Malta’s head of state has formally received at the Palace a man who was indicted on drug-trafficking charges while working as a school minibus driver.

The proceedings against Antoine Azzopardi, known as Cavett, are ongoing, though they appear to have fallen down a black hole along with the trial of Marco Gaffarena’s brother-in-law for the murder of his wife’s (Gaffarena’s sister) lover in Qormi more than eight years ago.

Antoine Azzopardi aka Cavett runs an illegal restaurant and dance venue on government land at Tal-Handaq, which Marco Gaffarena, who squatted on it years ago, says he lets him use free of charge. The land is part of the corrupt deal which Gaffarena struck with the government in the ‘Old Mint Street’ scandal.
