Charles Polidano, known as Ic-Caqnu, was in the news yesterday for his appeal against being fined 100,000 euros for cutting down protected trees and destroying a rubble wall in the Balzan village core, to build flats.

He is also facing calls for police action because of his illegal zoo at the Monte Kristo estate.

Yet for some inexplicable reason, Labour functionaries, Labour politicians and party big cheeses just love to hold their special events there, and their children’s weddings too. Does he give them special prices, or do the special qualities of the venue hold a magnetic sway over them, causing them to prefer it to far more salubrious places?

The latest is our Alfred Sant, former Labour prime minister and now a Labour member of the European Parliament (let’s not go into the consistency issues). He is giving a talk at the Montekristo Estates wine vaults on 8 May, with a special guest appearance by Mario Vella, waste-of-space chairman of Malta Enterprise. Both are erstwhile Muscat mentors.

The name of the discussion? Il-Mudell Socjali Ewropej – X’Futur?

Well, what can I say? Let’s hope that the the future of the European social model does not consist of ex prime ministers, now back in the playpen as MEPS, and washed-up East-German-Stasi sympathisers now wasting space in the chair of Malta Enterprise, discussing European politics in the basement of a man facing police action for an illegal zoo and more.
