Times of Malta today remarks on “a rare appearance” by the deputy prime minister yesterday

Louis Grech rare appearance

I would have expected Louis Grech to play a more prominent part in being a public face of this government, not just because he was selected to replace Anglu Farrugia as deputy party leader due to his advantages in this regard, but also because he is the deputy prime minister.

Yet he is all but invisible.

He does not represent the prime minister/government at significant events in which the prime minister’s presence is expected but not possible, and there is no understanding , feeling or impression that he is the second-in-command, so to speak, or in charge in any way at all.

We see far more of Police and Army Minister Manuel Mallia, who has been cast in the public eye and that of the media – in general perception – as the de facto deputy prime minister and second-in-command.

Now that the votes of ‘smart’ switchers are required once more, Louis Grech was brought out for a public appearance at a Labour Party meeting yesterday, which Times of Malta described as “rare”.

Guido de Marco, Lawrence Gonzi and Tonio Borg played a far more prominent role as deputy prime ministers, and people were well aware of who the deputy PM was at the time. Now, there are many people who think it’s Manuel Mallia.

Louis Grech did make an appearance, there he exists (with apologies to Descartes)

When Louis Grech is brought out of the box, he either lives or dies. (With apologies to Schrödinger)

Possibly personal issues (not related to politics) bar him from appearing very often.

    • Gahan says:

He should have stayed out of politics if he had personal issues hindering him from doing a full time job as deputy prime minister.

Oh! That’s right – for a second there, I had thought Michelle was our deputy prime minister, silly me.

It is all a mediatic trick. JM has 2 teams: one which faces the public and the media on a day to day basis, and another which stays in the shade most of the time.

The first team attracts all the negative feedback from the public/media while the second team shows up in public before an election nice and clean without any blemish.

Thus the public will be fooled into thinking that Muscat is surrounded by a positive, fresh team while he keeps the “bad” team away from public eye during election time.

The real minister with power in this kind of environment is Manuel Mallia, with the police, army and broadcasting. If this were China, he would make himself chairman.
