Just when you thought you’d seen it all: more dispatches from the Other Malta, this time involving pasta

Published: March 27, 2014 at 9:28pm

This was some kind of modelling brief – to get creative with pasta. Yes, I know – WHY PASTA?

And why are young gay men in Malta so very fey? These men are gay, right? Because if they aren’t, something is going very wrong and it’s time for the girls to emigrate in large numbers – possibly on government-sponsored chartered craft, like in the 1950s.

  1. La Redoute says:

    They’re Mr Malta 2014 contestants.

  2. Dissident says:

    O-M-G

  3. You'd have to be desperate says:

These must be the exhibits from the Adventurer, Athlete and Family Man pavilions at the Malta Men Expo.

    They have such strong arms.

  4. Harry Purdie says:

Jeez, I must be getting past it. What a sad, weird, worthless bunch. Is there a purpose here? Beyond me.

  5. Another John says:

My 12 year old just came up with a description for these men: ‘trans-homo’.

I asked him what that means, and he said ‘straight men pretending to be gay’.

    • sasori says:

1= neither you or your son have the right to say anything about anyone, let them do what they want.
2= you don’t pretend to be gay if you are one and some of them actually are.
3=the guys in the picture are just having fun, are they not allowed to do so in a democratic ,suppose to be open country!!
and 4 =you must teach your son/daughter the meaning of the words he/she used, because clearly doesn’t have any idea what they mean.

      • La Redoute says:

The men in the photos are free to appear ridiculous and we are free to laugh at them.

      • Another John says:

Sasori, we do not have a ‘right’ to say anything? Why not?

Nobody is stopping them from making fools of themselves. I also am of the impression that we are living in a democracy.

Why are you trying to shut us up? One man’s food could be another man’s poison. If the above pictures are to your liking, it is up to you, but certainly nobody can stop me from saying what I think, including ridiculing the models.

    • The Phoenix says:

Your son is very perspicacious at 12. It seems to be the fashion for Maltese men of that age and background to go for the ‘gay look’ whether they are gay or not.

Where are the barely seen but felt rippling muscles and hairy chests of yesterday? These models look so manufactured, so sort of pre-pubescent. Why don’t they just get a life?

      • Another John says:

Yes. And he has a habit of going straight to the point, without beating about the bush. In fact he still enjoys the liberties that adults don’t, when we, the adults, are at times constrained by political correctness.

  6. off towards space says:

    fertile ground for NAMBLA men

  7. il-Ginger says:

    Ooo so creative

  8. Grezz says:

The scary thing is that – assuming these men have got a clean criminal record, they could end up as teachers working with minors … you know, because they have a clean police record and are – ahem – “artistic”.

    • anon says:

What a stupid comment! Have you seen Erin Tanti’s photo? He looked so deceivingly gentle and quiet and yet everyone knows how the story ended.

So how can you tell from these photos if they are pedos just because they look gay.

      • anonymous666 says:

Agreed such bigotry is disgusting. And not all of them look gay.. besides it is not your place to decide what either of them might be.

  9. Dez says:

    What were they thinking?

  10. Joe Fenech says:

    http://daphnecaruanagalizia.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/pasta-6.jpg

Is this Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando’s illegitimate child?

    • anon says:

No. He’s a very admirable young man who despite having a hearing impairment works very hard to achieve whatever he aims for. What an insult to imply he has anything to do with that scum JPO.

      • anon says:

Has anyone of these guys fucked your father in the ass? Untill then no one can call them gay!!! What hurts the most is that this kind of modelling is a way to work on self confidence, and useless people keep judging someone who is fragile….try putting yourself in the game before tagging others!!!!

[Daphne – Mamma mia. I would normally put some asterisks right there, but I think I had better let you be seen for what you are.]

      • Jozef says:

I’d love to, it’s the waxing bit that holds me back.

    • mauro says:

please some respect… that person have disability and we as a company gave him the opportunity to feel worth it and to feel that he is like others….

kolla pezza wahda intom safrattant hadd minkom ma juri ismu ax kolla tibzaw….

