Front door on which graffiti was sprayed is Minister’s girlfriend’s and not Minister’s

Family Minister Michael Farrugia made a lot of fuss on his Facebook page about how “his house” was “vandalised”. The accompanying photograph showed the letters CAMY sprayed on a front door that was clearly not his because it is not listed in his declaration of assets to parliament.

I have since discovered that the ground floor maisonette in question, which is in Birbal Street, Balzan, a couple of doors further along from Zmerc bar, is owned by the Minister’s girlfriend, Amanda Mifsud, and has been her home since the days when she was seeing, for some years, Francesco Fumia of Fumia Restaurant. Her parents had bought it for her. At the time she was working at a bank then based at the Plaza Centre in Sliema.

When the Labour Party won the general election in 2013, the Family Minister’s girlfriend was put on the state payroll at Malta Freeport and later given a very senior appointment at the newly created Identity Malta, where she is a director.

The Minister, who has had no home of his own since he left his wife several years ago, and who has lived in borrowed accommodation ever since, is now lodging with Miss Mifsud.

Around 45 minutes ago, as I was taking these photographs, the Family Minister’s chauffeur drew up in his official car wearing GM plates, and pulled into a parking space right outside the door, that had been kept clear. He then sat in the car and waited for around 15 minutes – at which point I left – presumably to take the Minister and his girlfriend to lunch before the big May Day ‘workers’ meeting this afternoon.

As I drove around the block and then parked directly opposite to take more pictures, I saw the chauffeur ringing somebody, so as I drove off, I pulled up alongside him, put down the window, waved and said: “I thought you might want a better look.” Can’t have him thinking I’m part of some giant conspiracy to spray strange letters on the Minister’s girlfriend’s maisonette door.

The location of the maisonette, right next to Zmerc bar, also strongly suggests that some young people were just having a boozy laugh.

The graffito CAMY is gone now except for the Y, which means that whatever paint was used, it was easily removed without having to sand down the door.
