Emergency contraception committee: all Nationalist MPs voted in favour, while some Labour MPs voted against

Some of those involved in the ’emergency contraception’ campaign with the Labour Party’s Nikita Zammit Alamango are sharing this newspaper article – presumably without having read or understood it, and calling the Nationalist Party “fossils”.

This speaks volumes about their real intentions and even about their ability (willingness?) to understand the facts. When the parliamentary committee charged with reporting on whether emergency contraception should be made available in Malta, all Nationalist MPs sitting on that committee voted in favour and some Labour MPs voted against.

But Nikita Zammit Alamango’s tools are calling the Nationalist Party fossils, when it is Labour MPs who actively voted for a continuation of an absolute ban on emergency contraception. Forget over the counter or by prescription – those Labour MPs don’t want it at all. I didn’t see Nikita Zammit Alamango’s fellow campaigners calling the government or the Labour Party “fossils”, either, when it is the government/Labour Party whip – yes, of all people – who literally struck out against emergency contraception.

Do they even know who the Labour/government whip is, or what the whip’s function is in parliament? One of the reasons Muscat and his functionaries, like Nikita Zammit Alamango, have found it so easy to manipulate special-interest groups and people in general is because there is such rampant ignorance, and because people, even when they are directly involved in an issue, don’t bother reading the newspapers and ‘inform’ themselves via other people’s Facebook posts.

Yes, the Labour/government whip is fervently AGAINST emergency contraception and yes, several of the Labour MPs on the parliamentary committee about emergency contraception voted AGAINST it, but all Nationalist MPs voted in favour.

There’s no doubt who the real fossils are, just as there’s no doubt why this campaign was started in the first place. I hate to see people being taken advantage of by politicians because they don’t keep themselves apprised of the facts.

It is his MPs who voted against the morning-after pill in committee, and it is his party whip who has been most vocal against the morning-after pill. And Muscat himself has been completely silent about his opinion (if he has one), but I'll bet that in the sandstorm of confusion you didn't even notice that.
