Strada Zekka is Old Mint Street. Iz-Zekka is the Maltese for ‘the Mint’, where money was coined.
It’s called ‘Old Mint’ Street in English rather than ‘Mint’ Street because the Mint was no longer there when the English name came into common usage.
Same as with Old Bakery Street/Strada Forni.
I don’t know why I’m explaining this – an irrelevant anorak moment to pre-empt the sort of irritation we had with the inability to distinguish between Ordnance and Ordinance in the Great Suq Debate. The name of the street is the former.
