Iranian sanctions-evaders are buying St Kitts & Nevis passports

Caribbean News Now and The Caribbean Times report that three Iranians with St Kitts and Nevis passports have been identified by the US Treasury Department as being part of “an elaborate Iranian network of sanctions evaders”.

You will note that they do not speak of St Kitts & Nevis citizens but of “Iranians with St Kitts & Nevis passports”, because those passports are purchased under a system like Malta’s, organised by the same people, Henley & Partners.

A bought passport is a bought passport is a bought passport, and similarly, those who buy a Maltese passport will be viewed not as Maltese citizens but as their real nationality ‘with a Maltese passport’.

But of course, that’s a side issue to this story, which is that sanctions evaders are buying passports.

Absolutely correct. Which means that the risk to our country’s reputation could come from any country where there are sanctions in force – like Russia, for instance.
