Coleiro preca

The head of state has called for more involvement with the immigrant community and she is right to do so in the face of their being treated like invading outsiders and having to deal with hostility, bitterness, resentment, stares and insults on a daily basis.

And this has now made her the target of the irrational anger and aggression which, unfortunately, her former political party helped foment and augment.

Beneath news reports of President Coleiro Preca’s call for more support to the immigrant community it’s all ‘tick tock Marie Louise’ and similar.

She was a cabinet minister when the government threatened vulnerable people with push backs. She did not utter one single word of disapproval. In fact she probably agreed with the push back policy because silence means consent.

Our PM has to take responsibility for the rise in racist and xenophobic sentiment.

Yes, the PL (not just Muscat) has to shoulder the major responsibility for the rise of racism but others – PN, Church, NGOs – have not been exactly vigorous in opposing it.
