crieki fi crieki fi crieki. This is in-your-face hmieg fi hmieg fi hmieg mal-hbieb tal-hbieb tal-hbieb.

You call it demi-monde. Others would call it other names.

It’s a parallel organisation intent on influencing the workings of the state.

It has ramifications in the three powers of the state and key authorities, can alter decisions which can make or break business and has shown itself to be consistently reliable on the loyalty of its exponents.

Toto Riina has been blamed by other old school mafiosi as having singlehandedly destroyed Cosa Nostra with his brash, uncompromising decisions and resorting to spectacular violence.

The least known organised crime phenomenon is Puglia’s Sacra Corona Unita. Matriarchical, strictly family based and allergic to violence.

  11. Michael Seychell says:

And Alfred Sant used to refer to the P.N. government as Friends of Friends – ‘Hbieb tal-Hbieb’.

It would be interesting to ask Dr. Sant, who will be asking for our vote in the E.U. Parliament elections , whether he is happy with the appointments handed out by this government: all Super One employees were appointed to various state-paid positions, and even newly employed ‘journalists’ at Super One have been given jobs at PBS.

Shame on you Dr. Alfred Sant for keeping silent on these horrendous abuses by your former aide Joseph Muscat and his government.

  12. curious says:

And look at this. When Muscat feels cornered, he opens a war on another front.

“Dr Muscat pointed out that the health minister requested investigations be kick-started to find who the person/s responsible for such shortcomings are, and to determine if it were a question of negligence or theft.”

‘Opposition boycotting government’s healthcare analysis’ – PM
    The Malta Independent

    • Jozef says:

Exactly, to be followed by an internal pogrom.

Muscat found all the ammo he can get to distract from the citizenship debacle. And it’s all pointing in one direction.

    • Gahan says:

Mater Dei Report: we have already heard the “shocking news” in the Prime Minister’s budget speech.

Mr Prime Minister, you are in deeeep sh*t; pity that we are with you.

The Health Minister is the next sacrificial lamb. But there could be consequences.

Let’s see – when Claudette Buttigieg wins the recount lawsuit (fifty votes were ‘misplaced’), Labour will have to throw overboard Dr Justyne Caruana, and the Labour majority will go down from nine to seven.

If Marlene Farrugia and Godfrey Farrugia resign the party whip, the government’s majority will go down to three.

Marlene Farrugia wanted to contest the MEP elections, and so did Dr Joe Sammut who has been left out in the cold by Joseph Muscat.

      Enough said.

Labour’s presidential material, Vella will be remembered for his double standards during the Libyan crisis, explosive rants against students on radio and an explicit anti-EU stance.

One also has to ask whether he’ll continue seeing ‘patients’ at his clinic in Zejtun.

A few lines from Alexander Stille book, Excellent Cadavers. ‘with consummate skill, Riina destroyed his rivals by playing on divisions within the families, personal enmities and ambitions so that he got others to do his dirty work in what appeared like various isolated episode, but that, in fact, fit into a clear design of Riina`s creation.’ Sounds familiar, or am I dreaming.

  16. L-ieħor says:

Daphne and I were in the same year – actually the same group – as Consuelo Herrera at sixth form at St Aloysius College. So yes, Daphne does know what she is talking about, as do I.

When I see these photos, I remember Consuelo already plotting and scheming back in those days with friends and against friends, but I also say “F’hiex waqgħet”.

In those days she’d have never dreamed of being seen with the likes of Michael Farrugia and his girlfriend or even Robert Musumeci. She was a ‘pulita’ (thought she was) and had to be seen as one. She was desperate always to be seen with ‘puliti’.

I even remember her introducing us to her new boyfriend, later to be her husband, and her first words were “Have you met Lawrence? He’s a doctor.” And that was just to say “I’ve made it. I’m dating a doctor.”. Xi dwejjaq ta’ nies.
