Luciano Busuttil has pronounced himself on the matter of elections and their suspension

Luciano Busuttil

I need your help. I have spent a few minutes trying to work out what Labour MP Luciano Busuttil means by this, and I can’t. What is he trying to say here?

The man is a lawyer. I thought they were meant to be trained in logic and rational thought, or at least the ability to make a coherent argument.

Or maybe it’s just that his numbers skills are weak? I don’t know, but shouldn’t it be obvious even to a total chump that if general elections are held every five years then people voting for the first time are going to aged anything between 18 and 23? Like our kohl rabi here, I voted for the first time at 22 – just three months short of my 23rd birthday, actually.

He’s trying to impress like-minded cabbages with nonsense.

There is nothing of substance in what he has said.

A country composed primarily of cabbages governed by cabbages.

Does he really have a seat in Parliament?? **FACEPALM**

Sorry Daphne, I can not help you in this one. Much too complicated. I am not that analytical.

One has to be a LB to answer you.

Fi ftit kliem, ghamlu bhali, ghax jien injorant. Ma nifilhux ghal elezzjoni kull sena. Iss Bravu hej. Mhux Malta kollha ser tkun tivvota kull sena imma partijiet koncernati. L-sesperjenza mhux il kliem vojt ta certi nies urietna li bilkemm parti tkun taf li f`parti ohra ta Malta qed issir elezzjoni, tant kienu jsiru organizzati sew u bil kwiet, il kalma u l-galbu. Liz zghazagh ta 16 jghidilhom jiehdu pacenzja, issa li dahqu bihom, ma qalulhomx li mhux ser jivvotaw, imma li jridu jaghmlu bhal xi bahnan u joqghod jistenna. U jekk xi guvnott jew xbejba jipprotestaw dan lest jghidilhom li hu ghamel 25 sena jistenna biex mhux wasal imma ghamluh fejn qieghed. Mur gibu jiddefendilek kawza il qorti dan. Jekk titlef jghidlek hu pacenzja u jekk ma jkunx jaf x`ser jaghmel jghidlek there is always a tomorrow. Qed ilesti ghal generazzjoni li tiela u qed ilellxilhom il lehha tas sunnara u l-lixka. Iva dawk ser jivvutaw. Wisq probabbli ghandhom xi xamma li hawn aktar tfal ta 11 milli ta 16 allura imorru ghal dawk biex l-ewwel joghorkuhom, imbaghad juzawhom, jiedulhom il vot u barra bid-daqq. Kemm hu vag, bla sugu, jpeclaq li hemm bzonn riforma fil kunsilli bla ma jghid x riforma jissuggerixxi. Jissuggerixxi biss li ma jonqsux fin-numru. Imma nistaqsi jien, ghaliex ma qal xejn kif u meta ghandhom isiru l-elezzjonijiet ? Qed jibza li jxewwex lill Laburisti jew li joqros lin nazzjonalisti ? U jekk is sugget kien l postponiment tal elezzjonijiet ghaliex hareg barra mis-suggett u qabez f`haga li ma ghandha xejn x`taqsam ? Li kieku kien qed jiddefendini kien itellifli il kawza bil bajd u l-gobon ghax ma kienx jifhem x`qed jghidlu l-imhallef jew johroglu barra mis-suggett. Liz zghazagh nghidilhom li jiehdu pacenzja bhal ma qed naghmlu ahna imma tlett snin ohra nuruhom li rasna fuq ghonqna u mohh biex nahsbu u naghtu risposta ghandna.

In logic this is referred to as a non sequitur.

At least that is what Mons. Prof . Giuseppe Sapiano also known as Il-Kare’ the then chair of the department of Philosophy at the Royal University used to teach us.

Maybe even logic has changed since then.

What is certain is that, in those days, kohlrabis were seen (there were hundreds of thousands of them even then) but never heard.

  8. Wistin Schembri says:

We are all born ignorant, but one must work hard to remain stupid.

  9. Josette says:

He’s trying to defend the indefensible. Given that logic cannot work – and probably given that he is incapable of logic – he chose a circular, totally nonsensical non-argument. It would have been better for him if he’d kept his mouth shut but Facebook is simply too much of a temptation.

  10. White coat says:

He’s just telling us very clearly how stupid he is. By the same logic that he has presented us with it would be ok if general elections are held every 30 years instead of 5, but it would be highly undemocratic if the thirteen electoral districts were to be reduced.

  11. H.P. Baxxter says:

I think I know what he means. The washing machine broke down last week and Ritienne says the repairman spent all morning trying to fix it. Therefore, all general elections should be suspended until 2032.

  12. M says:

Ok, so according to Luciano Busuttil, it is the number of local councils and not the timely vote to choose the councillors that makes the process democratic or not.

