Joe Debono Grech and Azerbaijan

In 2010, Labour MP Joe Debono Grech was elected rapporteur of the Council of Europe on Azerbaijan in dubious circumstances.

He then went on to defend Azerbaijan in the Council of Europe in the face of much international criticism about its abysmal track record in human rights and electoral fraud.

    How can one who says “Il-Bieb Tieghi Miftuh Ghal Laburisti Biss” be expected to judge anyone’s respect for human rights?

    His wars with Carmen Sant and antics at the football club leave one under no illusions of how he conducts business.

    Does he know better? I know that he is able to do by far worse than that and his public positions are vivid supporting evidence.

    One should not forget the endorsement by Anglu Farrugia of Azerbaijan’s elections as free and fair when he was an OSCE monitor. Who knows whether Shav Nair didn’t have a hand in these going-ons prior to the 2013 elections ?
