Chris Said’s position as Nationalist Party secretary-general was set to be confirmed at the General Council at the end of this month, but now he is to step down to begin campaigning for the party in Gozo. Let’s face it, with Mrs Debono straddling and guarding her turf and territory, not much could be done. That woman was given so much rope that, as happens with some politicians in such circumstances, she came to believe that the Nationalist Party was accountable to her, and not she to the party.

We’ve seen it happen before in a louder and more conspicuous way with Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando, John Dalli and Franco Debono, all of whom are now thrashing around in Joseph Muscat’s cesspit.

Rest assured that Muscat will allow a few months to go by and then he will begin making approaches to Giovanna Debono, especially given that she is to retain her seat in parliament. Eventually Mrs Debono will come to believe that it was the Nationalist Party which was her undoing and which is her enemy, and that Labour is her friend and ally – just as John Dalli and Pullicino Orlando did before her.

The game will be far less interesting and useful to Muscat, though, because he is now in government.
