Muscat supporters swarm in to PANA Committee chairman’s Facebook page to insult him

Egged on to do so by cries of “Traitors!” and “Defend our country!” from senior Labour political figures and at least one former union boss, supporters of Joseph Muscat and his party are swarming in to Werner Langen’s official Facebook page to post highly offensive insults and threats.

Dr Langen, who is German, is one of the most powerful members of the European Parliament, and is closely linked to Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor. He chairs the European Parliament’s anti-money-laundering/Panama Papers committee and has made no secret of the fact that he is scandalised by the behaviour of the Maltese prime minister, his chief of staff, and cabinet minister Konrad Mizzi.

Following yesterday’s debate in the European Parliament’s plenary session, about the rule of law in Malta, in which Dr Langen spoke with anger about that behaviour, a campaign against him was triggered among supporters of the Labour Party, who began posting offensive comments on social media, even though most clearly had no idea who Dr Langen is or what his role is in this scenario.
