That’s why the head of state has justified and justifiable access to the use of a private plane, President Coleiro

Published: April 27, 2014 at 7:47pm

Newsbook, the online newspaper operated by the Catholic Church (same as RTK – Radju Tal-Knisja), which often has some of the best interviews and news stories, is the only one who bothered to do the obvious and chase President Coleiro for an explanation of why she pulled out of the canonisation ceremony at the Vatican today.

Her excuse? “I couldn’t find a return flight to get me back in time to meet a UNHCR delegation which is going to be in Malta tomorrow and Tuesday.”

What, no return flight possible tomorrow?

That’s why the head of state and head of government are entitled to the use of a private plane, President Coleiro: to allow them to keep up with their commitments at home and abroad.

Iffrankajtilna l-flus u waqqajtilna wiccna l-art.

And this wasn’t even about saving money, was it? A private flight to Rome and back costs far less that the Eur40,000 Marie Louise Coleiro spent advertising her ‘Poverty Week’, and certainly a good deal less than the fortune wasted on her six-hour coronation-cum-white-wedding ceremony.

If she wanted to be present for the canonisation and also attend tomorrow’s 9.00am meeting with the UNCHR she could have taken these flights :

      (a) From Rome Fiumicino to Milano Linate with Alitalia at 17.00hrs arriving in Linate at 18.10

      (b) Air Malta flight from Milano Linate to Malta leaving at 21.20 and arriving in Malta at 23.15 (which in fact has landed already at 23.05)

So this is what it’s going to be like, eh? The President cutting corners and not fulfilling her duties or adhering to basic courtesy to ‘cut costs’ in the wrong places. As if Muscat, Dalli, push-backs, the prostitution of Maltese citizenship, hunting and Chris Packham’s treatment haven’t tarnished our reputation enough.

  2. Jozef says:

That’s the most pathetic excuse ever.

    Her Excellency failed the Republic.

  3. canon says:

Didn’t President Marie Louise Colerio Preca say that she wants to invite Pope Francis to visit Malta? What happened to the invitation?

    • albona says:

If this bunch of reds invites the Pope there will be one veiled insult after the other, purposely offending the Vatican. The PL is a divisive party. They still despise the Church.

    Liar !

  5. Slimiz says:

Joseph Muscat and his government went to all lengths to justify Justyne’s Caruana’s helicopter trip to Malta, stating that it was done in the national interest, yet it didn’t occur to them to fly the president back from this historic ceremony.

They have truly rendered us a global embarrassment.

The canonization ceremony should have been postponed to a later date.

The presidency was forced on her, she’s paying back her enforcer. That’s my opinion.

  11. AE says:

U l-aqwa marret Mishall “we’ll make the most of it” Farrugia oops sorry Muscat.

It’s about the most honest statement made about the Labour government. As for Marileweez, she couldn’t be bothered about what her real duties are as head of state. She is going to continue doing what she has always done – reinforce the culture of patronage to satisfy her own ego.

She wouldn’t get that kick sitting through a ceremony at the Vatican.

  12. Tabatha White says:

How feeble! Besides, there are other means of transportation.

The President elbowed out. As though it wasn’t obvious that this is what was going to be happening. The pushover. Words. Media exposure. Nothing Labour does is done seriously.

Where’s the order in the house?

Check out the rates – so effectively this cost the taxpayer more as I assume Anglu and his wife-for- a-day Mishall didn’t share a room .

Mela miss an opportunity hi……u majtezwel tigi mieghi l-habiba, mhux se norqod ma’ Anglu hux. Ma tarax li l-papa se jiftakar li ghadu kif iltaqa mieghi ma jozef. U billi…..mur ara…..x’fija.

Or she didn’t want to go without her husband who preferred to attend the Birkirkara – Valletta match yesterday.

  15. ZORRO says:

She could have easily come back through other airports and taken a connecting flight like Rome-Milan and then Milan-Malta.There are so many other flight connections. Sounds a weak excuse.

  16. Tessie says:

So the President couldn’t find a return flight. Wouldn’t it have been better of Mrs Muscat did not go to this event as Mrs Farrugia and her seat taken by the President. Isn’t it more important that the President shows up rather than Mixell?

  17. Gahan says:

RTK officially means: Radju ta’ kullħadd, not Radju tal-Knisja even if it owned and run by the Maltese diocese.

It also stands for: Right to know.

[Daphne – It was Radju Tal-Knisja at the outset. If it has since been changed to Radju ta’ Kullhadd, I didn’t know about it.]

  18. anthony says:

The President ought to understand, and the sooner the better, that she is now the President of all Maltese.

These include, apart from PL voters, people with brains.

Coleiro tell it to the marines.

With apologies to that most valiant group of men, and very soon women, who make up The Royal Marines.

  19. Harry Purdie says:

Do they not comprehend the damage they are inflicting on what’s left of Malta’s reputation?

  20. ciccio says:

So for President Marilweez Kulajru Romanova of St. George Preca meeting a UNHCR delegation was more important than representing Malta in the unique event of the canonisation of two Popes, one of whom paid Malta the first visit ever by a Pope?

  21. Meshallveryhappy says:

Why are so many not believing Mrs. President?

The scary part to this story is that it’s probably true.

In Coleiro Preca’s book saving on a flight – or not being seen as spending on luxuries such as a privat plane, is more important than being there with the rest of the world representing us at such a memorable event.

Ghax dawk tal-PN kienu berbqu ghal cucati bhal dawn!

That’s an insight into her value set.

A private jet flew in just before 2.00 p.m. today. Could it have been to get Anglu and his pretend wife back from Rome or was it for some client to purchase his Maltese citizenship ?

  27. Tom Double Thumb says:

This incident can be compared to the occasion when the Malta Representative failed to appear at an official function, in India if I remember well. That was not so long ago and was widely commented on at the time.

  28. il busu says:

Madam President will have to realize that not all Maltese are gullible.

The President does not book flight tickets – there are people on her staff who are responsible for doing that.

So it is either a case of incompetent staff who were unable to book her a same-day return ticket OR as you Daphne have indicated a bare faced lie by Madam President.

  29. Jane says:

Could it be that Coleiro Preca was not ‘allowed’ to go to Rome by her husband because Anglu Farrugia was going to be there? I refer to the rumours about her attempt on his marriage years back.

It’s bad enough that we have a prime minister who chooses to run the country with the ‘tar-rahal’ mentality, putting private matters before public, and sending his wife instead of him.
