This is a real poster, hanging in a primary school classroom. If they are going to insist on spelling English words phonetically in Maltese, then that should be boksink.

Exactly with knobs on. If “gamper” is the same as “gerzi”, what does that say about Maltese dress sense?

Why not use the proper English spelling?

What is the plural?
Skejtbord singular, skejtbords plural or skejtbordijiet?

English has around 40% that is French-derived, small examples are “reveille”, “conduit” and “chevron”. But they are still written the French way.
What utter drivel. They are pig-ignorant and they want to make sure that everyone else is so that they are not out-shone.

Shouldn’t that be ‘hengbeg’?
That hurts my brain. While the rest of the world has realised that teaching language through phonetics is archaic and does not result in students obtaining the best language skills, in Malta a language council (who else has one one of these apart from the French?) regresses language to the bear phonetics without any consideration to the structure of the word.
For example we call a burger a burger as it is an abbreviation of hamburger, which in turn derives from the city of Hamburg. We now have ‘berger’ while still calling the city Hamburg (at least I hope so).
That would be bare phonetics, not bear.
You’re right – that’s what happens when someone is talking about bears right next to you.
We have “dijzil” while still calling the man Rudolf Diesel (I hope).
One would think parents would have enough collective smart sense to petition against this. Or is this in order? Would a petition be “out of line”? “Nkunu nidhru?”

It must be so terribly confusing for children. For a second I had to think twice on the proper spelling of the word “boxing”.

Why not stick to loki instead of tojlit; at least it sure looks more aesthetically pleasing.
At which level, do they introduce the word “wottehek”?
