George Pullicino eliminated/Karol Aquilina beats him to it
The casual election for Robert Arrigo’s Nationalist Party seat vacated on the 10th District: Graziella Attard Previ has been knocked out of the race, with a tight battle ensuing between former cabinet minister George Pullicino and current Siggiewi mayor Karol Aquilina. Dr Aquilina has won the seat and joins parliament for the first time.
Mr Pullicino should now try to understand that this was inevitable, that his many years in parliament should have been enough and that he should have known to close this chapter himself rather than asking the electorate to close it for him but hoping they wouldn’t.
And Dr Aquilina, now that he is the member for Sliema and St Julian’s should, despite the heavily changed demographics of those towns, ease up on his refusal to speak English – because in that neck of the woods, you’re expected to speak both as the situation requires.
So two of the three Nationalist MPs for Sliema are now Karol Aquilina of Siggiewi and Marlene Farrugia of Zurrieq. This is fascinating. There is one ‘native’, though: Karl Gouder, who was elected on 3rd June. Had Robert Arrigo not been made to vacate this seat, there would have been two ‘natives’ and one ‘non-native’.