[Daphne – Exactly how are people supposed to know that he’s deaf? And it is offensive in the extreme to say that you “gave him the opportunity to feel worth it and to feel that he is like others”. What others – men who pose with bits of pasta for the camera in a pointless photo-shoot for a non-modelling career? Men who think that this is how men behave? Men who wear make-up and wax their chests? He probably WAS like others before you got to work on him persuading him that this kind of thing is normal. I’m afraid to say that it’s men who wear make-up and pose with pasta in an exercise of narcissism who are the oddities. Not that narcissistic men are at all unusual in this benighted island, but men who strike camp poses with bits of short pasta most certainly are. And how patronisingly rude – ‘make him feel wertit’. Unbelievable. I suppose you think that being deaf means people can’t read.]

      • Timon of Athens says:

Gay, deaf or whatever, the poor guy is making a fool of himself.

There are many other ways he can go about building his self esteem, or whatever it is he’s aiming for.

    • Chris Ripard says:

No, Joe, he isn’t. I’ve known the boy for almost 20 years now. He is profoundly deaf but despite that, and with very little real help for most of his school life, where he never heard a single word mind you, he managed to get a Higher National Diploma.

You may think you’re funny, but I think you should be a man and apologise to him. Your only mitigating factor is that deafness is an invisible handicap.

      • anon says:

I know you know Daphne but just to make it clear that Anon in the comment below mine is not me and I am annoyed that whoever used my nickname then wrote in a vulgar way to make their point. Thanks

    • Joe Fenech says:

Daphne has already answered to some of the silly comments. Had I known that this person was deaf, I would still have made the same comment, because a crass, stupid photo shoot will open doors for no one. It will close them.

I don’t know what planet some people live on to think that having an impairment of whatever nature other than subnormal intelligence (in which case people are not responsible for their choices and actions) spares one from criticism. Criticising the actions of someone with an impairment is not the same thing as criticising him or her for that impairment.

Andrea Bocelli is blind. That doesn’t stop certain critics from decimating him.

  11. Joe Fenech says:

Eh hija il-Malti, poplu m’hawnx bhalu: bil-ghaqal, habriek, krejattiv u raffinat.

  12. Anthony says:

    This is all rather disturbing.

Would the health minister, after sorting out the great big almighty mess he has been, nolens volens, landed in, consider a national programme to make Nebido shots available for free, every three months, to all those who think they might need them?

  13. Paddling Duck says:

Someting IS wrong if they are gay too. Most gay men want a man and not some pastasexual camp queen.

  14. Painter says:

I agree that art is subjective and all but this is just ridiculous.

  15. M. Cassar says:

OK, no pasta on the menu for the next few days.

  16. g,gatt says:

ok so firstly mrs daphnecaruanagalizia….who do you think to are to say such things? to me you showed me you do not know art if it bitch slapped you in the face.

To all the people commented please appreciate the beauty in are …and i know for a fact most of those guys are straight to the bones .

  17. Joe Fenech says:

I used to hate it when over 40 years ago my children (aged 4) did this kind of stuff at school.

  18. nadine says:

You missed the female version – and the director of both shoots is a biology teacher.

The even sadder thing is that they will never give up and admit that they are making total fools out of themselves..and come next May they will ‘compete’ in another pointless ‘competition’.

If I had a son/daughter (with reference to your other post) who was into such things, I would most definitely send him/her to a psychiatrist.

  20. Claudio says:

No Daphne , they’re not gay (if that is gay for you there isn’t much hope) ..and what if they were?
And what is so not likeable about the photos? … You seem to have too much time in your hands, no wonder our country never moves forward …wow it’s like we’ve never seen anything before -.- *first time on your site, commenting also*

    • Yanika says:

Hi Jane, id like to know whats wrong with that photoshoot?? clearly you have no sense of fashion… you maltese people will do anything to critisis cuz if you would see these photos on magezines everyone would find them artistic but no because they are maltese you critisis…this is a photoshoot organized by a very talented designer who designed and sewed by hand those outfits so how could you not appreciate the photos. secondely if you have something against gays thats your problem its not like theyre naked they have clothes on !!!. there is nothing wrong with these photos. just differant then any same photos they take in malta. so let me know whats so wrong about these photos :) Thanks

      • Mike says:

First of all I would like to dedicate a minute’s silence for the demise of the English language.

Now that that is done – no sense of fashion? Those pictures are the very essence of tacky. They’re ghastly – starting with the excessive make-up, continuing to the ‘what on earth is that’ background, and finishing with the over-the-top lighting effects.

