Malta’s ambassador to China, Clifford Borg Marks, has tendered his resignation and will be leaving his post at the end of this month.

Borg Marks, like Malta’s High Commissioner in Australia, Carmel Muscat, gives new meaning to the term ‘resident ambassador’.

They have lived in China and Australia, respectively, since the 1970s and their permanent home and family are in those countries.

This is the chief reason why their appointments were questionable at the outset, though there are others – particularly in the case of Muscat, the owner of a men’s outfitters in Canberra.

The reasons for Borg Marks’s resignation after just two years are unclear, but might be linked to the huge controversy surrounding the Health & Energy Minister’s estranged wife and the mysterious role she may yet play in Shanghai.

We are now all agog to see who will replace Borg Marks as Malta’s ambassador in Beijing.
