President Aliyev of Azerbaijan has held a referendum to prolong his term of office. This has been criticised widely by EU democracy watchdogs and advisers to the Council of Europe.

But the press in Baku has revealed that Anglu Farrugia, Speaker of the House in Malta, was there as an observer, and that he praised the process and gave it his approval.

The article says: The Speaker of the House of Representatives of Malta Angelo Farrugia confirmed that the referendum met all the requirements of the Azerbaijani legislation. “All proposals for amendments to the Constitution were sent to the public before the referendum by 29 postal services. We welcome the holding of polls among voters. The voting process passed without incidents and in compliance with all procedural requirements, in accordance with international standards,” the observer said.
