Vincenzo Locorotondo, a wanted Italian Mafioso who was arrested by the Italian police as he came off the catamaran from Malta to Sicily today, is an associate of Sicilian Francesco Airo and of disgraced former police inspectors Daniel Zammit and Roderick Zammit. Airo, who lives in Swieqi, owns the red Ferrari which Daniel Zammit is often seen driving.

Locorotondo, 34, has been hunted by the police in Italy for the last three weeks, as part of the latest anti-Mafia crackdown on the island which has so far led to the arrest of 40 people for associating with the Mafia, use of weapons, attempted murder, hold-ups and extortion.

Airo and the Zammit brothers are in business together and formed their business relationship when the Zammits were still police inspectors. Their business office, which including an internet gaming company, is in Swieqi.

The association between Locorotondo, Francesco Airo, Daniel Zammit and Roderick Zammit became known today after Locorotondo’s photograph was published in the news media. I was contacted by people from Swieqi who informed me that they immediately recognised Locorotondo as the individual who they often saw in the company of Francesco Airo and Daniel Zammit, in and around their office.

Daniel Zammit and Roderick Zammit were detailed to the police force’s Economic Crimes Unit and Anti-Money-laundering Unit shortly after Manuel Mallia was made Police Minister in March 2013. In July last year, their father Ray Zammit was appointed acting Commissioner of Police, but he was replaced following Manuel Mallia’s removal from the cabinet.

Daniel and Roderick Zammit set up a company called Tyche Consultancy Ltd with Francesco Airo last May, with each of them holding 33.3%. Airo is also company secretary for the Malta-registered New Network Ltd, which is owned by a Sicilian called Giuseppe Marotta, and which is licensed by the Malta Gaming Authority.
