I remember the days between the referendum and the general election: the brink of a civil democratic melt down in Malta town.

Toqgħodx tistħi, Fred. B’idu miftugħa jilqak Nigel Farage.

Bħala “euro-realist” li temmen fil-kuncett tal-“Europe of Nations”, kif kont ġentlom biżżejjed li tgħidilna, mhu se tkun komdu xejn mas-socjalisti. Fil-fatt, kif issemmilhom ‘Europe of nations’ dawn jaqbadhom il-bard u jgħidu: ‘Dan żgur lemini, faxxist, estremist, nazzjonalist…’

Mela kif kien qal Bulculuvier fil-wannaj seventiwann, Fred: Ejja magħna! Wed ngħidlek bil-miftugħ fuq il-blog tad-Dafnuwa. Nippreparawlek platt kirxa għal ma Nigel u nixorbu ftit inbid bnin… mela xampanja socjalista, Fred, biex joqgħodu jgħajruk tat-Talibani minn fuq.

Looks like my plea to Alfred Sant has had an immediate effect. Thank you Doctor Sant:

EFD gains socialist MEP from Malta

Nigel Farage’s EFD group has just gained an MEP from the socialist group after former Maltese prime minister Alfred Sant quite the group after being elected on a Labour ticket. ‘There is no place for me in the socialist group,’ Mr Sant told journalists gathered in Mr Farage’s office.

Mr Sant, prime minister of Malta between 1996 and 1998, announced just after his election that he was a euro-realist who believed in “the concept of a Europe of nations.”

Following talks with the president of the EFD group, UKIP leader Nigel Farage, Mr Sant said he wanted to be true to the electorate and felt that joining the S&D group offered “no opportunities for [him] to speak freely on controversial issues, such as the federalisation of the eurozone…”

Just turned on Net TV re latest about the 6th EP seat:

Special Offer buy 3 get 6 Free super bras for €49.90. How apt.

    Tal-biki

  4. Roberta says:

We can never hope to rationally understand the 51,000+ votes for Alfred Sant. It defies all logic.

The answer lies in the way Labour’s core vote is programmed to worship the party leader. Theirs is not an intelligent choice but an emotive one. Hence their faith in the leader is absolute.

    • Joseph Caruana says:

I see Sant returning to pole position.

      • drood says:

Or how about President Emeritus Dr George Abela?

[Daphne – ‘Former president George Abela’, please. Let’s stick to idiomatic English as far as possible.]

  5. Aunt Hetty says:

Karl Stagno Navarra was on ONE tv this evening bootlicking Alfred Sant and the Labour Party and lauding Alfred Sant for his savoir faire re European affairs. He must be looking out for a cushy, well- paid job in Brussels when his contract with Malta Enterprise is done.

  6. M. Cassar says:

What is that Maltese proverb, ”Il-kelb il-mismut kull ilma jahsbu mishun?”

Those who lived through Mintoff, KMB and Sant’s ‘golden’ rule will undesrstand the rawness of cords related to certain issues.

‘But Scicluna is now proposing that data samples from bank transactions and credit cards should also be collected. “The best way is to survey consumer’s purchases from household surveys. Another source which can complement this is to collect data samples from bank transactions and credit cards,” the minister said when asked how NSO could keep better track of online sales.
Scicluna said the banks “will be asked” to transmit aggregated data from a given stratified sample.’

    • curious says:

Very good. Surely Scicluna is not interested in how many pairs of underwear we buy.

It is China fil-Mediterran from now on. Mallia knows all the data. Scicluna will do likewise but in the financial sector.

The banks should start a revolution. If they give in to this one, nobody will stop the Emperor.

    • drood says:

And bang goes bank confidentiality !

  7. observer says:

“Gunther Verhoegen ahjar jigdem ilsienu, ghaliex inkella nigdmuhulu ahna”. The zenith of Alfred Sant’s political approach to the EU ‘talibans’.

  8. Sv says:

I simply cannot believe it. As I said earlier, it’s not Simon Busuttil who is the problem. It’s the ignorant population which is creating this mess or rather the ignorant Laburisti.

  9. drood says:

Given the Maltese electoral system (proportional representation and not “first past the post”), do you think it was a good idea for the MLP to promote dumping 51,000+ votes on Alfred Sant instead of having the first preference votes distributed over the other MLP candidates?

Did this massive first preference voting for Alfred Sant have a say in the award of the 6th seat or was it just the luck of the draw?

    • observer says:

Re your last question: It did not and certainly was not.

As for the Maltese electoral system: having participated on several occasions in the counting process I am more than convinced that it faithfully represents the particular wishes of each and every voter as expressed in the ballot paper.

The process is certainly lengthy, boring and tiresome – but its benefits by far outdo the ‘first past the post’ system. None of the preferences is lost in the process – unless the voter had expressly desired, or at least indicated, that it should be, just by refraining from voting for all the candidates in his Party’s list.

  10. Calculator says:

I hear some Labourites say that with his election into the EP, “Fl-aħħar, ġustizzja saret ma’ Alfred Sant.” What the heck is that supposed to even mean?

He did such a lousy job last time he got elected people say that the PN were in power for 25 years. Well, they weren’t, and there’s a reason people seem eager to forget those 2 years Sant was Prime Minister.

  11. Albert says:

Alfred Sant, idiot supreme. Mintoff said it and the legacy holds true, but the PL supporters, that have only a shred of intelligence won’t except that.

He’ll muddle along as an MEP and write love stories!!!!!!
