Secret weekend negotiations, and how some Africans are way more equal than others in Malta’s eyes

Published: February 11, 2014 at 4:40pm

Last Saturday at around 5pm, a group of around eight African men emerged from the Evans building in lowermost Valletta, where matters concerning passports and identity cards are dealt with.

They left through the main door and not through a side entrance, which indicates that this government office was, that afternoon, open just for them. The door was immediately locked after they left.

There was a minibus waiting for them outside.

They were well dressed and the person who observed them and reported his observations to this website said that they spoke English between themselves, with a strong accent he was unable to identify.

However, I think we will find that the accent was non-white South African. After receiving this information, I remembered that just a day before, on Friday, a friend who takes a bit of interest in tracking non-scheduled aircraft movements had picked up a jet which flew non-stop from South Africa to Malta that same day, Friday.

This group was seen at the Evans Building on Saturday.

    Zimbabwe.

    • La Redoute says:

Tanzania, Kenya, Lesotho, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Sudan, Somalia, Cameroon, Gambia, Malawi, South Africa, Zambia, Namibia, Swaziland?

    Bloody hell.

This would coincide with the direct flight of that Canadair Challenger from South Africa to Malta on Friday.

What’s going here? I think it’s time we started pressing the PM for answers.

[Daphne – Coincidentally, I just added that bit of information as it suddenly occurred to me.]

If they were from South Africa, they weren’t here to discuss citizenship. They were here to pick up a passport.

Henley and Partners has an office in South Africa. Presumably, that’s the office that handles applications from South Africans.

If passports have been issued to this group, we will never know their names officially because of the secrecy clause that has not yet been lifted.

  4. La Redoute says:

The offices at Evans building no longer handle ID cards. That operation has been moved to Gattard House in Blata l-Bajda.

Only the passport office remains at Evans building.

These must be friends of either Mugabe or Zuma or both. These are that class of individuals, favoured by the despot in Zim or part of the inner circle in RSA. Their wealth has grown disproportionately in a very short time whilst many still languish in poverty in the townships.

  6. Francis Saliba MD says:

The need to hide from the gaze of genuine native Maltese citizens the furtive goings-on of these foreigners in search of camouflage netting to conceal themselves among us is a most disturbingly non-transparent endeavor by a government that promised transparency.

The passports office in Malta on Saturdays closes at 11.00 am.
How come it was still open at 5.00 pm?

    Black South African I’m assuming?

    • albona says:

Yeh of the type who use the ANC to keep the rest of the blacks stupid and ignorant whilst they build up their own bank accounts. Interesting parallels could be drawn with the MLP.

Who controls the diamond mines in South Africa these days?

If only the Public Registry really was public.

  11. Galian says:

Could a certain property negotiator, who was based for quite some time in South Africa and has recently returned to Malta, have anything to do with this?

  12. Nighthawk says:

These are just some of the ones we’ve noticed. The finance ministry has already accepted deposits of a few millions.

I guess that makes Joey, Manwel and their agents (Henley) fences.

That’s what you are when you sell stolen goods, right? Now if only someone would lodge a police report.

I have only a few observations: 1) it is important to differentiate between South Africa and Southern African states. South Africa is a wealthy country and the largest economy in Africa. The type of person a jurisdiction like Malta would attract from there is historically a white, wealthy entrepreneur – something Malta could really benefit by VS black African states and dictators – which is a different kettle of fish , entirely. The one brings value and expertise the other takes. 2) Malta is one of the most complex jurisdictions in which to gain either residency or citizenship and I believe the current government follows high standards of due diligence and pre- qualification – something most Maltese citizens seem to be in aware of. The Ex Patriates I have met in Malta – wether British, Australian or White South Africans have been people I am proud to know and in my view have brought huge value to our Island.
