Overdose

Published: November 10, 2008 at 8:59pm

They’ve interrupted the news to bring us Joseph Muscat live, addressing the nation again. What is this? Overdose on Joseph night? Monday night stacks? First we had his reply to the budget. Immediately that ended, we had a synopsis of his speech on the news, complete with background shots of what we had just seen. Now that has been interrupted for his address to the nation, and once this finishes, he’s going to be on Bondi+ for the rest of the evening. Thank god for Paramount Comedy.

Is it a must to yelp in parliament?

    “Thank god for Paramount Comedy.”

or a re-run of “Bewitched” on Living TV.

  3. Tonio Farrugia says:

This is supposed to be a press conference. Could somebody tell him that this does not mean paraphrasing his long bloody pre-prepared speech. But he should give the press (what press?) the chance to grill him?

[Daphne – His aim was to use up all the allotted time so that no time would be left for questions, except a friendly one. That’s what actually happened. He may have handled it differently to Alfred ‘no questions please’ Sant, but the aim and the result were the same. He’s Sarah Palin, scared of questions lest he’s unable to answer them.]

  4. I. M. Dingli says:

True Daphne, but at least now he is not reading his speech completely.

  5. Matthew says:

Joseph Muscat sings ‘If You Don’t Know Me By Now’. Recorded at his loft in Brusil.

  6. silla says:

What a monotone; how boring – now all the MPs are really falling asleep.
I know his facade is not much to go by, but can you imagine having to sit through the press conference hearing him and looking at his behind, Although sometimes I get the impression that’s where his words come out from anyway.

Qabel Spiky JM qal li ghandu kuragg / jemmen fil-poplu or something to that effect, and now he said il-budgets ta’ Lawrence Gonzi kienu biex jirbah l-elezzjoni.
Daqshekk ghandu fiducja fil-poplu Spiky JM.

FInally hearing Gonzi’s soothing voice, what a relief.

  8. Ivan Galea says:

Yes even I am dissapointed with JM’s speech….he should emerge more strongly against YOUR DEAR MINORITY government…like in all EU countries we should have a strong vocal opposition which does not hesitate to tear the current party in power to shreds…mela tmur tohroglu l id tal hbiberija lil Gonzi….

  9. Corinne Vella says:

Ivan Galea: If this is a minority government, what will President Obama’s be?

  10. Arnold Galea says:

    Dear Corinne & Ivan,

The Obama will be an absolute majority government and not a minority one.

On the other hand the PN have obtained a relative majority of roughly 49%.

  11. Corinne Vella says:

Arnold Galea: Thank you.Now please explain the referendum result.

  12. Arnold Galea says:

    Hi Corinne

The Yes vote won with about 53%. This was further confirmed in the general election.

Why did you ask about the referendum result? Are you after some further information by any chance?

If that is the case, I have no problems feel free to ask & I will simply reply.

Make sure you don’t miss tonight’s South Park (at 10pm, I think). It’s about Obama’s election. Should be interesting.

[Daphne – Oh no! I missed that. And I’d been wondering when it would be shown, because I was told about it. Instead, I had the television tuned to Bondiplus with that wet-wipe giving his spiel for the umpteenth time that evening, and everyone left the room because I refused to turn it off.]

  14. Kenneth Cassar says:

@ Daphne: You didn’t miss it. It’s on today (Tuesday).

[Daphne – Thanks. Still dizzy this morning.]

  15. Kenneth Cassar says:

Of course, I should have written “You haven’t missed it”, not “you didn’t miss it”. Guess I was still dizzy too ;)

This episode should be hilarious. The image of Stan’s dad jumping about in front of the TV (in an Obama T-Shirt) shouting “CHANGE…CHANGE…WE F(beep)KING DID IT” has stuck in my mind.

  16. Sel says:

Actually yesterday evening on Paramount Comedy there was a new episode of Two and a Half Men. Definitely better than what was showing on TVM or ONE :) :)

  21. Ray Borg says:

    @ Corinne Vella
You asked for an explanation of the referndum result. Here is my contribution and it is free
The objective of the Referenda Act (Cap.237) is for registered voters to decide either whether they approve a proposal or proposals set out in a resolution passed by the House of Representatives or whether they agree that a provision of law should be abrogated.
On the 8th of March, 2003, the electorate was asked to decide by means of a referendum on the proposal that Malta becomes a member of the EU on its enlargement due on 1st May, 2004
The Question put was: “Do you agree that Malta becomes a member of the European Union in the enlargement that will take place on 1 May 2004?

The registered voters had the option to vote in favour, vote against, abstain or invalidate their vote

The following figures emerge from the 2003 Referendum:

    Registered Voters 297,881

    Votes in Favour 143,094

    Votes Against 123,628
    Invalid Votes 3,928
    Abstentions:
    Registered Voters 297,881
    Less Votes Cast 270,650 = 27,231

    Votes against(123,628)+Invalid+(3,928)+abstentions (27,231)add up to 154,787

Seen in the light of these figures, the claim that “over 52% of the Maltese electorate voted in favour of EU accession” is not correct.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE ACT SPEAKS OF REGISTERED VOTERS.

Since mathematics is not an opinion I leave it up to you to work out the percentage of those who voted in favour.

[Daphne – The results of elections and referendums are not calculated on the total number of registered voters but on the total number of people who voted. I know that Labour Party supporters seem to have trouble understanding how democracy works, but give it a try and you might be pleasantly surprised that it’s quite safe and normal out here.]

  22. Kenneth Cassar says:

    Re Ray Borg’s explanation:

Well, that sure makes those who opposed EU membership stupid. If they had not got that crazy idea to abstain or invalidate their vote, they might have got their way.

Of course, this is all assuming that those who abstained or invalidated their vote were against EU membership. Try proving that!

It’s amazing how there are still people who question such a clear-cut referendum result.

  23. Corinne Vella says:

    Ray Borg:

Mine was a rhetorical question. I see you have missed the point.

  24. Ray Borg says:

    Daphne
Please read again the Referenda Act (Cap 237) and you shall find that it speaks very clearly about registered voters. There is no mention of valid votes cast.

    Kenneth Cassar
The Referenda Act gives the registered voter all the three options. What is sure in that result is the fact that the sum of those in favour is less than the votes against, invalid votes and abstentions.

    Corinne
You asked a question and I gave you a reply.

May I let you all in a little secret? Mine was one of those 143,094 yes votes.

  25. Kenneth Cassar says:

    @ Ray Borg:

I know that the Referenda Act gives the registered voters all three options. How could it not? Are we to expect police dragging people to the polling booths, or checking on people to see whether they have invalidated their votes?

And yes, the sum of those in favour is less than the votes against, invalid votes and abstentions. It is also less than the sum of people yet to be born. But what matters in referenda in the real world is the number of those who voted yes and the number of those who voted no.

But of course, some people will insist that “partnership rebah”. Incredible.

  26. Kenneth Cassar says:

    @ Ray Borg:

“Over 52% of the Maltese electorate voted in favour of EU accession” may be incorrect, but “Over 52% of those who voted favoured EU accession” certainly is.

  27. Ray Borg says:

If, as you admit, “over 52% of the Maltese electorate voted in favour of EU accession may be incorrect, therefore, it would be correct to say that only 48% of the Maltese electorate voted in favour of EU accession. N’est ce pas?

[Daphne – A piece of desperate elastic will only stretch so far, sir. What percentage of US registered voters voted for Obama? And on the strength of that ‘very minority vote’, he is the most powerful man in the world. Get a grip.]

  28. Kenneth Cassar says:

    @ Ray Borg: Yawn.
