No going back: Theresa May to trigger Article 50 tomorrow

It’s a time of mourning for millions, and even the celebrations seem strained. There was another big anti-Brexit demonstration in London on Sunday but at this stage, the only purpose that serves is to show anger, because the collision course has begun.

Theresa May has said that “no deal (with the European Union) is better than a bad deal” and says Britain is “beginning a bold new chapter as a prosperous, open and global nation”. The four nations of the United Kingdom, she said, “will be an unstoppable force”.

But the EU’s chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, warned last week that the failure to reach a deal is “a distinct possibility”, and that it would have major repercussions for the UK. Problems stem from the fact that Britain and the European Commission have to agree on what Britain owes the EU if the talks are to proceed smoothly.