Who cares if people have invested lots of time and effort into this? If it’s bad, expect criticism.

These are things you are expected to deal with as an adult. If you can’t deal with criticism then don’t publish material for consumption by the general public.

And why do you, the lot of you, have this idea that the people criticising this would find them lovely if they were foreign? I (and I assure you, so do most of the people here) find lots of things that happen ‘abroad’ to be tacky and have no issue in criticising them either.

America/Britain’s Next Top Model is a prime example of that.

[Daphne – What you have written there constitutes a threat and is reportable. There really is no call for this kind of aggression. It doesn’t prove your masculinity with people who are laughing at you for a camp pose with pasta. Just laugh it off – you have to admit that these pictures are ridiculous. At least play it with a sense of humour.]

    • La Redoute says:

      Hairdressers can be so touchy.

    • Direct says:

Hi Kitch, you’re such a macho…..ahhhh..what a handachi ! …..you will always be my spaghetti Rambo. xxxxxxxxxxx

    • disgusred says:

Daphne….I cant wait until the day you no longer exist..there are going to be a lot of parties. Im ashamed I come from the same human race like you. Have you looked at yourself ? Have you taken a no make up selfie ?

For those INSARA commenting about the men in the photos. So what if they are gay…..its NONE of your business. It is very creative what they have done AND I AM SURE that none of you would have been able to come out with such an idea.

[Daphne – No, I haven’t taken a no make-up selfie. I don’t wear make-up and never have, so there would be no point in that. There’s a no make-up picture on the right-hand side of this page if you’re interested. And kindly bear in mind that I’m not supposed to look like somebody your age because I’m old enough to be your mother, though in that case you wouldn’t have been posing for pasta shots in a metrosexual competition, I can assure you.]

    • disgusred says:

Ehe daphne ? Its a threat ? Mela inti tista tghid li trid u haddiehor le. Ghandek livell ta hdura fuqek….ja bhima. These photos are just as ridiculous as a normal photo of you. Issa filkas cempel lil tat TV waqt li tilghaba tal miskina ja li*a tax xjaten.

[Daphne – I suppose it was necessary for you to confirm what couldn’t be more obvious from these pictures: that only the socio-educationally deprived go in for this sort of thing. Jersey Shore and all that – must be in the genes. After all, the immediate ancestors of those who live there come from this part of the Mediterranean, and the ‘lifestyle’, sartorial choices, hairstyles, make-up and general attitude are identical. It really must be in the blood and only partly to do with social conditioning. These pictures are not the stuff of Vogue, as you seem to imagine, but the stuff of Jerseylicious.]

  22. FJ says:

I will never stop saying this fact: you are just a rude and an impulsive woman who judges art/modelling without knowing the reasons behind all this. These young men all worked hard for their shoots and yet you judge their artistic methods by calling them gay.

This shows that you don’t have a clue of what art/creativity is. Go and search for foreign shoots, and vogue models etc. I bet they’re also gay then in your opinion! But then again, I wouldn’t give a damn of what you’re saying, cause they get paid for their job, yet you blab and make a fool of yourself about modelling/art.

Live and let live. Who are you to judge people in this way? They were given a subject to work on and they did a marvellous job. I was part in this competition and am very proud of it’s outcome.

Well done, keep on humiliating yourself.

    • anonymous666 says:

well said dear :) fabulous job.

    • La Redoute says:

Oh, please. If you publish photos of yourself looking ridiculous, expect to be laughed at. It goes with the territory.

A fine model you make, throwing a hissy fit because someone laughed at your photo.

How on earth are you going to cope with the rejection that makes up 99% of a model’s life?

      • Fucking hilarious says:

        La Redoute :

Don’t try to boost your ego by deluding yourself. You were born ugly and you’ll die one too….tough luck :)

      • La Redoute says:

You must be even younger than I thought you were. Rejection is par for the course in a model’s life. If you were planning to dive into that shark pool, I suggest you try your luck elsewhere. You’re not cut out to cope with the inevitable disappointment.

    • dave says:

Art? Vogue?? I think you have never opened one…send these to Anna Wintour and let us know:P

These kind of photos are one of the reasons why our fashion industry sometimes looks cheap

    • Timon of Athens says:

Yes, very stylish photo shoots. Blown out of proportion to the limit.