Sorry Ms Caruana Galizia but, from what we are seeing daily, a law degree does not gurantee anything except the ability to make money or wield power or favour by circumventing laws, rules and regulations. Respecting and upholding the spirit of the law and protecting society is, sadly, what we watch on TV.

    • G says:

A law degree these days does not guarantee anything except that the student has turned up for their exams twice a year.

  13. curious says:

Don’t be surprised if some genius will compliment him and write ‘ prosit Luciano, bhal dejjem taf titkellem tajjeb, keep it up’.

  14. botom says:

If Luciano is so concerned with saving money why doesn’t he give up his pay and generous perks and allowances as Executive Chairman Kunsill Malti ghall-Isports?

  15. pale blue my foot! says:

The man is just plain ignorant with zilch IQ

  16. Gahan says:

After reading Dr Luciano Busuttil’s piece of “Labour Logic” you will start wondering how on earth this lawyer wins court cases.

Until you look at the line-up of judges and magistrates.

      • David says:

Now I don’t need to tell you H P Baxter who appointed most of these judges and magistrates.

      • H.P. Baxxter says:

A Maltese government, my dear DOTTOR David. Both Nationalist and Labour. Are you another of those idiots who thinks I’m a propagandist for the NP? You probably got into the University of Malta during a Nationalist administration, which says it all. They have very poor standards, just like their Labour counterparts.

      • David says:

MISTER or DOCTOR H. P Baxxter, neither am I a propagandist of any government. I only stated what can be argued from your assertion. In fact I think as in every profession and in everything in life, there are both good and also not so good members of the judiciary.

  17. jpaqui says:

We cannot afford an election each year for the following four years? I thought that the passport SALE scheme and the hundreds, perhaps thousands, would-be Maltese citizens would solve all our financial problems.

  18. QahbuMalti says:

What he is trying to do is ‘explain’ how their electoral promise to bring the local council voting age down to 16 will not be broken by moving elections to 2019.

If you are turning 16 next year and voting for the first time in 2015, our genius has figured out that you will now be voting in the general election in 2018 at the age of 19.

Likewise, if today you are 11 (and following Luciano Busuttil on Facebook because you know that’s what 11-year-olds who are not supposed to have FB would do) then you will get your first chance to vote in the 2019 LC election when you are 16.

Of course, he does not say anything about those turning 16 from 2015 to 2019, who’s would have been eligible for the electoral pledge.

They are just full of crap, have no idea what democracy is and have no competence. BUT they have an amazing Prosit machine at national level.

  19. Joe Azzopardi says:

How careful is Luciano about the country’s jewels. Changing the local councils elections will save Malta a lot of money. Unfortunately he forgot to mention the more than € 900 euros he is getting every week from my taxes. Luciano, get a life and stop trying to think that we are all morons !

  20. A VELLA says:

‘If we reduce the number of councils we will attack democracy itself.’ ergo ‘Let’s reduce the number of councils.’

  21. C C says:

    Answer him as I did.

  22. Caflanga says:

Nothing to do with logic. It’s the Labour road map.

  23. Felix says:

Luciano Busuttil: “if we reduce the number of local councils we will attach democracy itself”!

These people not only do not have an iota of logic and decency, but not even the slightest memory.

Does Luciano know that at the time, the Labour Party did not want the Local Councils and did not participate in them officially (though we knew that the ‘independent’ candidates were Labour?

Or maybe he is admitting that the Labour Party was undemocratic when it was not in favour of the introduction of the local councils?

On the other hand it could be that he is expressing what is really still in their hearts: they are still not in favour of the local councils. So let them rot.

Not voting for the local councils is as bad as not having them, or even worse, because you’re stuck with the under performers.

Not holding elections is more undemocratic than not having them in the first place. And Luciano is worried that it would be undemocratic if they were reduced.

  24. Hufflepuff says:

Is he friggin stupid? His logic does not make sense. So on one hand we don’t need the elections but then we are ‘attacking’ democracy. Did he pass his maths exams?

  25. Jeff Deaf says:

Another dumb shit prostituting himself. Nothing new. Half the population is occupied full time this way – and the remaining half applaud them.

  26. chico says:

    Daphne

Having read both Luciano’s tripe and BS’s vague insinuation that you might be Baxxter I feel we ought to start a lobby group promoting the introduction of LOGIC & REASONING into the school curriculum – and from an early age.

Less social studies, less of Maltese “literature” and the so called SOK, and a very big dose of THINKING is required – and urgently.

We’re producing graduates who are no better than a flock (is that the right word?) of lemmings – only the lemmings don’t do as much harm on their way to the cliff-edge.

Maybe Varist ought to take a break from sipping cappuccino’s with Cyrus at his father’s bar (Cyrus’s) and start digging deep into this unfolding tragedy.
