    Daphne, perhaps one day someone will write how Labour’s foreign policy has always been disastrous for Malta. This China thing is history repeating itself all over.

    We don’t need to go back decades to remember what Europe stood for Labour. Ahh, Alfred Sant’s golden years.

    Before Sant, we had Karmenu’s fixation about neutrality only to side with Gaddafi when it came to US interventions. North Korea, China. No need to say more.

    Before that we had Mintoff’s failed negotiations with the British. Mintoff tried to hide his failure and turned to Gaddafi for help. Ahh, Mintoff’s glorious era.

    Even before that, we had Mintoff’s idea for integration with the British. Again, failed negotiations. We have to thank our dear Lord that Hitler had long gone before this farse. I’m pretty sure he would have turned to him had he still been alive. Just imagine how history (possibly world history) would have been re-written had Mintoff been in power before World War II.

    It does seem the Chinese tend to get their feasibility studies wrong, landing central government in a rut, this must be the first time ever a dictatorship lost control of its own officials, each and every ‘province’ bent on a building frenzy.

    Latest figures estimate over 64 million empty apartments, people nowhere near affording these. Gargantuan shopping centres, grandiose boulevards, each ghost city visible from space.

    They’ve discovered SWAPS and derivatives to make up for the lack of cash now. Hoping it won’t pop. If anything, it will be some scapegoat’s head with a bullet. Corruption, they’ll say on CCTV, yeah right.

    How’s that for bridges to nowhere?

    When asked about China Communication Construction Company’s blacklisting, Muscat said due diligence relates not to the company but to its ultimate owner, i.e. China.

    China is one of the most corrupt among the world’s major economies.

    Unsurprisingly, Reporters Without Borders ranks China at 174 (out of 179 countries) on its press freedom index.