Lime green spaghetti? Blood spattering? Very artistic indeed.

Seems more to me like some wild party where everyone got drunk and came out of their closets.

    • N.Ice says:

I think Daphne knows exactly what art is. Criticism is an art of its own after all… and as for creativity, I think that a critic who can amuse us with something new everyday is anything but uncreative. ;)

  23. Peppa Pig says:

    Jeez.

  25. H.P. Baxxter says:

  26. Firat and Last says:

Just to let you know, art is creativity, without art and creativiyy none would exist

  27. Pixie dust says:

Ms. Daphne, I would really like to see some nice photo of yours in next time, just add some Easter figolla under your chin so I will be able to say…”Oh my what happened to todays women journalists?….have they beome Lesbian?” Utterly dissgusting not to mention how ignorant some people are…..

  28. chunky says:

Dear Daphne, as a gay man myself, I find it extremely insulting that you, or anyone else really, assumes that these men are gay.

Also, as a gay man who is very much involved on the gay scene, I can safely say that all those faces are very new to me.

My assumption, in as much as I hate to do so, is that those guys are the definition of the Maltese metrosexual, straight men who are in touch with their feminine side and clearly not afraid to show it.

However, the only thing these guys are in touch with is an overdose of carby-pasta. Mark my words: most of them used Barilla… Oh, the irony!

They tend to use the phrases “faqa” and “bis-serjeta?” a lot and cover themselves in D&G perfume, because it is the only designer thing they can afford. Ouch.

  29. Raisa says:

If you think Kim Kardashian is a standard to aspire to, it’s no wonder you think this is art.

      • Raisa says:

It doesnt matter shes prettier than dcg any ways

      • Raisa says:

La redoute stop fucking try to agree with the bitch Daphne Caruana Galizia and if you agree with her your not more than a fuckin bitch asshole…….

      • La Redoute says:

Being Kim Kardashian is not a worthwhile ambition. There’s is only one of her (thank heavens, I should add).

It might not seem like that to you now, but everyone’s skin wrinkles and sags with age and, when that happens, there’s usually a lot of life left in you so you’d better have something other than a large bottom and heavy make-up to aspire to.

    • Jozef says:

‘Go and arrange your life’; mur irranga hajtek.

  34. goldfinc says:

No wonder you look for these photos ..everytime this type of competition happens we realize your blog exist. So deep down you must be happy that they happen wow. Yes once you say you are a journalist you think you can insult and abuse your power but here you are going too personal and insulting comments dont make you any more intelegent or superior. If this is the level of journalism you are looking for .. well you and your followers really should make sure you should use your so called education of higher level in a better way.

  35. JackMacQuack says:

Daphne, I really have to congratulate you on your creativity on coming up with all these insults on a daily basis, I´m positive you don´t really feel this way about most things and this is just a little fun you have winding everyone up. It´s a prefectly legitimate hobby and is quite entertaining to read the comments of angry readers to your made up vitriol.

    On the offchance that:
    a) these insults you post are meant for anything more than fun,
    b) you consider this blog as anything more than a hobby or
    c) you actually do think this is what gay people get up to in their free time, or that being gay would excuse this crap then I´m afraid you really you really should try some yoga and meditation because it definately cannot be healthy to have so much negativity.

[Daphne – Actually no, I don’t think it’s what gay people get up to in their free time. If you must insist on lumping all gay people together, that’s your problem and not mine. I would never make that mistake. There are as many forms of sexuality (and stupidity) among those who are homosexual as there are among those who are heterosexual. This is but one. Those men are most definitely not heterosexual, even if they still believe they are. But I would no more judge all gay men by their strange behaviour than I would judge all heterosexual people by the fact that some of them are into dressing up as Spiderman and jumping off a tall cupboard onto the bed before they can work up any interest in what actually happens on it.]

  36. H.P. Baxxter says:

I suppose the organisers of this ridiculous dressing-up photoshoot, and countless others, think this sort of thing gives “confidence” to teenagers and young men and women.

Idiots. They’re just destroying reputations, skewing minds, and making a lot of money off it.

So you want to give confidence to people who risk feeling insecure? How about this:
    http://www.efru.org/wp-content/gallery/interview-fabio-spiteri/482119_10151123774144188_1688079559_n.jpg

  37. Maxine says:

I think that the problem in Malta is that people who own these companies are just ‘dilettanti’. They do not have real knowledge about fashion. Unless you travel the world and meet other fashion designers and study about it you are not going to be up to that standard. Teenagers take part in fruitless competitions, a lot of them which do not even make sense e.g. ‘Mr.Wetlook, Mr.Carnival King of blah blah’, inventing multiple competitions so these teenagers could win a frickin crown or sash and then what happens? NOTHING. They do not have the opportunity to sponsor sometimes and these teens have to pay for all the clothes and travelling and end up not attending school for that period which is stupid.

    • H.P. Baxxter says:

The organisers make A LOT of money. They can lie all they want about their noble humanitarian mission of giving confidence to insecure men and women but they’re really only in it for the money.

    • Pervsss says:

They are not ‘dilettanti’! They are perverts.

  38. Brian says:

    What losers they look.

  39. DannyBoy says:

Daphne, thank you thank you THANK YOU! Please can you install a like button on your blog – Not to say I always agree with you, but I love 99.9% of what you write… this is just brilliant and keep up the good work.

Back on subject, this photo shoot begs the question, “Is it for real?” Surely there is some hidden irony subtly placed within the depths of this pasta frolic?

Someone please enlighten me, because it’s just far too highbrow for my simple mind and joe-average tastes.

I’m off to pick up some smooth-skinned chaps, bottle of Johnson’s and a pack of De Cecco to parody this pastastrophe.

Listen Daphne, you are starting to get on my nerves. You don’t know what you are talking about, pretend you do, spin up good sounding paragraphs, and insult people. Sure this looks odd, but have you seen PROFESSIONAL fashion shows abroad? They dress up in such weird things you’d thing no one was mad enough to do that. And also, the best way to not be put under pressure by photos or an audience is to be used to even more pressure, as you would subconsciously think “this is nothing compared to training”. Even if this is not training (which it probably isn’t), don’t be such a homophobe. The world doesn’t revolve around you, you are just one of the many humans, so don’t try to pretend you’re something better when, clearly, you are someone who get’s a kick out of annoying others and getting attention. My cat is a better person than you.

[Daphne – Readers might be fascinated to know that this man has given his email address as ‘[email protected]’. I reveal it only because it is clearly a false one. I hope.]

    • N.Ice says:

Yep, they wear crazy stuff in the PROFESSIONAL shows abroad. Unfortunately, we don’t have “Fashion Police” for those who do wierd things here, so DCG has boldly stepped-up for the job :P

  52. Victor says:

I sincerely hope that Maltese youths are not all like the ones commenting here. Aggressive, ignorant and rude. They cannot criticise, or put a point forward, without insulting, their knowledge of the English language is horrendous and their loose use of foul language is even worst.

Moreover, the fact that they actually think that these ‘creations’ as they call them, can be remotely compared to the ones found on Vogue and Designer fashion shows, depicts their level of professionalism (or stupidity?). No wonder we have never reached and will never reach high standards here in Malta.

  53. Peter says:

First I’d like to assure you that any possible mass-emigration which might take place will be made by guys and not girls. That is provided that only girls like you are left running their mouths on this little island (..and I am sure this will not be the case!)

The second point I’d like to make is that some people seek to get attention from putting pasta and make-up on their head whilst others might try putting up blogs on the internet, why should anyone stop either?

Finally I want to assure you that some of the guys there are straight and DO have girlfriends. It is perfectly fine to use controversial lines in a blog to get some attention you so dearly crave, but to insinuate or spread lies definitely crosses the line.

  54. to daphne says:

why you people want to say these things, why being such cruel insead of loving each other and help each other, we call names? you really need a lesson, once i heard that a man ran after you and you had to escape from him, you really need to see a doctor and get help, because remember this! MIN IMAQDAR IRRID JIXTRI! please get this posted i’d really apprieciate it :)

[Daphne – Yes, that man was the mayor of Zurrieq, Natius Farrugia http://daphnecaruanagalizia.com/2014/03/the-mayor-of-zurrieq-publishes-photographs-of-maltas-first-transgender-wedding/
He was fined around Eur2,500 for ‘running after me’.]
